Physics Demo Time (or Cool Party Trick ... your choice) - Opening a Can Drink with a Sharpie!

Can you learn something from this demonstration? Probably! But even if you don't, it's a really cool demo that is super easy to do (though a bit of practice is helpful). Try it for yourself and let me know in the comments how it went! A real attention getter!
Note to parents and teachers - very sorry for disturbing the peace. And the mess.
Note to anybody who does the demo - I'm not sorry for disturbing the peace. Nor the mess.

    Wow! This video (made in 2017) suddenly (summer 2021) exploded in views. Thanks KZread algorithm! I have taken a rather long break from making videos simply because of being very busy with other things including some writing. The sudden interest in this video has provided the spark I needed, so stay tuned for new videos in the near future.

    Seeing the demonstration my mind wandered back 54 years to when I was in grade one. In those days canned carbonated drinks used steel cans that had to be opened with a punch-type can opener. (For those who don't know the openers hooked the lip edge of the can and were pivoted so a triangular punch sheared an opening in the top of the can). Our class was having some sort of party and each of us students had a can of what we called "pop". At that age we relied on adults to open the cans for us as it did take some strength to use the can opener with the steel cans. Anyways, the teacher had to move from desk to desk opening one can after another for the 20+ kids in our class. What she didn't know was some kids had shaken their cans! Some reading this may not be totally aware of the implications of that shaking! While a modern soda can might just overflow when opened after shaking, the punch-type can opener is guaranteed to spray spectacularly! When our teacher opened the first can that had been shaken she screamed as she & the student were sprayed. She regained composure and preceded to opening more. When she was sprayed a second time she completely lost her cool and was very mad, was yelling at us etc. As she proceeded to open more cans she would ask us first if the can had been shaken. Eventually she made it to another that had been shaken. When she asked the kid (not me) peed his pants in fear! At that point she refused to open anymore cans and told us we'd have to share. [The fear no doubt had its genesis in the fact that that teacher used to hit us but that's another story. Kids today have it easy!].

    Good demo! It is hard to tell how loud it is from the video. Any decibel estimate? I do notice that you don't have ear protection so it can't be too loud. Also, I am wondering where you got the idea to try this. Very clever.

  • @MisterPhysics

    @MisterPhysics

    7 жыл бұрын

    Thanks! It is hard to tell the loudness from the video - it is louder than most people would have expected. I guess I cannot say "Don't wear ear protection" but in my estimation, the sound is maybe just a bit louder than a typical balloon pop. I have done this demonstration many, many times, and I have never experienced any ear ringing or anything else that would make me worry about it being too loud. As for where I got the idea - it was the craziest thing. I had a sharpie in my right hand and my diet Coke in my left hand when all of a sudden I tripped and fell down. Several years later I then had this demonstration shown to me by another physics teacher. I have no idea how she came upon it.
