While there are numerous PHILOSOPHIES to describe the DEPTH of SANATAN DHARM and its COMPREHENSIVENESS which the priestly class i.e. so called Pandits, who know nothing about it or focus only on ritualistic systems rather than INNER TRANSFORMATION, have distorted it over time resulting in CASTE SYSTEM, SUPERSTITIOUS BELIEFS, etc. hiding its real essence and vasteness. We have always believed that there is no definite way to worshipp the Absolute reality or Pure Conciousness leading to different religious systems, sects, etc 1) Believe in God ! - Aastik - Accepted 2) Don't believe in God ! - You're still accepted as Nastik and can be a very good Hindu just strive to maintain and uphold your Dharma 3) You want to worship idols - please go ahead. Shaivism, Shaktism, Vaishnavism, Smartism etc. the the main sects. You are a murti pujak(idol worship) who mediates on some idol considering it as symbol of God BUT NOT God itself (Isth). In this he/she doesn't worship the stone, idol or symbol etc. but worship the same Supreme Absolute formless reality by just having some image(which may be human like or some animals etc. ) in mind to ease the divine association. As far as different dieties are concerned, hindus don't do "idol worship" and believe in the idea that the Formless Absolute reality or Pure consciousness alone is ultimately real, while the transient phenomenal world is an illusory appearance (maya). We rejects the dualism of Samkhya between purusha (primal consciousness) and prakriti (nature). SO, EXPERIENCING SELF (JIVATMAN) IS IN REALITY NOT DIFFERENT FROM ATMAN-BRAHMAN, THE HIGHEST SELF AND ULTIMATE REALITY, WHICH IS SAT-CIT-ANANDA, SELF-LUMINOUS (SVAYAM-PRAKASA), PURE AWARENESS OR CONSCIOUSNESS. IN THIS VIEW WHEN WE DO IDOL WORSHIP, JIVANATMAN OR INDIVIDUAL SELF IS A MERE REFLECTION OR LIMITATION OF SINGULAR ATMAN IN A MULTITUDE OF APPARENT INDIVIDUAL BODIES. Stone deities in hindu temples are for 2 reasons. a) THEY ARE USED AS OBJECTS OF ATTRACTION (SO BATHED, GIVEN FOOD, DRESSED UP) FOR FOCUS AND MEDITATION IN THE PRESENCE OF SANSKRIT MANTRA VIBRATIONS, AUGMENTED BY TEMPLE ARCHITECTURE. This technique is for reaching samadhi state which is nothing but the disappearance of perception of subject (you) and object (external world) split momentarily or the cause and effect (stored in the subtle body Chitta). b) Stone deities are also symbolic representations of the well validated Vedic metaphysics Sankhya, laws of nature and nature itself. 4) You dont want to worship idols- no problem u can meditate directly on Nirguna Brahman(formless Absolute reality i.e meditate without having any image etc. in mind). Like Arya Samaaj. 5) You want to criticise something in our religion. Come forward. We are logical. Nyaya, Tarka etc are core Hindu schools 6) You want to accept beliefs as it is. Most welcome. Please go ahead with it. 7) You want to start your journey by reading "Bhagvad Gita"- Sure ! It will toatlly change your though process and attitude towards life. 8) You want to start your journey by reading "Upanishads" - Go ahead 9) You want to start your journey by reading "Purana"- Be my guest. 10) You just don't like reading Puranas or other books. No problem my dear. Go by Bhakti(devotion) tradition. 11) You don't like idea of Bhakti(devotion) ! No problem. Do your Karma(moral duty) Be a karmayogi. 12) You want to enjoy life. Very good. No problem at all. This is Charvaka Philosophy. 13) You want to abstain from all the enjoyment of life & find God - let's go ! Be a Sadhu, an ascetic ! 14) You don't like the concept of God. You believe in Nature only - Welcome. (Trees are our friends and Prakriti or nature is worthy of worship). Its a way to express gratitude to everything that nature has given us (trees, sun, river) having a borrower attitude (like if 1 tree is used then 2 is planted) 15) You believe in one God or Supreme Energy. Superb! Follow Advaita philosophy 16) You want a Guru. Go ahead. Receive gyaan(knowledge). 17) You don't want a Guru.. Help yourself ! Meditate, Study ! 18) You believe in Female energy ! Shakti is worshipped as the divine mother who is the source of all creations. 19) You believe that every human being is equal. Yeah! You're awesome, come on let's celebrate Hinduism! "Vasudhaiva kutumbakam" (the world is a family) 20) You don't have time to celebrate the festival. Don't worry. One more festival is coming! There are multiple festivals every single day of the year. 21) You are a working person. Don't have time for religion. Its okay. You will still be a Hindu. 22) You like to go to temples. Devotion is loved. 23) You don't like to go to temples - no problem. You are still a Hindu! 24) You know that Hinduism is a way of life, with considerable freedom. 25) You believe that everything has God in it. So you worship your mother, father, guru, tree, River, Prani-matra, Earth, Universe! 26) And If you don't believe that everything has GOD in it - No problems. Respect your viewpoint. 27) "Sarve jana sukhino bhavantu " (May you all live happily) This is exactly the essence of Hinduism, all inclusive .. That is why it has withstood the test of time inspite of repeated onslaught both from within and outside, and assimilated every good aspects from everything . That is why it is eternal !!!. Varna Vyavastha which once was totally and only based on your Karma(work) and gun(skill) of a person in which EVERYONE was born a Shudra and then became a brahmin, vaish, kshtriya according to what work or skill he/she chose to develop has gradually taken the shape of birth or surname based caste system. CASTE SYSTEM should be completely eradicated from its roots. Only then can we Hindus unite.

Ano bhadrah Krathavo Yanthu Vishwathah" Let the knowledge come to us from every direction..........!!!

The statement of sagan you showed was from a lecture when sagan was trying to explain how religion was our first attempt to understand our surrounding and how terribly we failed because each religion have their theory about the age of universe. But there were some religions who were far closer and better then the others Such as Hinduism and Mayan. (He mentioned Mayan civilization too, which was missing from the note.)
