I just think it’s not normal in Asian culture at all outside US, Europe or maybe Latin America. in Europe and American culture we got some stuff that is totally frowned upon that is normal in Asian culture that really is frowned upon in America or maybe Europe that would have enough people itching their head. But yeah I just think it’s a culture thing, they just don’t do it.When people look at Asian dramas they’re not that touchy feeling like European or American drama it’s just something they don’t do. it’s not in their culture it’s not normal, you could tell they are very stiff as if they are uncomfortable in roll they are playing (I don’t blame them.) but we from Europe, America, South America you name is quite touchy feeling . So if we do that it would be seen as OK.

I love that I was answering this between male friends and me. Because with girlfriends, everything looks normal for me. I guess that is why we usually say there are many cultural differences between Latin America and Korea, especially when discussing Physical Touch. Also, Rene is right that it depends on the person's personality because usually, in my group of friends, I am the more affectionate one, and my friends just deal with it (obviously, I respect their limits).

I am so much the opposite lol. Most of the time I hate physical touch, and with people close to me, I sometimes tolerate it. It’s a very rare occurrence where I actually want to be physically affectionate with anyone. I don’t even really like hugging my family members. And it’s not because I dislike them. We just don’t do that. Sometimes I will give them a hug and it doesn’t necessarily bother me, but it doesn’t make me happy or anything like that either. I’m even like that with intimate relationships lol. Like I don’t understand the appeal of cuddling, holding hands, etc. usually I just do it because most people feel bad if I don’t, but in my head I’m always thinking ‘how long do I have to keep cuddling with this person before it’s acceptable to stop.’ 😂

  • @Varzio
    @Varzio2 жыл бұрын

I'm European and the level of physical touch really just depends a lot on how close you are to someone and your own personality. I know people who greeted each other via cheek kisses and then those who just say "hi" and maybe give a little wave. Personally I've held hands or ended up cuddling in bed. (My friend is used to sharing a bed with her boyfriend so during the night she just cuddled up to me and I woke up like ???)

There is one display of affection in Korean culture that does not work in the US. I pet my animals and would not like my boyfriend or husband to pat my head. You may find a few Americans who think it's okay. I have a feeling most would find it demeaning. I do appreciate that it is a sweet and kind gesture in the Korean culture.

  • @Anacaona4

I agree. It can be seen as a sign of disrespect and demeaning, as if you were a dog. You don't pet a person's head here. It's okay if it's an adult patting a child's head though. Another thing is depending on the woman, she could get pissed off if you pat her head, because you're touching (messing up) her hair that she worked hard to style.

As another American, I disagree with her comparison of "some" and dating. It may be because there's actually three parts to American dating culture where you go from "talking" to dating to being official S.O.'s. "Talking" is like the flirting stage, which I think is more similar to "some." Dating is dating, and official is exclusively dating that person.

Renee is always spot on with her explanations almost all of this okay with female friends from one woman to another. However with a male vary few of these instances will occur depending upon how each person is, it's always about respect and established boundaries. As a greeting it's common to hug or do an informal handshake and for close friends perhaps a peck to the cheek rarely does it ever extend beyond that. Also touch is always welcome here because as long your friends it's not awkward to touch one another while you speak like patting a friends hand or tapping their head as a gesture. It's just a friendly interaction with no ulterior motives. Loved this their interactions are cute. 😂👏🏼

I get "touched out" sometimes. I suppose it might be a sensory overload issue. 🤷🏻‍♀️ That just might be why I married a Southeast Asian, they aren't very touchy. 😆

I think it is even different from person to person. There are girls that I hug as friends that I only see as friends, but there are also girls who have hugged me that I like as more than friends although they may see me as only a friend. Those are usually one arm hugs. Two armed hugs that are sustained can often feel like a more than friends hug. I got one of those kinds of hugs a few months ago from a girl I had a crush on when it was her last day working with me. She gave out a lot of those hugs that day, but she did often act flirty around me when she worked with me (although I think she had a boyfriend and she's like half my age although she's taller than me).

Oh goodness....me and my bestie are super close. We've been friends for over 20years, practically growing up ever since the start of middle school (in USA) so we have never had any issue sleeping in the same bed together and such. As we grew up, that comfort level has only gotten larger. Her husband told her he knew marrying her meant I came as a packaged deal because we still have girl's night and such for sleepovers and we will watch studio ghibli and other things and just have fun. I'm sure to an outsider, they might get the wrong idea, because when we sleep, we wear very very little clothing and we are okay with that. Like, she was dealing with a pregnancy scare and was upset in bed. I was up visiting her so I crawled in bed behind her and held her close and ran my fingers through her hair to try and offer her some comfort and told her it would be okay and I'd help her get through this. That's how close we are and I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.

I know that the head patting thing is a sweet gesture in Korea but as a Latin American, if someone patted my head I would find that condescending and not enjoyable at all. But that's just me I guess.

Hello. I can say that the level of touch is different for each person but I can also say that in Italy, with friends, we are really relaxed and touching. It doesn't happen right away but with time, the close you are the more you touch, there is no malice, and it's the same for both genders.

I don’t know about america as only been there once as a teen but in the UK everyone hugs and sometimes do one kiss on the cheek as a greeting. But I do agree with Renee as it depends on the people and how close you are with those friends. I feel like in the UK friends are quite affectionate with each other. When they were saying no to the head patting i was laughing because just yesterday i was patting my friends head😆 she was very drunk and i was trying to comfort her. No one think it’s weird here haha

Here, men with women say hello by kissing the cheek (but like from the side), it's like a hug with a little kiss in the cheek, even when you don't know her/him. So I think almost the same as Renee, Korean people are not used to physical contact a lot so I understand that it would be strange for them but I'm really impressed about Seungwoo and Hyeni's answers because if you look to maybe 5 years ago, people would never answered like that so I can see a HUGE improvement in physical contact between people, physical contact it's also important for a good and healthy relationship with someone so I'm really happy to see this is changing in Korea these last years

I am a *very* touchy person. I love giving out really big tight hugs to my close friends and just normal hugs to my other friends. One of my friends tho hates hugs or any kind of touch yet she just always has to do the weirdest flirtiest stuff to me 😭😭 Like, she often either pins me down on the floor or bench or lays in my lap and even sometimes just leaves her hand on my thigh just for no reason. People are now calling her lesbian and shipping us- 😭😭💀🔫 Like, she doesn't have a crush on me she just finds it funny when I'm flustered or get mad at her.

Press X to doubt girl 😂 I had a friend like that and we also got called lesbians and we both denied it for years but whoops, wouldn’t you know at one point we both admitted we liked each other on and off. 🤔 We never dated and stayed friends but did talk for a short period. Turns out we were both gay to a degree or another. Exchange the word “Funny” when you’re flustered or angry for “Cute” and it sounds a lot more accurate to her actions lol. Plenty of people laugh when someone they like does something cute. 🤣 Or, depending on age (no offense meant, but you sound younger), it could be either one or both of you (but if only one probably your friend) just kinda experimenting with the idea they *might* be gay or them trying to figure out if *you* might be, and the experiments would help figure out if such actions provoke anything in themselves or in you. Js, don’t be surprised if your friend comes out as some variation of gay later on. Even if they really aren’t into you that way, they’re at least tryna figure themselves out in terms of sexuality, guaranteed, take it from someone who knows 😅😌 But plenty of young people experiment with same sex and still end up being like “Nah, definitely straight”, so they might not be gay-but don’t surprise pikachu face them if they tell you they are lol.

@@destineeryan6773 Shit girl, you have a good point. Plus, I really won't be surprised if she comes out as gay, she seriously shows it on other occasions not just with me (many female crushes). Also, the reason why I said she prolly doesn't have a crush on me is cuz we actually used to date but just sorta broke it off cuz it was getting awkward and we really weren't interested on either side. I feel like she just sorta likes embarrassing me 😂😂 Your point is still valid tho, we'll see how she comes along lol (Also yh, I am on the younger side, you're correct about that. I'm just not too young, like below 13 cuz then I wouldn't be on yt)

I'm definitely closer to Renee but I have friends more affectionate than me. I have a friend who just lays next to you and wraps her arms around you, or she'll just sit in your lap, or hang off of you while you walk. Everyone is different, some of our friends are fine with it, others hate it. It's all a matter of knowing the people around you and being respectful of their boundaries

As an American, it really just depends on every individual person. Some people will share a hug with a near stranger, Some people hate physical contact, and others love it. I’m one of the people who loves it and many of my friends are too. So things like: hand holding, front facing hug, back hug, arm on the shoulder, kissing on the cheek/forehead, and just in general having some point of contact during interactions are very common for me to do with friends.
