Even if physical media is still available, censorship is a real reason to save older copies of films. I grew up with a VHS copy of Wallace & Gromit: The Wrong Trousers, in which Gromit opens a greeting card that sings "Happy Birthday." It's a very emotional moment. When I moved away from home, I bought the same film as part of the complete Wallace & Gromit collection on blu-ray. However, I was horrified to discover that the newer blu-ray version had re-dubbed the same scene with the tune, "For He's A Jolly Good Fellow", which is not nearly as recognizable, appropriate, or emotional. I'm sure the decision had something to do with song rights, but it ruins the film for me. 😢 Gotta go back and get the VHS.

As a Vinyl record collector, I can tell you right now the releases of physical media. Be it music, movies, video games, books, or whatever is going to go to the Collectors routes for mass consumerism. So each edition of game, record or movie, will have something special about the case, the color of the record, a special chapter for the book, based on whoever is selling the release. For example, the Walmart, exclusive version of a book may have an extra chapter, or the target exclusive version of a video game will have a special steel book with it, or the Best Buy release of a vinyl record will be a certain color they’re not stopping the production they’re just limiting production, upping prices and gouging in the Collectors market..

The biggest problem with digital media is when the company don't pay for the rights to a game 4 years after we pay for it we lose it even though we paid full price for it. Microsoft and Sony have done this to me many many times that's what makes me skeptical on digital only Also the fact that if you have no internet connection you can't play your library of games.

  • @RetroMemoriesUK

I dont have loads of money to keep buying and buying. If i have a physical disc, i can sell it, trade it etc when done. Digital is horrible for me, and it means Sony etc can have sole control of their pricing. Currently i can check several stores to get the best price on a game. If you can only get from one digital store, you have to abide solely by their prices. Which means they could hugely increase the price and you have to pay it or never experience the game.

I have allot of CD's and DVD's, because I also want to actually own it and I have older PC Games. But nowadays it's impossible to own new games on a CD and even if you do they make you install a program and make you download an update to play it so you still don't own the game. I try to spread my games library amongst EA, Ubisoft, Steam because I don't trust them and I think they will try to screw us over. EU laws on certain things are pretty good. So I'm trying to get in contact with the right people in the EU Parlement, because a law is needed that says virtual items are my items... So I don't get robbed by scumbag company's or that all of a sudden they will try to make me pay a monthly/yearly fee to acces the games I paid for. I'm also saving all my digital games so hopefully they still work offline, but what happens when they stop making USBs and External Harddrives for computers? Because the plan is to get everything including your OS on a magical cloud.. Which is just a server farm. I've had an education in IT and 10 years ago I was already tought the steps of how things will change. The idea in the future is that you only own a computer screen and everything else is on the cloud and you own nothing, just like now you don't own Word or Adobe you rent it and pay monthly/yearly fees.. You used to be able to buy a keycode for life

The thing that scares me though is digital can be more expensive than physical; IE Madden football. If I want last years version to save money, it’s still 70$ vs $12 somewhere in a clearance bin

Don't sub to Disney plus, don't buy the games/toys etc. I will reward them with $$$ when they put out something that's non-political and has a good story. For example I went to the movies and saw Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and it was good. Reminded me of pre-covid era MCU when it wasn't about race and gender ideology but a good story with characters you actually care about.

We are in a new reality boys. The (younger) general public does not care about physical media at all. Game companies gonna get their bag regardless if it's physical or digital, so there's really nothing stopping them from going full on digital. A game like GTA6 is gonna be the real test for ALL companies to see how well a heavily desired AAA title will do on digital sales in this generation. We just hate this stuff because we are the old guard and we know that these companies are taking the younger generations for a ride with the digital stuff.

I appreciate physical media, but I don’t have the luxury of having a spare room to house the stuff I want. Living the expat life for 13 years working around Asia and Europe, having a game collection digitally is awesome. My annoyance is that without the logistics of printing manuals, shipping and online stores taking a smaller cut than retail (still too high considering their overhead is less than half of a brick and mortar), the prices shouldn’t match physical media. Most publishers have good discounts if you patient, but some, like Nintendo really don’t. Older apps that become abandonware needs to be able to be backed up better. I worked on some iPhone games back in the day. They are trash, but it’s memory. When my 10 year old iPod touch kicks the bucket there is no way of backing that up. None of my back up apps work on it. And when I transferred the files from my iPad mini, it just had a weird trial period where it would transfer the file, but not give me a back up. There are old iOS games that there are no way of playing anymore. There was a surprising good scene before the IAP model became the go to.

How much more obvious that the industry is crumbling? If both Microsoft & Sony go full digital, they'll turn tail and go against their word once they see the drop percentage in sales. Do you think zoomers are gonna be paying $70-$100 for nothing? I get it, zoomers are dumb, but this is gonna be a big test for the industry. Who truly speaks with their wallets. Nintendo is already sneaking in "digital entitlements" disguised as physical games, none of them are first party games yet, but nonetheless they are doing it. I.E. Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1, Batman Arkham Collection, Star Wars Heritage Collection, Oddworld Soulstorm, and others only partial deliver content on the card the rest are downloadable digital content. Retailers use box art that doesn't include the blue box on the front that said internet connection and MicroSD card required...would this practice be considered as "Bait & Switch"? What happens to these digital entitlements once the eShop is closed? MGS's EULA is nasty...it actually reads that they can remove the game for numerous reasons with no REFUND. Guess we won't own anything and be happy about it? Begs the question of what is actually owned property? Would love to know what Chris, a game store owner, would have to say about this since these games could be devalued for resale if the eShop disappears. What happens if I lose my entitlement rights and get that copy blocked but then go in and trade it in for another game and stick the loss to a game store owner? (This could really happen with the MIG cart and similar products hitting the market in the near future. Crap!!!! This is WAY too long.....sorry.

The end of physical media will drive the console and game prices extremely high, higher than covid did! It's sad that we're slowly becoming a digital society. I will never do digital. If I can't hold it I can't own it , period! And what of ur system crashes, if it's not backed up somewhere or in the cloud then it's just gone...FUCK THAT! Since finding pixel, game chasers, rerto rick, I've started my retro collections...I'm up to 10 consoles now. And starting to focus on buying up games! I'm not gonna get caught slipping again!

While GTA6 and COD can get away with pushing boundaries of going completely digital if they wish, Palworld could and should incorporate physical copies of their game and it would sell like gangbusters. It would at least raise awareness that physical is still a thriving market

palworld sold more than 5 million copies on launch day, from a business perspective, there's no incentive to spend money on production and shipping if most consumers are ok with digital releases, which generate more profit for the publisher and studio

And what about collectors? Think about how many collectors buy that insanely bad game just to compleet the full set? Collectors of games are only growing in my eyes and there are ALLOT of them. And what about collectors editions or limited releases? They gonne lose all the hype & specialty products around gamereleases if they go digital only. I really think they would screw themselfs over to go digital only with games cause honnestly the amount of people that would say: yoo only digital?! Ok nvm im out. Is actually allot bigger then ya'll might think in a worldwide perspective 😊

Chris, poor bloke, is going to have a heart attack, Riff 😂 but, this generation grew up with the height of digital only consoles. It's a cheaper market for manufacturers to make games available online, somewhat beneficial for the Earth too, with less plastic distribution.

You are giving all the control to the companies, they can raise or lower the price. Basically renting(streaming) games, once you stop paying you are kickout.

@@the_australian_viking I meant the after market, owning a physical you can resale it or traded. Digital catalog is easy for companies to control the market (unless illegal downloads). If they want to keep the games at 20 bucks they can, vs finding out in the swap meet for cheaper.

4k Blu-ray Discs are the best quality to watch a movie at home by far but only make up 25% of sales. DVD still has 50% of market. People don’t care about quality just price. Games are already almost all digital, even the disk needs an update from the internet. Best Buy just stopped selling physical media. It is going to end up like laserdisc and be niche.

You can Not make the Blanket Statement that 4K DVDs are the Best Video Quality because that is Simply Not True. In Fact why don't you do a KZread search on 4K DVDs. You will discover that there are Numerous KZreadrs that make Videos telling people Not to Buy 4K's because the Video Quality is subpar. They will tell you which 4K DVDs were poorly Manufactured. The Truth is if a Movie was Not originally Filmed in 4K than you should Not waste your money buying the 4K version. What you are buying is Not True 4K. You are Buying a 4K conversion. The Quality of 4K Conversions are typically worse than the DVD version. Yes many 4K DVDs being Manufactured are Worse than the DVD version. The Quality of 4K DVDs vary Greatly. The Truth is Only around 1,000 movies have been put on 4K (I heard that number from a Movie Industry person. Let's say 2,000 Movies have been put on 4K.) The selection of 4K Titles compared to DVDs is extremely small in comparison. There are around 50,000 thousand available Movies on DVD. 5,000 Blu-ray Movies are available to Buy and around 1,000 4K DVDs available to Buy. The Numbers I am giving you may vary a little but the Ratio is correct. Standard DVDs are by Far the #1 format because that is what the Movie Studios are selling. Most people don't want to pay up to $100.00 to Buy a 4K Movie (Some New 4Ks for Sale cost more than $100.00) if they can Buy the same Movie for $10.00 on DVD. If you Buy a Brand New DVD, Especially of a New Movie and play it the Video Quality is Outstanding. That is if you have a High Quality 4K DVD player and a High Quality 4K TV. All New 4K TVs and 4K DVD players upscale Standard DVDs to Near 4K Quality. They All claim to do this. They claim to upscale All Media to 4K Quality. It is Not True 4K but it does look Incredibly Good. In fact many of my DVDs Look better than some of the 4K DVDs I have bought. Panasonic 4K players even convert SDR to HDR.
