Phyllostachys parvifolia Shoots | 7 Ft In Only 2 Weeks and Still Growing
Phyllostachys parvifolia shoots continue to stretch skywards. They have already reached 7 Ft in height so far in only two weeks after emerging from the ground. How tall will they grow? Stay tuned!

I think it must be an evolutionary advantage to have young/small shoots growing at an angle. When its small, it's likely to be shaded by other plants, so by sending shoots in different directions, it has more chances of finding areas with more sunlight. When it has accumulated significant energy reserve, it's better to focus on attaining height, therefore growing straight. My Parvifolia, Atrovaginata, and Red Margin have yet to show signs of shooting even though I am Zone 5, same as you are. My first bamboo to shoot is Nitida, followed by Bissetii last week, and just barely visible is Black bamboo.

You have a good point! Parvifolia doesn't spread far from the grove each year. The older culms would shade the new ones. Laying more outward would gain them access to more light just as you say. Maybe your other will shoot before much longer. I can't believe you have nigra in z5. Congrats! 😊

@@CountryWhatnotGardens I just have a small yard to grow bamboos. Nigra is grown next to the foundation so it gets extra bit of warmth during winter. And I also protect it. This year though was rather warm for my area. I think it would have done fine even without protection.

Parvifolia is always one of the last species in the genus to produce shoots here. Do you have any other Phyllostachys species producing shoots yet this spring?
