Phragmites Reed Collection for Thatched Roof

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Deanne Bednar of the Strawbale Studio in Oxford, MI shows how to harvest Phragmites as reed for a thatched roof system. Thatched roof is a technique of roof building that has been used all over the world for thousands of years. Phragmites are an invasive plant in Michigan and have been used to build the roofing system for multiple structures at the Strawbale Studio. This video is a part of an upcoming series on basic thatching being done at Strawbale Studio on outbuildings on Agricultural Land. For more information on thatching and workshops being done at the strawbale studio, visit strawbalestudio.org.

Very encouraging to see use of this free noxious invasive resource. I would like to see how to build out of thatches next. It's a similar dream I have to build with these natural durable materials.

Neat. This is creative use of a problem plant. When I first began clearing my mountain meadow, cleared huge thickets of alders. They became my first mulch. Now I let them grow to bush height and use leaves as mulch in place. Started resourcing soil, rocks and mulch from local tire shop. There are local ravine grasses with great sod possibly useful for thatch in future. Raked that section out last year scything dethatched this year's growth. Got two cuttings for mulch. Now sod the roots and look forward to having water reed in the ditch with alders.

This is WoW! Short but absolutely informative. How would I calculate the approximate number ob bundles per m2 roof? Thank you!

Can you say more or less how many such bundles a person can harvest in a day?
