Marty, you and Piximperfect are the absolute Photoshop GOATS. It irritates me when I scrub through other smaller channels content to see that they are obviously stealing your walk throughs, step for step, and putting so little effort into even the appearance of "making it their own". 99% of time, something very minor is causing the issue (i.e." incorrect Blend Mode, wrong layer is active, etc. You could try the "Classic Gradient" which is just under "Gradient" at the top of your screen.

Would this work for T-shirts?

Sure.

Wouldn't have been easier to just select the smart object and go to: "layer > smart object > replace content"?
