Photos I Wouldn't Normally Show You - Mike Browne

We only see a photographers best photos. At my recent Cameras Don't Take Pictures seminar / photowalk in London someone asked how many images I shoot vs how many I show. Great question. We only show our best photography. We don't see how long it took, how many times a location was revisited or subsequent frames of the same image which didn't work.
We don't get to hear the photographer's thoughts either. I want to show you my 10 favourite CDTP images, share my thinking when I shot them and explain why some pretty good images didn't make the final cut.

Was a fantastic day and learnt so much, thanks Mike. It was something we discussed quite a bit, about the fact that you only see peoples best work and not the thousands of photos that don’t work. So really good to see you go through the ones of yours that didn’t necessarily work out. Really looking forward to doing some more of your workshops soon 👍

Love this Mike. It's a great insight into how your workshops 'work'. Looks like mix of instruction, guidance, education and free-form experimentation... As for the glass juggler - I like how you can see his inverted image in the ball in the close up image - like being able to get a glimpse of the 'magic'. Sometimes, it's the things that catch you in the corner of your eye in a picture that want to make you look at it again....

Mike, both myself and my lady have been with you from the very start of your youtube videos and in that time you've been a consistent inspiration and great technical guide that has led us both to not only enjoy a hobby together as a couple but also to earn enough small packets of dosh to afford a few trips away. Its also been a great compliment to our day jobs and the local businesses we work for so has helped them too. For the shots that don't make it (particularly for parties&weddings where we end up with hundreds): a few times now we've smashed them into a short video at about 3 frames per second along with some funny music and delivered to the customer/social media ahead of processing the final images. Every time that has gone down superbly well as a surprise bonus and takes the pressure off us developing&delivering the main photos in a short time frame :-) We'd love to join you on a photography workshop and will be looking into organising when&where. Once again, huge thanks.

Hi Mike, loved this video. It shows that although you are a professional photographer you still go through a process and we all need to take shots to find the right shot. But my biggest takeaway from this is the fact that although the 18-55 lens you use is sort of classed as a kit lens (although an amazing lens) you show that you don’t need the all singing all dancing top of the range lenses to get the shot. Many people myself included feel the pressure of I need the latest and best to be a better photographer. However, we all need to learn the basics. Let’s face it without the photographer a camera whatever price is just a box with a bit of glass on the front. Keep up the great work Mike you are an inspiration to us all.

I love these videos. Simple things that just 'work' in life, like clothes lines and shoe horns, always inspire me and similarly I loved the uncompromising learning experience of arriving home and having to delete 99% of photos I took :) The next step has been sharing my pictures publicly. Now that I have a 'gallery' on Instagram etc, it sets a nice natural standard for my future pictures. Making it even easier to separate wheat from chaff in future photo opportunities. I still delete maybe 98% of pictures I take. But that's an improvement on 99%! I'm only a hobbyist with the camera. It's simply adding fun to things I enjoy anyway (walking in town or country, meeting different strangers, creating 'vignettes' etc). Lovely.

The instagramers... I could swear I saw the same girls when I was at London on holidays this summer. White dresses, taking pictures with a camera, having the city as a backdrop... right outside the exit from the Tower of London. :D Great video Mike. Its always great to see the selection process and why you chose one image over the other. There is a fanfastic book from Magnum, "Contact Sheets", that I strongly recommend to anyone. Its a bit on the same line, showing contact sheets from famous photographers with comments and the selected photograph that is usually a very well know frame. Thank you for sharing. Cheers

I really wanted to come along on this one as I know that area very well but due to a family commitment was not able to make it . Great video which highlights just how much time it takes to get those golden shots. For me shooting street scenes with people is nearly always a black and white must for the reasons you said about the ladies dress clashing with the bridge colour. You absolutely nailed it on the head at the beginning when you said that we only ever show what we consider to be our best work and this will give confidence to all those who think their work is not as good and wonder if all the effort is worth it. It definitely is!! 😀

Loved the images as black and white. The two ball images at the start - I prefer the second. I think it feels simpler with what’s in the frame. The family selfie - definitely works better as black and white. The clash of greens is what I saw first and missed absolutely everything else in there. With black and white I went straight to the face who was looking straight back at us. I really enjoyed this Mike. Even this kind of video gives us loads to think through - love that you have that capacity! Also really appreciate the reminder about the top of the iceberg and that no matter how long we’ve been doing this and how proficient we might be - we still have a load of underneath work with any given image. The rest aren’t failures but steps to the treasure as such. Enjoy those workshops when they come around. I always love hearing about them. (And one day when the kids stop needing my bank account! What I find to be interesting are "photographers" shooting weddings and other events that post ALL of their images into a gallery for the shoot with very little culling or editing. Hi Mike, thanks for this vid and making a great point of the "rejects". I really learned a lot looking at the color vs B&W ( and I used to shoot Tri-X several lifetimes ago). I found that the B&W really "simplified" a busy scene. I found that my eye was really drawn to the main subject in the B&W. In most of those comparisons the color added confusion. This is especially true in the shots regarding the red cranes over the dome. By going B&W the cranes were still an element in the scene, but it did not distract me from the main subject. The only shot I thought looked more interesting in color is the dancers. The color felt like more energy to me, my eye wandered back and forth looking at the various colors, as if I was looking at all the individual dancers in motion. I got a lot out of this vid. Thanks,

The lady artist i liked the colour one, and i would've taken that shot at face level. Thanks for the video. As an amateur sports photographer I have to be very selective with what I give people. I've had teams complain that I've only given them 50 shots out of 700, but that's a decent hit rate and more than I really want to give them anyway. I've had to explain a number of times that using what I think are bad shots, just to hit a number they want, does me no favours at all as a photographer and I won't "hide" the really good stuff by chucking scores of junk into the pile. It's a cardinal sin for me when I see other amateurs chucking hundreds of badly composed, soft, pics up online.

The shot taken from above the artist was the only b&w photo that broke the contrast rule, but is still a very cool photo. The others look washed out to me. Some really cool b&w’s when you got the contrast. I liked the video and you do have some incredible work.

Once again he explained focal length incorrectly and conflated it with perspective, which has nothing to do with magnification. Thinking you can take a photograph with a short lens and then increase your distance to take the “same shot” with a longer lens is a classic photography misconception. You’re literally changing your perspective by stepping. Increasing focal length when you increase distance just magnifies your new perspective and doesn’t create the “same framing” or composition as a shorter lens at a closer distance. That explanation is nonsensical and terrible advice to give with such confidence.

It’s crazy how many bad photos I’ve taken. Some I even thought were bad and it seemed that people actually really enjoyed them, but needed to be edited a little different. It opened my eyes to go back and re-edit the images I thought weren’t really good to bring life back into a time in history.

Thing is, there's a pressure feeling in all of us to only take amazing photos and each image to be better than the last - which isn't reality. We also take good images, mediocre ones, ones we like and no one else does - as well as the inevitable ones that just don't work.

@@MikeBrowne I couldn’t have said it any better. I’ve been in that situation where I take an awesome photo that I’ve very proud of. I get this adrenaline of inspiration to keep shooting and the rest of the photos don’t live up to the 1 amazing shot. As time has gone on, I’ve gotten less hard on myself and the images. This has improved my time with my camera a lot. At the end of the day, enjoying the process of freezing that moment in time more and more has improved my keepers.

Your comment on the ladies on the bridge, taking a photo for Instagram only. It reminded me of a conference - 55 years ago - of a then well-known Dutch solo artist. (Quote;) "Then all those people go on holiday and take their instant camera with them. They take pictures throughout the holiday to see at home what they could have seen THERE." (end quote) As far as the ladies are concerned...nothing new under the sun...right?

Mike, I love the idea of you showing the keepers as well as the rejects. Interesting to hear your comments on both. Can I ask your views on cropping in PP? An example would be the the selfie group around the pram...If you crop out the bald headed guy in the dark shirt on the right, does it still make the image work, in your opinion? You can still see the bridge in the background so can see the location. My style is 'similar' to yours and I think I would have done that if I'd shot this image.

Thanks. I prefer to compose in camera and rarely crop if I don't have too. Maybe a small tweak sometimes. There are times when it's unavoidable, like a bird in the distance because they're small. I like the bald guy on the right so left him in. Would it work, probably but I am a realism junkie.

What was the old saying? "You can tell how good a photographer is by the size of their wastebasket". lol When I was shooting film, I felt good if I had more than one turn out the way I thought it should on a roll. I like the first one with the ball. And the black and white because those red poles are really quite distracting. Yup, A session of shooting freezing bubbles will generally result in 200-400 photos and of those I'll like maybe 4 or 5.

For some situations, for me at least, monochrome works a lot better. The eye always looks around the scene in the image and usually gravitates to prominent parts of the image. If the image is in colour, the eye could gravitate away from the actual point of interest and chase prominent colours. Whereas, with monochrome, there are no distracting colours and the eye focuses on the main subject of the image. A case in point is Ansel Adams. Although he took nearly as many colour images as black and white, he is best remembered for black and white. The pure majesty of El Capitan in black and white would have been lost if the image was in colour.

I preferred the first one of the BW images . It drew me in and begged questions . However , I wasn’t sure it was telling a story , but like the second one it was making a statement . The second image provided location , but that was about it . I think that if those two images were matched with another it might have begun to tell me a story . If that had been possible I would have used up to five images to tell the story . If I had shot either then I would have been happy to show them on Instagram .
