Excellent video! Although considering most of your audience are newcomers to Astrophotography, I would suggest making more budget-oriented videos. You took a great shot with the canon 75-300mm lens on the Andromeda Galaxy, would love to see you push that lens to more and more deep sky objects.

There are videos about modifying your DSLR. Granted, there is no going back, let alone messing it up in the first place. But I have an old Canon T3i that I am considering doing it myself.

I just subscribed to your channel an hour ago and watched ton of videos. Keep posting good stuff. Also really curious, what do you do as a full time job apart from KZread videos?

I work a full time job at a Blues Museum during the day and I'm a full time musician and sound engineer by night. Makes it hard to find time for astronomy and KZread, but I'm single and live alone so I make it work!

I'm really enjoying the channel! There's so much character - We need more of that lizard, though. And I really don't like how close I am to ordering a star tracker. Are there any trackers that will locate the deep space object for you?

Hey Walt. Another great video. The power box, that is something I have been wondering about. I don't like having to change out batteries in my T3i, what seems like every 90 min. So what is that power box you were using, how long does it run you equipment, and how would I hook my camera up to a power box like that? I won't be getting an ASI air, I enjoy navigating and finding the target manually. It also helps with learning the sky. But the power box would be huge for me. And what kind of dew strap were you using that it detects the temperature and turns on and off on its own?? Thanks for your help in advance, and keep up the good work!.

Beautiful image! Glad to see a new video. I was wondering if the harsh weather down that way knocked you out of commission for a while, which would have been completely understandable. I'm looking at having my camera modified. I think I want to go clear glass, but I was reading that some sort of UV/IR filter is essential to prevent star bloating when going with clear glass. What have you experienced so far? And yes, I'd love to know more about your setup! I'm content to continue to shoot low-fi on a budget for the time being, but I would like to start (slowly) accumulating the necessary equipment for more advanced shooting.

Yeah between the intense humidity, otherworldly mosquitoes, and hurricane season it's been hard to get outside lately. But all that is coming to an end! So I decided not to get a clear glass modification because I personally didn't think I would ever try infrared photography. I instead just went for a hydrogen alpha mod. That way I didn't have to worry about additional filters and bloated Stars. It still makes a huge difference!

Hey, recently subbed to you! You often mention being able to do it with just a laptop and star tracker but end up always using your asiair. Would it be possible to get an example of just using a computer to control exposures and stuff? Is that possible without the ASIair? Most of the ‘beginner’ stuff on KZread always uses one with a star tracker, or go completely bare bones with tripod and lens - no in between lol I’d love to use my computer to control the exposures (without spending the $500 on asiair) if possible!

Hi, I have a similar setup with the same guider on my camera's L bracket. Do you find it hard to find a balance point with it throwing off the center of gravity? Are these imbalances too much for the skyguider? I'm worried about damaging the guider

Yes for sure. You just won't pick up as much red. If you go to a really dark area, you are going to get some pretty decent results!

Hey, real quick, what is the music you use for the opening, first 8 seconds?

Great image. I have pretty much the exact same set up but haven’t been using a filter (the ASI Air pro is excellent). Is it a clip in filter?

This is great, I allways learn with this guy. However, title is not entirely precise. Actually the gear is Dslr astromodified + a lot of expensive items. I recommend watching it anyway

Would it be better to buy a CCD camera for astrophotography, as opposed to using a DSLR? I think the CCD cameras are less expensive than modifying an off-the-shelf camera. I want to set up a refractor scope with piggy back cameras for wide field, and a through-the-tube imaging at prime focus. I have a deep trauma left over from a Cassegrain telescope being soaked in a fog bank, and I want to go with a refractor deep-sky compatible.

That is a very good question! I think it all depends on what you are already working with. I got into astrophotography before the pandemic and so my camera was also used for travel. Over the years I acquired a lot of different lenses. It just made sense for me to stick with the DSLR route for a little while and use what I already had. I think people who start out as general photographers and move into astrophotography would probably do something similar. As I build a telescope collection, getting a dedicated astronomy camera will be the better route eventually!

Sorry, one more question: if I am trying to image of a particular star, is there a method of making a star stand out more than the others? Or maybe even the stars that make up a constellation?

Hi Walt, thank you for another great video. I took this video as inspiration and tried it myself last night. However, the result was kind of disappointing. I could barely see the nebula due to the incredible amount of stars in the picture. Do you have any recommendations on what I could do differently to not overload the pictures with stars? What am I doing wrong? Thank you!

The veil nebula is particularly troublesome with all the stars! Make sure you are using a duel narrowband filter like the Optolong L-Enhance or L-Extreme. Use an astro modified camera. And finally make sure you get it at least 3 to 6 hours on the target! In processing you should remove the Stars and process the nebula and stars separately. Try Starnet Version 2 or StarXTerminator.

Related... how do you protect the tablet during the low temperatures in the winter (frost, etc)?

I keep the tablet in a leather case. Closing the case keeps the frost away. I also bring it inside when my rig is shooting for long periods of time. It's totally fine if the tablet loses connection with the ASIAIR. It'll just keep shooting away.

Is there a specific tablet model that you use with the ASIAIR?? And does the power box automatically turn on your dewstrap? How does it know what to turn on? I am interested in that blue box because I live in a bortle 7 and I will have to drive out somewhere remote to image. I did find a bortle 1/2...it had an artificial brightness of 5.25, but there is no power source out there. This has been my biggest question to solve. I have a T3i and it eats through batteries.

I don't think you need a specific tablet. I use a Galaxy Tab, but I can also use my phone as well! The pocket power box comes with a temperature and humidity sensor. It detects the dew point and turns the dew heaters on for you. The only problem with using it in the middle of nowhere is you have to buy some kind of big battery or power station to power it. You would need something like a Jackery 500 or a Goal Zero Yeti 500.

@@deltaastrophotography yeah, that's probably the route I'll go. I'll get the battery and the blue box and go from there. I have seen others use a battery pack, but I don't know how long those work for, and I want to know for sure that I got enough juice to last as LEAST a full night. And in the winter, that could be 12 hours or more. How long does it take to recharge the battery from dead to full charge? Can you recharge it from your vehicle? Is there a way to run a cable from the cigarette lighter port in your car to the battery to charge it?

@@kevinashley478 My Yeti 400 will run my rig for 12 to 18 hours. That's with a large go-to mount, ASIAIR, two dew heaters, and a camera. A laptop significantly reduces it to about 6 hours or less. Yet another reason why I prefer ASIAIR over laptops. I'm not sure about charging the battery with the cigarette lighter, but most of them are solar chargeable and you can get solar panels for them.

@@deltaastrophotography oh ok. I have actually heard that the solar panels aren't very efficient and that it takes days to use solar to recharge even a battery bank. I'm sure I can figure it out. First, rebuild my house, THEN I'm off to image the Heart and Soul nebula for my granddaughter!

I used an M48 to Canon adaptor. When I ordered the telescope, I just called OPT and asked them to send the proper adapter for Canon cameras with the telescope. They were so helpful!

I don’t get it Walt. Just one of your 3minute subs provided a superb capture (albeit looking very green which is not h alpha, is it?). I took 100 subs at 45 seconds each with my Nikon d5500 unmodified with a Sam yang 85mm f1.4 stopped down to f4 and, even stacked, I can’t even see the nebula. With extreme processing in Siri (which is causing me nightmares to try and use) followed by further processing in affinity photo, I STILL can’t get more than an extremely faint (you’d be hard pushed to even see it) sliver of grey in witches broom or the rest of it. My histogram on camera showed 25% to right of left edge. Watching you and people like you is one thing but, having so many issues with software like Siri plus just not being able to get it all right during processing, my images are utter crap.

The green is from the bayer matrix pattern of the DSLR camera. They pick up light in RGGB so a lot more green than red and blue. That can be removed in a multitude of ways. The Veil Nebula is extremely challenging so don't get too discouraged! I've already had to change the name of this video once to include the accessories part. I probably need to change the name again to let people know that this is not really a beginner target. You need an astro modified camera to pick up most of the Ha and a dual narrowband filter like the L-Enhance or L-Extreme to keep the stars from totally dominating the image. I also highly recommend getting no less than 3 hours worth of data! I shot the Veil over the weekend and it was still a challenge!

@@deltaastrophotography I understand the need for a modified camera for the Ha but I never thought for a moment that you could capture so much detail in one sub than could be achieved in 100 stacked 45 second subs. Is the modified camera really that much more sensitive? 100 45 second subs which cannot even show the nebula against a single sub of yours with a modified camera? Really? Or would you suggest I’ve had settings wrong in camera?
