PHOTOGRAPHING PUFFINS on SKOMER ISLAND - WILDLIFE VLOG with the CANON 1DXMKII
I wasn't going to release this video, due to bad audio. However when I mentioned it on a previous video, I received a lot of comments and messages saying you'd like to see it. So here it is...
In this one I visit the stunning island of Skomer, off the Pembrokeshire coast, to photograph Atlantic puffins.
This was probably the video I had most difficulty editing so far, due to wind and bad audio, but I love puffins and it was brilliant fun to try and capture some different images of them in golden light.
The wide angle images are some of my favourite puffin images to date.
I hope you enjoy the video and if you haven't already I'd really appreciate it if you could subscribe to my channel. I'm so grateful for the subscribers I've received so far and look forward to seeing how the channel can grow going forward.

Fantastic stuff Richard. I visited Skomer in 2019, in July on a blisteringly hot day. Got the 11am ferry across & picked up again at 4pm, very hot, very harsh light but WHAT a place! I vowed to go back & stay on the island for the sunrise & sunset golden hours, but covid ruined them plans. I will go back again sometime for sure. Some fantastic images & footage there, very nice. Now a subscriber 👍

Great video :) Audio was too bad in the end and I'm glad you managed to edit it together! Must be really awesome to be allowed to stay for the sunset - I've only really seen puffins on the Isle of May and there the time on the island is very limited and daytime only...

Love the videos Richard! Something about photographing seabirds is so peaceful. I could take 50 photos that I'm thrilled with, or 0 photos I'm thrilled with, and still be glowing for days afterwards.

Thanks Sean. I’m with you on that! Just being out in nature is what does it for me ☺️
Hi Richard, I live about 10 minutes away from where the boat departs for Skomer and I have visited the island on numerous occasions. However, to my shame I have never had an overnight stay which is something that I intend to rectify next year. As you say, it really is a magical place and even better when the crowds of day visitors have left. Of course, being Wales you have to expect just a little bit of rain now and then. Beautiful lighting on those sunset images, obviously something that cannot be achieved on a day trip. All the best.

Hi Robert, Wow! What a wonderful area to live! The sunsets on that coastline are some of the best I’ve seen. I’d honestly recommend an overnight visit, if you get the chance. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment too 👍☺️
Absolutely beautiful shots. I found this as I’m looking to book a trip soon. Any tips would be appreciated!! I’m working on my camera op portfolio for natural history
That was great! I'm glad you decided to share that with us after all! I've never photographed a puffin but I know there are a couple of places fairly near to where I live, where the odd one can be seen, so who knows, maybe I'll be lucky enough to be there one day when one drops in!

Thank you, I’m so glad you enjoyed it. I hope you get the chance to photograph them, as they’re such an incredible little bird! Really appreciate you watching 😊
Great video! I totally agree that it is not all just about getting the perfect image when photographing wildlife, just being in the environment and enjoying what you see around you is just as rewarding :) I'll be photographing the puffins off Mull next May but I'm hoping to visit Skomer Island too!

Thank you 🙏 I’ll be up there next May running tours, so maybe I’ll see you up there 😊
I really like the "volging" format of your videos mate. Your honest and don't pretend that you are perfect, in fact no one is. And doing nature photography is a never ending learning curve. How would we as photographers evolve if it wasn't. Best regards from Conny on the Åland Islands in the middle of the Baltic Sea👌

Thanks Conny, that means a lot 🙏☺️
Just love those puffins, some great images Richard. I’ve heard about Skomer but never been, needless to say its now on my list👌 btw i noticed that your neoprene camera sleeves have stitched edges, what make are they please?
I am planning to go to UK this coming June 2023. Skomer Island is on my list. Where is the pier where you get off the boat? How long is the walk from the pier to The Wick? I guess Dales Sailing takes tourists to the island daily? By the way, great shots. Thanks.
🥰
Thanks for this, some great images. Next time I am back in the UK I would love to capture some Puffin pic. I was thinking of going to Mull, do you think Skomer would be better as was the wide angle shot
@mywildlifeimages

Lunga (off Mull) and Skomer are both fantastic and offer some incredible photo opportunities. The wide angle lens can be used at both places too! You’d love either island I’m sure ☺️
Have you thought about a mirrorless camera? By the way your videos are a pleasure to watch.
