Photographing Landscapes: Woodlands

Photographing Landscapes - Episode 3: Woodlands
In part three of this series of landscape photography tutorials, I provide some tips on how to photograph woodlands. Woodland photography is one of the most challenging genres of landscape photography, and I know it is a genre that a lot of photographers struggle with. However when the best conditions for woodland photography come together it can also be one of the most rewarding.
Rather than just provide another 'top ten' list of tips and tricks on how to photograph woodland landscapes, in this video I talk about why woodland landscapes appeal so much to me for landscape photography, as well as providing some tips and advice finding woodland photography compositions, as well as some photography tips on lighting and composition.

Music used in this video includes tracks from www.Bensound.com as well as some of my own music.

Excellent video! The best video on Woodland Photography. Other channels spend hours fumbling around, beating around the bush and never explain the subject. Sam you did a fantastic video about the subject.

Absolutely, I completely agree Russ! I have to admit, I struggle more with woodland photography than any other genre, but being surrounded by some stunning woods here in Oxfordshire I do just love getting out there and exploring them, and I love following how they change throughout the year. I'm really enjoying your channel, Sam and Hannah, and have recently subscribed. Australia's evergreen forests and woodland don't necessarily present the photo opportunities that your deciduous woodlands offer, but there are certainly some universal hints that I've picked up from this particular video. Thanks, and best wishes.

Some beautiful images Ben. I just wish Torbay had a decent woodland. The one decent one we had was ruined 3 years ago with Ash Dieback. Now the centre section is bare of trees & been replaced with the ivy, bramble, buddleia & weeds. Devon mainly coniferous woodland, with the exception of Wistmans of course. Mist, fog frost snow no we have had none of that here during this lockdown & the police coming down hard if you go 3 miles out of town. I like many are struggling with mental health & wellbeing & not being allowed out of town with my camera is not helping. Working all week in PPE I want to get away from people not go to the outdoor spaces with hundreds of others walking their dogs. Rural Oxfordshire is very scenic in a different way to Devon. Stay safe Sam.

Thank you very much Nicky. It is so sad to hear you have lost your Ash due to the dieback, it is such a concern to think they may be going the same way as the elms. I was also really saddened and disappointed to hear of the damage that has been done to Wistmans recently. That is such a special, but fragile place and it needs looking after. I completely sympathise with your situation at the moment. I work as a research scientist at Oxford Uni, so I've been working throughout the pandemic. I'm extremely lucky to have some beautiful quiet woods within a couple of miles of my home that have provided a haven at the weekends. Since this latest lockdown though I've not been out to do landscape photography since the end of December (hence making this series of videos from old b-roll) and it's been a real struggle. There's a bit of light at the end of the tunnel now I hope, and I really can't wait to get back out there again! Keep safe Nicky, and I hope things will get easier soon. Sam.
