You are 100% correct. At the height of my newspaper photography career in the 1990s, I could have the choice of any camera equipment I wanted. But they were all tools to make taking pictures faster, easier and with more reliable results. Now, I am 73 in two weeks and I am on a government pension. My income is 1/4 of what I used to earn. I now have to make do with a Lumix GX85 that cost $300. There is no discernible difference in the images I take. I have to make do and you know, I get more pleasure from it now because I don't have a choice.

Hmm, what? GX85 for 300 bucks? It was raped by seagulls for a year, and homeless person took it from them and sold to you? New it costs around 800$ without lens, and if you bought it used, near the same price you could have 5D Mark II or III, which gives more pleasant images even with cheap 50mm.

Curious. I got to this channel because a couple of very successful photographers/videographers I was following, they mentioned Mr Castein as one of the very very few photographers they actually follow. Videos like this, beyond technical knowledge, explain so well why they do that. I am not a photographer, just an aficionado, but this video could be directed to 99% of professions. Quality content

I completely agree! My own experience bears testimony to it's veracity. After barely graduating from high school I was gifted a camera (1971). I took to it immediately and soon after came across a photo book entitled "The Floor of the Sky" by David Plowden. I was working at a warehouse during the week and photographing street in Chicago on the weekends. I was shooting Kodachrome and spending much of my paycheck on film and processing. My passion grew and told my father, who was an editor, that I aspired to someday publish a photobook. He told me there was no money in photography or publishing and that I should learn a trade instead. Long story short, I've authored 14 photobooks and, though my income is modest, I'm a happily fulfilled man with wonderful memories of traveling with wonderful classic old cameras, cameras I still use today. Go your own way.

Thanks for the video, perfect timing for my current situation. It wasn't until I was in my 50's that rather than talk to people about what I wanted to do, I realised it was better to just keep quiet, do it, then show them the results. Thanks again.

I have a specific place for each camera I buy and after listening to you today I think I will put the buying on hold in 2024, spend the effort to really enjoy using them again and seeing what I can create.

I still have my pair of 5D Mk I bodies, which I used to work as a weddings photographer years ago. Now I´m enjoying them, together with my 6D Mk I. I wish I had an R3 with all the brand new RF lenses that I see in the photo gear websites. Ayway, I´m still very happy, smiling when I watch my pictures taken with my much more affordable gear. To watch my pictures and smile, allows me not to worry about not having the new fantastic gear. Keep smiling. Keep enjoying. And don´t worry if you can´t afford a certain kind of gear. Greetings.

Martin, your channel has helped me understand that fancy/newest/greatest gear doesn't matter. Your vids on the older Canon models convinced me to search for good used gear rather than forking over big money for new stuff. I've unsubsribed from quite a few channels after seeing that their content had nothing to do with technique. Their only motivation is hyping up the latest and most expensive gear (they always have a link in the description for commission). They rarely if ever show examples of their work outside of product b-roll. I guess that I'm trying to thank you for offering great advice and teaching valuable methods for learning photography.

Martin, I like your comments on: learning to understand your own creative vision, use the gear you have to express your vision, do not rely on the approval of others on what you create, do not be afraid of failure, practice so your output reflects your vision. My first prosumer camera was a Nikon D80 with kit lenses. Later I purchased a D700 with many advanced features. My family and I visited DisneyWorld and I brought my D80 to safeguard my newer camera. I had more fun trying to get the most from my D80 with its limited features. My many photos in all kinds of lighting continues to be my best work. Keep up your good work making meaningful videos! Agreed, which is why I am selling off most of my newer gear and going back to the basics. Like you said, I found thru my own experiences over the decades that the more I have, the less I shoot or am overwhelmed by my choices of tools that it convolutes matters when I want to go shoot. I am more worried about the gear than I am of what images I want to make. All that money spent on gear could have been more valuable to put toward trips to photograph and a few experienced models for hire to help my concepts. I was more productive and creative and also more consistent with how much I was shooting when I had One body and a couple lenses. My photography when I started getting GAS took a hard drop and even when I did shoot with any new gear, I noticed nothing improved, images looked relatively similar to my older style of shooting and quality, if not much less so due to lack of practice. The only thing I improved on was maybe editing techniques, but camera side, one camera to worry about is the best for my creativity and worries.

I shot my first wedding this past weekend using a 5D Mark III main camera and a 5D Mark II as a back up and I picked up 3 ugly graded lenses from KEH a 70-200 F2.8 Canon L, 28-70 F2.8 Canon L, and the 85 F1.2 Canon L. Total investment in gear, $1,800. Charged 500 for the wedding, a couple of more gigs and the gear will have paid for itself. I'm not planning on quitting my day job as this is a side hussle but if anything did happen, I could fall back on this in a year or so as I build up my portfolio. My advice, get a Canon or Nikon DSLR Full Frame, pickup fully functional but cosmetically ugly used Pro lenses. Lenses are more important than the body. I did also pick up a HSS Godox Flash, will need this.

I needed a snapshot camera for my onsite crew to capture 'where, when and what' shots throughout the day. Their phones are hopeless, as getting the images from them is hard. We trialed my old 40D, on full auto, with an efs 18-55 lens (with broken AF & fungus inside of it), focused to 2.5m and then secured with insulation tape. They just blast away happily. After no time at all, the improvement in their shots is remarkable! It's a ton of fun and we've spent the grand total of $0.00!🤠 I don't give a rip what others think. This solution has worked a treat!

Our motto in our Regiment, was "Mock what you don't understand and fear what you'll never become" That has stayed with me for the last 30 years and forced me to learn when faced with something new and to strive to succeed with what ever I do, and so far it has worked! My Father was an engineer and an artist, and he always used to tell me as a kid, "In life nobody will really care about you or what you will do, so just do what ever the hell you want respectfully and without weakness" Best thing he ever told me too!! What stands out to me is that the photographer has been creative and used the elements of art well. For example line, tone, colour, shape, space, composition, dot, texture, volume, and last but not least story telling. Also selective focus and selective use of sharpness and softness within the image.

In the last few months I have been looking at gear and seeing what I could afford and it has really become a stress to me. On the one side I know I need better gear because a lot of what I photograph is in low light and both cameras I have struggle with that. But that looking at other cameras, trying to see if I can scrape together enough money to get one of them and then seeing that I run short has really been a stress. I am now working on portraits and as someone told me, for portraits, I have enough gear already. A few weeks ago I made my own softbox from cardboard and although I haven't used it much, I love it. I think there are challenges that make us better and help us grow. I know I have grown a lot and produce a lot better images now than when I just started, but I will try to focus on my creativity and work at earning enough to be able to buy what I need. Thanks

That is precisely my thoughts on the subject as well, martin. I bought a Tamron 150-600mm (the old version) to get more reach when I photograph my daughters trotting lessons, and in the beginning people would approach me to say something like:" Wow, are you wih the newspaper? Are you a professional? And can we buy prints of our child in the sulky, racing by? It's just a D800 I put the Tamron 150-600mm on. Or a Tamron 70-210mm, which, in fairness, makes a heeluva picture.... even though it isn't as "close" as the longer lense.

    @mikafoxx27178 ай бұрын

All the famous past photographers - had a worse camera than you do. Photography is being at the right place, at the right time, and getting the right angle for the look they want. You'll never be at the right place at the right time unless you happen to already be there for the right conditions. And because of that practice, you'll know how to capture it, with whatever camera you have on you. I took most of my photos on an old Pentax DSLR, with a manual focus 50mm. These days I use a d610 with a 24-120mm, or a 5D classic with a 40mm 2.8. the much dated tech of the 5D, while noticeable, isn't night and day different than modern 14 stops of DR Sony sensors. Expose well. Use manual if you have to, and you'll get quick at it with time. You're allowed to blow the highlights if they aren't the subject of the photo, or have dark blacks as well.

You nailed it Martin, and the advice you gave goes beyond photography. At least in the US, there is a saying, “Keeping up with the Jones’” which means always getting new stuff, or doing new things just because someone else is getting or doing those things. It’s a waste of time. My photography is simply my hobby. It’s what I do because it makes me happy. Never have I ever sold a print, entered into a contest, or even posted a video to showcase my pictures. Nobody cares about my pictures and furthermore, I don’t want anyone to care! If I share an image it’s because what I thought was in the image was cool and hoped someone else might think it was too. I’m not looking to be the next great photographer. I don’t want that pressure or criticism either. As for the gear, that’s more tricky. Does anyone “need” the newest body or f2.8 lens with weather sealing? No. Not if they’re a hobbyist, or even someone doing part time work as a portrait photographer. But, if someone has the funds and decides they want to spend their disposable money on gear, then more power to them. I feel I fall into that category. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve had a fascination with cameras. From my 1980s Polaroid to my Yashica Point & Shoot, to my Nikon D40, Canon EOS R, Canon 5D2, I have taken pictures of stupid random things. I’ve also taken pictures of my parents, grandparents, and other family members who are now dead and gone. The cameras simply facilitated my ability to remember good times in my life. Nobody is wanting to buy a photo of my grandfather working on his old Model T in his garage. But man, I find pictures like that priceless. I traded my EOS-R for two used RF lenses. I could’ve purchased the lenses new from Canon but I had the R which was collecting dust since I bought the R6 Mark II. So I traded and I’m now enjoying trying to get pictures of far away animals because my new camera body has animal eye detect! Did I need that? Nope. But I didn’t know I was missing out on some new kind of fun until I had the new body. I don’t care that it’s “only” 24 megapixels. Yeah, it takes sharper, faster photos than my 5D2 does but not necessarily better. The R6M2 is worlds easier to use than any camera I’ve owned but honestly, when I get done editing pictures from either of my bodies and show them to my wife, she can’t tell a difference! My dogs, trucks, motorcycles, and wife don’t care if I use a fancy mirrorless camera, a 15 year old DSLR, or my iPhone 13. A picture is a picture. The one you take is likely never going to be the best ever taken, but if it means something to you - if it makes you remember a time or a place or a feeling or a smell or how you felt when taking it - then nothing else matters. And more than likely, when I’m dead and gone, somebody is going to find my pictures and say, “Why in the world did he take this picture?” And they’ll all be tossed in the garbage! Thanks Martin! Your friend, Keith

We have the same saying this side of the pond as well! I think the r6m2 is going to be one of those classics, what it offers for the price is amazing, and i think its perfect for you really. I always think my message comes across a bit like im against new gear, im really not as i use it myself and im eyeing up a z9 right now. But everything you said is right, its just making life easier, a picture is a picture as you say, i really like that. Hopefully your work wont end up in the bin!!!!! You really hit on the power of photography with the story about the picture of your grandfather, stuff like that is priceless. In some ways we dont really take those kinds of photos enough any more. We just try to take photos that impress people too much.

The sooner people understand the camera is just a tool in there toolbox,a tool to get the job done , professional or otherwise it's a tool , here's a challenge go out and take a few shots not just any old thing will do, and don't change a single thing in post, don't enhance it don't do anything, now what you see is what you get if you took that shot on 35mm film. So take the time frame up and click.

This is so true man love your channel and I totally agree with you about so many things 1. about the old cameras sensor I love them my favourite shots all time I created with canon DS1 and a Nikon D300 right now I am a Nikon z5 user because of my video work but for photo shoot I lobe using my older camera bodies 2.new gear only taking of the stress on a higher pay job scenario like u saved but not make you better photographer ! I am so glad I started my career with basic camera and learned the fundamentals of photography GREAT CHANEL AND KEEP GOING

Good advice all around. I worked as a designer for 40 years only to realize I was doing the wrong thing. Doing photography as a hobby all along. Now I’m thinking I’m too old to do anything. Due to the luxury of observation most of the pictures we hold as the high water mark could have and probably were taken on very average gear. Be creative and don’t worry about it. Being critical is easy. Be willing to take risks.

Now then, I dont like this too old to do anything attitude H. I see it like this, if you take better pictures than someone half your age then you get hired. And you push the angle of life experience. You can absolutely make your age work in your favour, its all down to how you preset yourself to people. I get messages from guys in their 20s asking me if they are too young and no one will take them seriously. Everyone has their worry.

I'm changing my gear actually, not for the reason you may think, at 69 and recently went on a walking holiday my canon 50d & battery grip , lens , was like carrying a bunch of bricks in a rucksack, so I'm going for a Fujifilm X1 and 50mm lens , much lighter. no other reason.

Great advice! If you are worried about what others are thinking about you, get over it and if you are stressed about your equipment (and its only what the advertisers are wanting you to buy anyway) then do what I do and that is to put black tape over the name brand of your cameras and model numbers. This has multiple benefits. You can do a wedding with that old favorite the Nikon D700 and the brides father isn't comparing your so called substandard to his. Or you could be in a rough part of town where you are afraid someone is going to mug you because they are clued up on the value of your camera. I used to work with a pro wedding photographer back in the film days who used plastic SLR cameras and display his amazing images in his shop window. How do you sell a $300 pair of sneakers to a kid who lives in a ghetto? You'll be somebody!

Very wise advise, Martin. Thank you for sharing. I think gear matters if you enjoy using it which can lead to better photos. Too much gear blocks creativity. I am a hobbyist who's lucky enought to have stable finances (pursued a different career). I recently started printing my best photos in larger sizes and I have noticed that there's one particular camera that is a common factor for all my favourite photos. Perhaps, this particular camera stands out above the rest and it is no way the latest and greatest nor it is mainstream. I will consider selling off some of my gear in 2024 (will probably wait for spring). Time will tell but nevertheless, thank you so much for this video and for sharing your advise.

This is such sound advice. I’ve gone from my 5D Classic with vintage lenses to experimenting with some very cheap 60s,70s and 80s Praktica and Yashica film cameras. First you get to learn the mechanics by restoring them and bringing them back to life then you get the slow motion, thoughtful joy of using them…….and waiting patiently for the results!

Just come across your channel and working through your videos: What an inspirational chap you are, seriously. I must admit to always looking over the precipice into the pit of 'new gear', stuff I cannot anyway near afford and probably never will be able to, so I do the best I can with a second hand Nikon D810, which I really like and a D500, Sure the better AF and tracking would be nice, but it can make you miserable always looking at gear you can't have and to be honest being only an amateur 'snapper' with fast failing eyesight the two ancient bodies I have will see me out, but, that blasted precipice of 'better gear' is always there like a dark cloud. Wonderful videos and sound advice to be pondered over in photography AND in life in general. :)

You need to focus just on the photography and not the gear. You won’t realistically do anything with a new camera you can’t do now unless you are into video. Good luck and keep at it

Hi Martin. There are photographers who are defined as such by HMRC, and the rest of us, the majority, who don't fit that criteria. The aspirations of many of the latter lead to envy and negativity of the former. I take pictures and edit on my phone for my own pleasure, I shoot whatever takes my fancy and enjoy what I do. The key point in what your saying, for me, is for people to take their pictures, their way, and find their shooting style as a result. Gwan Martin.
