On occasion something goes wrong and the model or photographer feels taken advantage of or that their time was wasted. In this video myself and formal model Faye Hollins give our top 3 Do's and Dont's when it comes to TFP shoots and our perspective on why things might not work out during a collab. Check it out!

    I was actually researching this topic and came across your video. I think it all boils down to communication. I wanted to throw another tip out - use Pinterest boards. They are great for communicating the vision of the shoot as far as styles, locations, poses, etc. great video, keep it up - good info!

    Definitely for new photographers! I have to agree to disagree with your suggestion unless you are speaking of photographers who are just starting out. Time is money and when you reach a certain level as a photographer you will always give up more time. When everyone goes home you are still on the clock. The best thing a new photographer can do is get people they know or a find of a friend that just wants to have fun. Study your craft and try different lighting set ups ,etc.... Document what you've done. When you are ready the models will come. Then you can reach out to agencies once you can consistently create the images you have as a vision. When you start offering models money you are setting yourself up. The only time you should pay models or any other talent is when you are getting paid to find the models/talent for a job. TFP is just what it is , Time For Print. For some reason people choose to make it more than what it is. As a photographer our time is just as equal in value. I do know some people may have no choice but to pay one day due to their locations but here in Los angeles that is not the case. For those people I would say use people you know first and don't pay until you are for sure ready to build your portfolio to submit to agencies. The models you choose to pay better look like agency's model or you will waste your money. I understand this is your youtube and I don't mean to be disrespectful but I can see where your comment can be misleading to new photographers and models. It remind me of a comment some model made saying that photographers should pay because they just press a button. Lol! I hope that you understand that this is base off of my years of experience and most of the photographers I know will agree. Now, if they want to be nice then, fine. Giving more than the next person isn't fair and will make others think you owe them more than what you all came together to create. I find that a lot of photographers don't know their rights or what value they bring to the table. I will say this before I go, if you total drop the ball on the shoot and can't deliver a decent image then you should look to compensate everyone for their time. Well, Thank you for your videos. I'm happy they came into my suggestion area. Much continued success to you.

    TFP is only good when you are new then you need to get models and photographers that are in your league witch can be hard to determent. I work 25% as a photographer and do a lot of TFPs with people I like working with other then that I rarely take on new models for TFPs unless they are good och very good looking. I need to put food om my table and pay my bills I cant give away my work and all the equipment money I spent on anyone. TFP today is hard and many models think they are better then what they are and wants money from new photographers. I wish people would learn to have fun instead of bickering about photoshoots.

    Thanks so much for the advice it was super helpful, is it okay for models to bring contracts for photographers to sign for a TFP shoot, too often I’ve done shoots and never got my pictures in return

  • @JasonOsbornePhotography

    @JasonOsbornePhotography

    4 жыл бұрын

    Alexis Soleil you’re welcome! I’d suggest you definitely communicate before you shoot how many images you hope to receive and by a certain date, contracts can be useful but for collaborations I can’t see how they would hold much weight since no money is being exchanged. Communication is definitely key 🔑

    Check instagram using your city. So I am in Houston and would search #houstonphotographers change it to your city and see who pops up and reach out. You may not get everyone to work with you but its a great way to get started.

    What about outfits if you want a certain look like let's say a 70s vibe would the model come up with the outfit or the photographer has to have the outfit or is it like both do what they can to make the outfit happen

  • @skylarstarks

    Jason Osborne I’ve being able to seek out amazing photographers who don’t even realize they are amazing. Getting in before they start charging for tests or blow up. There’s nothing I hate, except when someone asks me to do tfp and I’m not feeling their style so deciding how to respond tactfully is difficult.

  • @kaamkic

    Jason Osborne I hate it when people are a little too specific with what they want in TFP. People often times use TFP interchangeably with “free photoshoot” which is not what TFP is.

    @mrg6424

    @@kaamkic Please elaborate, I’m curious to know what you mean. TFP means Trade/Time for Pictures/Prints. It’s free regarding monetary exchange, but bartering can be equally, and often more expensive for photographers. So if that’s what you’re getting at, I understand.

    @@mrg6424 this was a year ago my guy. I mean when they basically have a specific photo shoot in mind that they want but don’t want to pay the photographer. Like doing a “wedding style” shoot TFP that’s just an actual wedding.

    I thought TFP meant no money involved. You’re supposed to pay the model? And also give them something extra? I thought you just both get the pictures.

    DX2tI it typically does, not sure where we said you have to pay the model and give extra. I think we just said to be considerate of the model and help out in other ways other than paying directly

    If it’s TFP, why would there be monetary compensation for the model!? That defeats the purpose of trading for pictures/print.

    @@JasonOsbornePhotography I also agree gratuities can be appropriate, but the way you initially stated it, made it sound mandatory. Too often today the lines are blurred on what models should expect (especially when hired), but the one constant that remains is the photographer ends up in the red having to come out of pocket on expenses, for any un-commissioned shoot, and those expenses include retouching which most people overlook or dismiss.
