I plug my X-Pro 3 directly into the computer, it doesn't come up as an option in the Navigator though, so I have to copy to a folder on my PC first. When I go to ingest nothing comes up under disks for some reason. Any ideas?

I'm not sure PM will recognize the camera. Try importing your images directly from the memory card.

I've never had an issue with this. There are two things you can do: In the Ingest dialog box, on the right side, under "Filter Files", make sure the lower option says Copy RAW and non-RAW photos. Also, if you're on a Windows computer, you can follow these instructions as per the Photo Mechanic Help site: docs.camerabits.com/support/solutions/articles/48000340654-use-gstreamer-to-view-video-thumbnails-and-previews-on-windows What kind of computer and camera are you using, and what kind/format of video files are you trying to import that's not showing up?

Great tutorial - thank you! After Ingest, I've selected my "new" folder, but the images do not populate. I've shot in RAW format, and I'm trying to upload directly from my SD card. Any ideas as to why I can't see the photos in PhotoMechanic? Thanks!

Michelle, not sure. The first thing to do would be to try and find the images you just imported, in case they went into different folder. Open the "Ingest" box and double check to make sure the images went into the right folder. If you see a different folder under your "Primary Destination," then you can go see if your images are in there. If so, you can then move them to your regular "New" folder. If the Primary Destination path is correct, then I'd say try to ingest again, and then reopen the folder inside Photo Mechanic. Let me know if either of these solution work. One question, are you trying to view the images a regular browser window inside Photo Mechanic, or are you trying to view them inside the catalog section of Photo Mechanic Plus?

What is your Photo Mechanic Plus workflow when you want to make non-destructive edits in Lightroom? How do you reconcile the two different catalogs?

Dan-as always, thanks for the effort and sharing. I am still examining whether to commit to PM. Presently, I am relying on Apple's Finder which is NOT very useful with 30k images! My question is whether I can cull images on the SD card WITHOUT ingesting all the images that I do not like? It seems that first you load the images and then go through them. Is there anyway NOT to load the images onto my external hard drives but just review them before ingest. Thanks in advance. Thumbs up.

Hi, I just answered this question in your comment on my regular video, but basically, yes: you can open a contact sheet direction from your memory card and perform all of the edits as normal. Basically, PM doesn't care where your images are stored, it's simply looking at folders, and it doesn't care if the folder is a hard disk, a shared folder or a memory card.

Thank you Dan for this very helpful tutorial. I have a question: You gave your pictures a lot of keywords and information. You gave your pictures a lot of keywords and information. There is a search box in Photomechanics, but searching in this is a mystery to me. It would be nice if you could create a tutorial on this. The acquisition of the plus version is currently not an issue for me because I want to get to know the basic version first

Armin, thanks for your comment, I'm glad you found this helpful. Regarding the search box in Photo Mechanic, it's quite powerful. It works in two different ways: "Find" and "Search." Find allows you to search and find photos within your open contact sheet. Using Command-F (Mac) or Control-F (Windows) will bring up a detailed search box, where you can more thoroughly refine the parameters of your search. Spotlight Search (Mac only: Command-Option-F) allows you to search your entire file system on your computer. You can do a quick search, or add any number of parameters to your search. You can also use the search bar at the top left of the window to do a basic search of your entire computer/file system, and you can search things like captions, names, file names, keywords, locations, etc... Here is the Photo Mechanic manual section about the search functions, it will explain all the features in more detail. Hopefully this helps you understand how it works a little bit better: wiki.camerabits.com/en/index.php/User_Manual_Flat_View#Searching_and_Finding_Photos

Laurie, inside PM Preferences, follow the arrows to the page called "Preview." On the upper right side of that pane, you'll see the command to "Automatically advance to next photo when:" That's it. 🙂
