Photo Backups While Traveling | Landscape Photography

Backing up your landscape photography photos while traveling is an important part of the workflow. There are many different ways to accomplish this. In this video, I look at my current method for backing up photos while on a landscape photography trip.

Nice to see other photographers method of backup! Nice the Apple IPad Pro can do all you need when you don't want to bring your laptop.

Thanks! I’m always curious about how other photographers do certain workflows too - I find I can learn a lot! The iPad pretty much comes on every trip, so being able to use it as my device to copy files works out well for me!

Great process! I'm curious if an Iphone 15 could be used instead of the Ipad?

I have not tested it with an iPhone 15, but I would think it would be a viable option.

I backup to a gnarbox 2 in the field or when I’m driving back from a shoot. Then I have a backup on the second card in my camera. If it’s real important images I’ll back up to a SSD as well as a thumb drive to have four copies. I usually use 64gb cards so it’s easy to backup and I can have several of them instead of big capacity cards.

How do you like the gnarbox? I've seen them, but then read they were having financial difficulty which made me a bit nervous to try them out - mainly due to support availability in the future. I tend to shoot something like a 64GB card as well instead of one really big card. Sort of a way to limit how much is lost should a card corrup. Thanks for watching!

Helpful video. Thank you. I’ve got an iPhone 15 Pro Max that I will have to see if I could do that with. I’m heading to the Camino in a couple weeks, and don’t want the added weight of an iPad. I’m thinking of bringing a Pocket 3, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and maybe an action camera. I’m taking my 14 year old daughter, and we’d like to make a home movie/vlog. Should we shoot it all in 4k60?

If you are using a Pocket 3, there might be an option to sync the high quality video to the phone giving you sort of a backup. As for video setting, I use 4k30 for pretty much everything. The exception being if I do slow motion b-roll, then I use the SloMo setting on the Pocket 3 usually.

Great video. I have a similar process, but with some older equipment: A MS Surface Pro 6. I initially just back up to that drive, for double redundancy, but am going to start using a seperate drive. What messed me up the first time I did this was that I started editing those files in LR on that computer, which created another catalog. LR catalogs always confused me... suggested topic for another video? Thanks!

Thank you! Yeah, I tend to like using a separate SSD drive - partially I don't have to stress about not having space on the iPad (I tend to overshoot still, so on a longer trip - I tend to have an embarrassing amount of images at the end)! Lightroom can get tricky with catalogs. I'm actually fairly boring/simple with how I use mine - one big catalog. I will dive into some more Lightroom software related videos on the channel again!

Curious what you use for long-term storage at home - would a NAS or cloud storage fit well into your workflow? Obviously dependent on internet, which can be slow - but transferring to your home NAS before you even leave the hotel may alleviate/eliminate the headache of getting your work back home safe with you.

For home, I use a Synology NAS for my backups and regular Time Machine backups of my actual laptop. The Synology then makes a copy of my "Gold" directory to an externally attached USB drive and then I have one folder that gets backed up to Backblaze B2 storage. (that latter part could use some work on my diligence of getting stuff into that cloud-backed-up folder). Dumping to the cloud would be super great and help protect things even more. My biggest issue there is always the Internet speed (or access to the Internet for long enough to get a good upload). For Death Valley, I was without Internet pretty much until I got back to Vegas to wait for my plane. So a couple of hours in the airport with right about 100B of photos that would have needed to be backed up. For the RMNP trip, I was with hotel wifi for an overnight period of time, but only on their terrible wifi. For that trip I shot most of my video for YT off my phone and even it was struggling to backup up that content to iCloud overnight. I think Internet speed is my biggest problem with getting things to the cloud on time when traveling.
