PHOENIX POINT is more than XCOM ON STEROIDS / Turn Based Tactical Glory / Review

Ойындар

In 2021 Phoenix Point finally became what I would call a releasable game and crams everything you could imagine into a turn based "earth defense simulator" type of game with a deep strategic layer. This is awesome in general but has some problems. Check out my video to find out what's good and what's not so good about the game.

Anyone else find the lack of customisation a problem??, I mean, coming from xcom 2 I could give every soldier there own unique look, can't really do that in phoenix point... I'd say that was it's biggest flaw for me, other than that, I love the game.

The biggest mistakes this game had were Releasing on the epic store killing any chance of getting a community Not having modding support The smartest thing firaxis did was support modding in xcom 2 game’s like the fallout 4 of turn based tactics games, purely held up by the work of the community. Phoenix point could of benefited greatly from having a dedicated modding community.

@@WatchMysh that really doesn’t matter now The game barely has any exposure or community. The most attention this game got was negative all the way back when they took the epic deal stabbing their kickstarter backers in the back and the game launching as a buggy unbalanced mess. As for the behemoth console edition I don’t see the community getting much larger, how many console players actually play tactical turn based strategy especially one with no advertising.

I'm a Bronze tier backer of Phoenix Point. My name (Setokaiva) is in the credits. After playing the game since its release, and most recently trying out the new Terror From the Void mod's 1.0 version, I'm convinced that the game's biggest shortcoming -- the fact that there's so much going on at once -- is actually the point. It's a feature, not a bug. You're supposed to feel like you're drowning. You're NOT supposed to be able to take on every mission. Resources are meant to be scarce, skilled soldiers are precious, your soldiers get tired, and your ammo runs dry. If you're taking on everyone everywhere and just wiping the floor with the enemy, you need to turn up the difficulty. It's a similar story with XCOM. Stomping every fight isn't fun. Fighting impossible odds and earning your win is the point to Phoenix Point-pun fully intended.

Very interesting to hear a more positive opinion of this game, it sounds like in many ways it's exactly what I wanted- It sticks a middle finger at a lot of the conventions of modern XCOM for a more serious, sober, desperate experience without relying so heavily on dice rolls. The sheer vitriol towards it early on always kept me away.

X4 is a tough one. Beneath the not-so-good UI and often janky AI lies a great simulation. If you're okay to work around these issues you'll find a true gem in my opinion. But I can fully understand if people have different opinions on the X series. It's not very polished, stubborn and eats up a lot of time.

What kills me the most in these types of games, is the plethora of rich lore where you see all these creatures/races/factions and you're stuck with only being to play one. Then on top of that the other thing that always knocked my enjoyement mostly out was the ticking bomb gameplay where you have to rush through everything. Strategy is good and all, but I'm one of those that likes to take their time to get ready for the big final. If I feel rushed into it it kind of makes me stop and look for something else. It just kills me how much I love the lore of these game but can never get to finish any of them because of gameplay. The customization on this game looks awesome.

Well TBH that chore factor is the main reason I haven’t played an Xcom like game to the end. The latest XCOM like game I tried was rebel cops and I stopped playing on that one huge map where the round based combat seemed more like a hindrance than a help to make tactical decisions in fast paced situations. The combat in Battlestar Galactica Deadlock or Into the breach always felt fun as the round based nature helped gameplay instead of unnecessarily slowing down gameplay…

Minor thing but character customization is much worse because here everone is realistically having helmets all the time. @@theclone9123. The base logic is that shooting is more realistic. So if your soldiers don't wear helmet, enemy will target that part and your soldiers will die more easily. Better XCOM might be an overstatement. But a more complex one if you are willing to create the mood and the vibe by yourself... Have fun!

I finished the game and it was nice. My biggest problem was a race against the clock. I want xcom-like game where i can take my time in campaign. Also i didnt like factions, they felt flat to me. This game was a one timer for me, interesting concepts but no likable enough to play multiple times.

The only part of the game that I'm not liking the sound of is the race against the clock. I want to be able to spend time exploring, and having a fixed time limit, get this done in 10 minutes or lose, is never fun to me.

That's too bad. I play XCOM2 WOTC on console and love that extended clock so I can do what I want, but this sounds like a deal breaker to me. Why have all this stuff if you don't have enough time to even get near it? I was really interested in more XCOM like games for PS4, but it doesn't seem like this one is it with that clock problem.

This game lacks the flair XCOM had. There's no weapon switching animations. Sounds are also generally bad in comparison. 5:04 Only early game is fun as but as soon as you are controlling 2 bases and multiple squads it becomes a chore. This game has a lot of things you can do but the problem is their emphasis on quantity over quality where most of what you can do is shite. Soldier progression is also lackluster without many interesting perks you can take. Vehicles are great but you can't customize their loadout. Removal of RNG from gunplay is also a nice step up from traditional turn based but introduces it's own problems like shooting into your own cover like an idiot. I had hoped with updates they would add better animations and sounds because the world just feels dead.

The handgun Terrible all the animations suck period. It’s not better I want to give the game more time because PP takes to long ,some missions are just dumb. You land on the planet to save this girl that was so dumb ,you end up having to survive just a hop on her plane or aircraft I mean wtf .

despite all your complaints (some of which are certainly valid) this is still a better game than Xcom. Xcom is just doesnt have the same level of choice and tactical depth in the fights and I just find that oversimplicity to not engage my brain sufficiently. ITs just too shallow, its style over substance.

Looks like a very complicated game. And the late game depends very much on the right/wrong decisions that you have made in the early stage. Not my cup of tea. It is much better for a game to allow you to correct/redeem the mistakes that you have made previously. In our real world, most of us will have some kind of second chances. I hope games like this can give players second chances too, instead of having to do everything all over again from the very beginning.

Xcom will always be king ,PP animations suck boring atmosphere just seems lacking flash. Missions are really dumb at times, like living on a planet to save this girl already in a aircraft and you’re fighting to survive ,when you should’ve just picked her up what the hell. They didn’t think that one through she should’ve been in your group at the start of this you help me fight to get to the aircraft . Or can you control her to stay alive until you get to her and then evacuate. Oh and they miss a lot i here that comment over and over. Sorry bruh PP is ok not better then XCOM
