Phoebe Bridgers - Scott Street (Live) | Vevo DSCVR

Музыка

Phoebe Bridgers - Scott Street an exclusive live performance for Vevo DSCVR, the channel for the best in new music.
It’s a real skill to wax forlorn without submitting to the depths of despair. In the last two years Phoebe Bridgers has shown us just how articulate she can be regarding the troubled side of life while still touting the small joys that mark most day to day experiences. Again and again, the singer-songwriter revels in the marvels of the emotional deets that shape who we are. After critics erupted over the eloquence of the 23-year-old’s ‘Stranger In The Alps’ (get the ‘Lebowski’ reference?), the Silver Lake-based Bridgers went through a wave of Joni-Jackson comparisons. Elements of the masters dot her songs, but some of her more recent heroes are Sun Kil Moon’s Mark Kozelek and Elliot Smith - tender wordsmiths whose best work is both vulnerable and poised. If you know Bridgers’ “Smoke Signals” and “Motion Sickness,” you might’ve heard her “Scott Street” before, too. But not like this. Our DSCVR performance turns the tune, inspired by a sunset stroll through her Echo Park hood, into an epic lament. Swirling fiddle lines and cloudy guitar flourishes prove the singer knows exactly what she needs to bolster her designs as she closes with farewell line of “don’t be a stranger.” Masterful.

There's an interview about this song on song exploder, where phoebe talks about when they first mixed it and were listening to it with her producer... the outro finishes he spins around in his chair with a single tear down his face and says "it's like you're looking back on your life and it's all been a failure" lol they took that as the best compliment haha I'll never forget that 😭

"Anyway, don't be a stranger" really manages to capture letting a little bit of that that manipulative and abusive person into your life once everything is said and done. There are numerous interpretations, but damn. Gets me every time.

I’ve always understood that lyric as that time where you still wanna be friends with your ex even though that’s just an excuse to still have them in your life and keep up with them. And even though you know it’s unhealthy and you should cut it off totally, you can’t. Fascinating to hear what that means for everyone else.

for me dont be a stranger is when you want to still friend with someone but you both are getting old and are busy and the things are not the same, but you dont want that this person that you like so much became a stranger one day

for me, "don't be a stranger" is sort of a like wanting to be friends with someone, but being too afraid to. Maybe the other person is very emotionally direct and honest, and I am just not capable of it at the time. Or maybe, it's the other way around, and they're not comfortable with parts of me, but I like them and don't want them gone. Sometimes, it's also about wanting connections in life, but just not even having the energy due to being too depressed, tired and burnt out with life. It really feels like it's like a cry for help type of phrase. A desperate extending of your hand to someone, yearning for their affection or friendship, and secretly hoping they'll somehow magically understand what you don't have the guts to tell them directly. Sigh :(

I’ve always seen this song as returning to a place you used to love weather it’s an old town or school or whatever. Being excited to see and reconnect with all your old friends again but slowly realizing time has moved on and those are no longer the same people you became friends with back when. “Don’t be a stranger” of course is the last thing that is said in the song just like it’s the last thing said in any awkward conversation with someone you haven’t seen in a while that you have no intention on seeing in the future either. She crushed it with this song. This is easily one of my top 5 favorite songs of all time.

Clacking Computer there’s a reason for that. It’s crap. Pub bands are better than this. Although they don’t look as gorgeous do they. One day I will find a new band made of of real musicians. This is an abysmal copy of Alanis Morrisette. They were par for the course in the 90’s. Now this nonsense and Pale Waves. Similar to this. Wear all black but play all major chords. Sorry...style Ive substance is killing music. How are One Direction more will known than Queens of the Stone Age? Or Ed Sheeran selling more records than Nine Inch Nails? Drake having more success than How to Destry Angels? Apathy music. There I’ve said it. Sorry. Needed that.

lol Stranger in the Alps is a fantastic, critically acclaimed album. Your opinion is wrong. Also there are loads and loads of fantastic bands around today "made of real musicians", youre just too blind to see them because youre stuck in the past.

Jay how is Nine Inch Nails and How to Destroy Angles “Stuck in the past”? The technical kit they use would make these dotards wear flares and sing about Flower Power and San Francisco. I know music is subjective...BUT ITS REALLY NOT.

Clacking Computer. Odd how when someone like me makes a sound about modern pop I get told I hav no heart or feeling for modern music. As a session drummer, guitarist (rhythm and lead), synth and oscillator freak...Bitwig Studio and Omnisphere with Soundtoys Plug Ins who plays piano and reads music...I must have no heart. You say yourself “90%of mainstream music is is shit”. So thoughtful chap...why are you saying 90%? Are you judging 9/10 acts as shit? Makes you remarkably like me mate. I’m just saying 93%! I think Katy Perry is brilliant. I’m up for art. I’m not up for cliched crap dressed up as genius and then that fake genius gets supported by mainstream media...for a reason. I don’t think music is being made to be subjective. It’s targeted. Music to me is as sick as society. To me they always mirror each other...in many ways. Takes all sorts mate. The extreme ones like I have become...and to which I am so grateful. To those who will swear Drake is a genius. Do some comparisons between post and pre 2000 music. It’s shocking. One Direction or The Beatles? The 1975 or LED Zeppelin? Kanye West or Jimi Hendrix? Little Mix or ABBA? Drake or Prince? Justin Timberlake or Public Enemy? Ariana Grande or Kate Bush? The Yeah yeah yeahs or The Rolling Stones? Is this proving m6 lint or yours mate? I think I know and as a full time musician I think even more that I know. But its never going to provable either way. Opinions are a good thing though. Even from opinionated twats like me. You say 90% I say 93%. What’s the difference?

The song is about Marshall Vore (the drummer, they used to date). Vore was in one of Ryan Adams' bands (he went through many...) and when that group ended, it was due to, at least ostensibly, many of the members getting married and having (or getting ready to have) babies. I'd bet she went back and forth on the line when writing it as either works...just my guess

I heard she got her degree" And I said, "That makes me feel old" You said, "What does that make me?" I asked you "How is playing drums?" You said it's too much shit to carry "And what about the band?"
