I just subscribed to this site. I recently finished reading seven of Emil Cioran's books. Then I accidentally discovered Pentti Linkola. Since i'm a Finlander living in Canada and a lover of the northern bush, I immediately became interested. I just finished reading his Can Life Prevail. Today I received in the mail your Hermeneutics Of Ecological Limitation and The Later Philosophy of Pentti Linkola. I'm excited about getting into these works. I like books that inspire my own literary ditch digging, which I engage in daily.

Hey Chad, I love the fact that you brought this Finnish legend into discussion. You know, despite his radical attitude, he is still widely discussed in Finland? At least when I was in public school system here he was discussed in philosophy class as an exemplar of radical attitude towards ecology. His ideas do also make casually appearance in the public media here, and several books about him have been published within a few years, so I don't think that he is so much ignored around here as he is in other countries.

Great point- Evola noted that this is what people get wrong when they assume that production meets human needs; it's more like we artificially invent weird pseudo-needs to justify more production. But it's strange to call something with no nutritional value which only gives you kidney stones a "need"; it's more like the opposite

Pentti Linkola's positive emphasis on the efficacy of violence, echoed by you btw, might need dissecting (no pun intended)... There are ways to eliminate or greatly limit invasive non-native species without the need for senseless violence. Minks and cats for example, could be trapped and painlessly, swiftly euthanized. And also birth control laced food could be used to limit their numbers. Would it cost a bit more? Yes, very likely, but compared to the cost to the ecosystem of invasive species, that solution would be a *sane and humane, nonviolent* choice. Take a look at an interesting channel *Rebel Bass.* He recently put up a vid about John Michael Greer. I didn't agree with some of his take completely, but I think his misgivings about certain strains of eco-thought as too often tending in fascistic directions are spot-on . I would like to see a deep, informed discussion of problems we face and sane ways to address those dire problems which didn't default to your advocacy of socially reactionary, proto-fascist, facile "solutions"...Too often the "ecology" referred to in these views is thinly disguised eco-brutalism, if not outright eco-facism. I think if we are smart enough we can devise effective low-tech, ecologically sound solutions without the need to resort to fascism, suppression and violence. Using unethical means to try to extract ethical ends always ends in tragedy. Always...

Just wanted to put it out there: I'm personally under no illusion that my vegan diet is a sole action which if carried out universally throughout the population would save the planet from ecological collapse, but it is scientific consensus that a plant based diet requires a smaller area of land and simultaneously requires less water. On top of this you certainly can live healthily as a vegan if you live in an area with a wide variety of edible plants. In fact a majority of hunter gatherer tribes with the healthiest populations have been shown to eat a majority plant based diet. Two key reasons why some vegans become deficient in certain vitamins and minerals is due mainly to water sanitation (removing the bacteria that creates b12) + unvaried diets which are also common within omnivorous counterparts. Of course in many regions it is unrealistic to assume a vegan diet is possible (when living off of the local environment). Also it is simply untrue that a vegan diet puts you at any kind of a physical or athletic disadvantage. Simply look at the disproportionately small number of vegan athletes compared to the number of them doing exceedingly well within their respective sports. The scientific literature also unequivocally backs this up. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics along with many other institutions have come to the same conclusion that: not only are vegetarian and vegan diets appropriate for all stages of the life cycle (pregnancy, infancy, childhood, etc.), but they also help reduce the risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke, obesity, and ...

Vegan diet actually does more damage to the environment than a high meat diet. The data and statistics the vegans use has all been debunked. I eat an almost completely carnivore diet so as to contribute as little to environmental degradation as possible. Cattle use much less water and resources than plants and can be ranged on land that can't be cultivated. Plus a plant diet it quite difficult to do and be healthy. The vegan stuff has been debunked; look it up. Hunter gatherers ALWAYS prefer meat when it's available.

Sorry i should have mentioned that i am ex vegan myself. When i first lived in india i didnt even eat eggs and i became very malnourished. And that was before i had to do hard farming labour in tropical heat and humidity. I couldn't do it without some fish goat and water buffalo meat. I dont mind if some ppl choose to go vegan but i dont think it would work for more than a very small group of ppl and it certainly wont solve the ecological crises

@@chadahaagphilosophychannel7329 Are you saying you became malnourished *because* you were on a vegan diet or maybe do you think that you just didn't eat properly? It stands to reason that if you don't eat enough calories and you don't eat proper stuff (vitamins, other elements) then your health will deteriorate. It would happen on vegan and non-vegan diets alike. In so called "first world" vegans somehow live normal lives when they are on simple, normal vegan diets. Also, many people around the world are vegetarians (for various reasons) and they live and work fairly normally. Heck, you know this better than I do, as you live in a country whose population is approximately 30% vegetarian. They are also interesting examples of vegan bodybuilders, powerlifters, and strongmen, who don't look malnourished and seem to be able to do some hard work. Estimates of devastation that comes from animal agriculture vary, but there are some facts that are repeated in most articles I read on the subject: - it is one of the biggest source of greenhouse gases emissions, - uses much more land, water, energy than if the place was used directly to grow plant food for people, - produces much waste. Don't take it the wrong way but at the end you seem to be saying that because X is not the final solution then it is not worth doing X, even if doing X would bring a lot of positive effects in the world at large.

@fae ragan You may search for "Position of the American Dietetic Association: vegetarian diets." and read there "It is the position of the American Dietetic Association that appropriately planned vegetarian diets, including total vegetarian or vegan diets, are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. Well-planned vegetarian diets are appropriate for individuals during all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, and adolescence, and for athletes." It's cute that a PhD candidate made some comments about some vegan diet. However comments are irrelevant. What matters is data, research, meta-analyses, official stances of health organizations (such as the one linked above).

The ecofascism thing seems like a troll to me. Like, of course democracy is unecological but to effectively maintain such a state of authoritarian control would require means and methods that would be themselves be ecologically disasterous. Instead his discourse gets hijacked to rationalize identitarian power grabs in a decaying civilization.
