PHILOSOPHY - History: Aristotle on the Purpose of Life [HD]

In this video, Monte Johnson (University of California, San Diego) explores an approach to the question “What is the purpose of life?” developed by the Greek Philosopher Aristotle (384-322 BC). Aristotle reasoned that just as artificial things (such as tools and workers) have characteristic capabilities with respect to which they are judged to be good or do well, so each kind of natural thing (including plants and humans) has characteristic capabilities with respect to which can be judged, objectively, to be good or do well. For plants and animals these mostly have to do with nutrition and reproduction, and in the case of animals, pleasure and pain. For humans, these vegetative and animal capabilities are necessary but not sufficient for our flourishing. Since reason and the use of language are the unique and highest capabilities of humans, the cultivation and exercise of intellectual friendships and partnerships, moral and political virtue, scientific knowledge and (above all) theoretical philosophy, was argued by Aristotle to be the ultimate purpose of human life.

We've been created for a single purpose, and that is to worship Allah. In order for us to fulfill that purpose, Allah has built in us several tools. These tools have to be guided by the only thing that can guide, and that is the quran and the hadith. Our sense of seeing and hearing is a tool. Our tongue is a tool. Our limbs is a tool. Our desire is a tool. Our heart and intellectual reasoning is a tool. Our fitrah-or primordial nature in english, is a tool. All of these needs to be guided *The journey of human life has always been about guiding the tools that Allah has bestowed upon us. And through guiding them, a person will fully be in the state of submission or al-istislām, thus the purpose of his/her creation to worship Allah is achieved.* Not only that, He also created the perfect environment for us to guide our tools. The heaven, the earth, and everything in between is filled with signs of God. The quran is also filled with signs of God. When the two signs of God are met, it will become clear in the chest of those who have knowledge that the one who put these signs in the heaven and the earth is the same one who sent down the quran. When this conclusion has been reached-the inimitability of the quran, it is a crystal clear in the chest of those who have knowledge that: *There is no God but Allah, the holy Quran came from His side, and Muhammad is His messenger.* Every single branch of science is actually about studying the signs of God at it's core. But then somewhere in the history, the journey of seeking knowledge has forgotten it's essence and it's initial purpose. The quran is there to remind us back the essence and the initial purpose of seeking knowledge. Which is why the quran talks a lot about many heavenly bodies and a lot of things in the nature, it also talks about history of people of the past, it talks about tradition and social issue, then it connected all those things back to Allah-subhāna wa ta'āla, to remind us back that: *"Hey, you've been looking for the signs of God your entire lifetime, all of these that surrounded you are the signs of God. So would you be reminded?"* Just like there are people who have guided the tools that have been given to them, the opposite is also true. There are also people who have not guided their tools properly. And we see the clashes between the two everyday. - a fitra that has been guided will clash with a fitra that hasn't been guided. - a desire that has been guided will clash with a desire that hasn't been guided. - a sense of seeing and hearing that have been guided will clash a sense of seeing and hearing that haven't been guided. - a heart that has been guided will clash with a heart that hasn't been guided. - a set of limbs that has been guided will clash with a set of limbs that hasn't been guided. - a tongue that has been guided will clash with a tongue that hasn't been guided. - an intellectual reasoning that has been guided will clash with an intellectual reasoning that hasn't been guided. *So many things can be said for each of these tools. But i want to focus on one of the tools that we have. It's our intellectual reasoning.* The classic example for the clash between a guided intellectual reasoning with an unguided intellectual reasoning can be found at the science of Philosophy. The real essence of Philosophy is actually an intellectual reasoning is trying to reach the unseen world without the guidance of the unseen. While a guided intellectual reasoning will try to reach the unseen world with the guidance of the unseen-i.e the quran and the hadith. The both are trying exactly the same. Trying to reach and understand the unseen world. One of them with the help of guidance, and the other without the help of guidance. *There is a reason why intellectual reasoning needs to be guided by the guidance.* Intellectual reasoning will try to reach and understand everything, but it failed to question one thing. Can intellectual reasoning itself understand everything? Brain will stop developing at certain ages, meaning the capability of intellectual reasoning will also stop developing the moment the brain stops developing. In other word, there is limit to what human mind can comprehend. Philosophy will teach us how to understand everything through intellectual reasoning. But with the existence of axiom, undeniable fact that brain could not understand everything; essentially it defeated it's own purpose. Even if we follow the assumption that intellectual reasoning can understand everything-which is not true, it neccesitates an existing set of authentic information as the baseline for itself to start the logical thinking. Meaning, with no existing authentic information regarding God that can be percieved through our senses at all, it is inherently impossible for intellectual reasoning to actually comprehend the attributes of God on it's own-even if we follow the assumption that intellectual reasoning can understand everything. And since that there is no authentic information of God collected, people will make assumption about God, and eventually made that assumption as the baseline for their logical thinking. In another word, their assumptions will lead them to another assumptions and so on and so forth without actually touching the reality of God. Since they never actually touch the reality of God, this will lead them into a rabithole of unanswered questions. This is where the root of the problem lies. They have mistaken their assumption as the reality. And people who does this are circling around in one place and unable to escape from their perpetuity of confusion. Which is why the quran always criticizes people who follows their assumption without knowledge at all. Simply knowing this should tell us that Philosophy alone is not a reliable methodology to comprehend God and His attributes. There are better and more reliable methodologies which will provide us with the neccesary authentic information we needed to know and be used as the foundation for our intellectual reasoning to start to work, and ultimately comprehending the authentic attributes of God. And that is through the signs which He has scattered all over the world, through the holy book that God has sent to us-the Quran, and through the saying of the messenger of God Himself, prophet Muhammad(peace and blessing be upon him)-the hadith.

what are we doing here and where we going to go? its like we just woke up one morning and then its welcome to the show. dont ask any questions just go with the flow. make as much money as you can and try your best not to get broke. copy everything you see on the tv from the hairstyles to the clothes and dont think too often just do exactly as your told. you ever get confused then turn towards the alcohol. you still hear your thouhgts? then just turn up the radio as you learn to live a lifestyle of drugs, sex and rock n' roll. but in all honesty, i just need to know, is there more to the cycle than growing and getting older. living and dying just to leave behind happy home. and a whole lot of property that someday else is going to own. i just really need to know before the caskets closed. cause i'm not willing to gamble with my soul, nor am i ready to take any chances these are just simple life questions and i'm just searching for some answers like what are we doing here and what is our purpose how did we get here and who made us so perfect? and what happens once we go or is this world all really worth it. questions we dont answer because apparently we dont really have to. theres no purpose to this life and our existence merely natural? in that case please let me ask you. did you create yourself or was it somebody else who had fashioned you? because you're being that's impeccable faultless and unparalleled. you are a product of supreme intelligence and i'm merely being rational. for there isn't camera on this earth that can come close to the human eye nor a computer that can compete alongside the human mind. and if the whole world was to come together, we wouldnt be able to create a single fly so many signs yet we still deny. as science tries to justify that all this could come from none when it's simple sum, zero plus zero cannot possibly ever give you one. so from where did all this order come? for everything has its origins a maker a creator of its own. i mean the only reason your watching this video is because somebody had to press upload so you can believe in the Big Bang but i'd rather believe in He who caused it to explode Allah, The creator of the everything along with every single soul The Everliving, The Master, the only one who is in control unlike this creation beyond our imagination and NO, He's not a man nor has be any partners in association, He's on his own. and neither did He ever leave us alone just like any manufacture he left us with an instruction manual The Quran and islam and i'm sorry to jump to conclusions but it's the only one possible the only definition of God as the one and Only, supreme being its logical a book with zero contradictions with miracles that are both scientific and historical all revealed over 1400 years ago like the detailed description of the human embryo to the mountains as pegs holding firm the earth below and the two seas that dont mix in a complete separate flow to the planets in orbit alternating night and day as they stay in float the expansion of the universe and the creation of everything from H2O to the stories of the past and the preservation of Firaun to identify the lowest point in the land where Persian defeated Rome the gushing fluid that created man in the gland between the ribs and the backbone and not a world has changed its still the same so please explain how all this was known over 1400 years ago to a man who couldnt read or write, as he would recite what ever the angle spoke and you still dont believe please try come up with something thats even close but you cant. so we took God as mockery and his Messengers as a joke dismissed his scriptures as legends and tales of the ancient folk as we life according to our whims, desires and hopes saying this life is the only home we will ever know we will live then die and simply turn to bones YOLO correction: after the grass dies the rain arrives it re-grows and Allah promises to do the same thing to your every soul and bring you back from your very fingertips to your toes as the all Seeing Supreme Being watches us so close as we are surely being tested in our wealth, our health, our self and everything that we've been blessed with so believe for we will surely be resurrected and be brought back to Lord in account for every single deed as he hands us our books and order us to "READ" from the bad to the good and everything in between you, yourself are sufficient for you own accountability so dont be mad at me, YOU WERE THE ONE WHO THOUGHT HE WOULDNT COME BACK TO ME i gave you a whole life long to search after me but you were so busy chasing all that which was temporary so read and glad tidings to all those who believed. but if you disbelieve, READ and dont let that day be the first day you find out what your life really means READ!

Philosophy is more a means to our "highest and most godlike capabilities", rather than an end in itself. Philosophy is a means to consider possibilities, and explore the capacities and function of the human being, but the END within that process is revelation, and understanding. We are in pursuit of absolute and unalterable Truth, which is the information In Formation, and only when we come to embody this truth so fully that the pursuit is no longer necessary, and our Being, through word and deed is indistinguishable from the creative force and organization behind all being, can we be said to have reached our "highest and most godlike capabilities." Philosophy is one of many Vehicles on the road toward that level of understanding, but I don't think it is the destination.

Cool. Aristotle beautifully describes how functionality works in regards to the possibilities given by the traits of a defined being. But the traits and their functionality are not what we would call the *existence* of the object and thus the purpose of the traits of the being does not simultaneously explain the purpose of the existence of that being. Their functionality explains what their (the abilities, traits) purpose is, but not what the purpose of life as such is. Thus in order to "life" as such to have a purpose, there should be something that existence as existence accomplishes or serves by an ability of its own, by a possibility of its own nature, fulfilling something else, something outside itself. Saying that the purpose of existence is existence as an end in itself would not satisfy the criteria we saw in regards to functionality in other cases, where the purpose of an X must be something outside X, something else, something *for which* X is. A purpose of X should be something that explains X in reference to its function (or aim) to accomplish Y. Just as the possibility for the sake of possibility without this possibility actualizing something other then itself (being actually the possibility of *something*), is the very definition of futile and empty, so is reproduction for the sake of reproduction, or life as such is actually without a purpose or function of its own.

Hyπατία I agree with the majority of your point. In fact, I was thinking along the same lines of that it is insufficient to say that because humans are superior to other beings in certain regards (I think a more accurate word is differentiated, because other beings are superior to humans in some regards .. but i digress), that humans must exist to exercise these superior faculties .. the question then rises “to what end?” The one way in which I somewhat differ in opinion with you, is that the purpose does not need to be external to the human, for example, the theory of reincarnation proposes that we have always been, and will always be, that we come to this 3D world to relearn what we already know, achieve spiritual growth .. etc. I obviously have no idea .. but was curious if you have any thoughts on the matter.

Should be said that philosophy in the ancient world encompassed pretty much every possible area of human inquiry, from metaphysics, ethics and aesthetics, to mathematics, physics and biology, and Aristotle worked in all of these areas. So if you're doing science, then you're exercising your ability to reason, and thereby doing philosophy (from Aristotle's point of view).

Because Aristotle wanted to know be "happy." (Which is frankly why we do anything.) Aristotle came to believe that discovering -- and then acting in accord with -- the true meaning of ("endpoint," "endgame," or "goal" of any human life) brings a deeper satisfaction than anything else. His teacher Plato philosophized for this reason. Plato's teacher Socrates philosophized for this reason. People calling themselves the "experts" ("sophists") kept pummeling the -- pretty banal, pretty self-evident -- point that individuals have different tastes. And that different cultures do things "differently." From this the sophists had inferred that "man is the measure of all things." A war veteran, Socrates begged to differ. He knew others disagreed with him. He felt his culture was better than others in some way, and worse in other ways. Because he'd withstood the enemy when others fled. He knew some men brave, and others routinely cowardly, or lacking in character. Some were generous, others stingy. Some were honest, others treacherous. Some were hospitable, others unwelcoming. Some flippant, others serious. Some joyful, others stoned. Some reasonably self-controlled, and others out of control. And this, regardless of personal "tastes," or what culture you come from. People admire the same qualities. Finding out what they are -- and then acting on them toward the goal of all human life required loving the "knowledge" about these things; a.k.a., wisdom. And philosophy in Greek means literally "love of wisdom. ;)

Hmm, I think saying we do everything because we want to be "happy" is a little too simplistic. Is the appreciation you feel while looking at a great piece of artwork best characterized as "happy"? I think we do things because we want to make life better, richer more fulfilling, more exciting, happier, more tolerant, kinder, more beautiful, etc. and I feel like lumping all these different amazing human experiences into just the one word "happy" is misleading.

@@khalidnezami5056Depends what your looking for at that stage of your life. I have a useless degree in philosophy and politics on the way. Do I give a shit? Nah not really. Why did I chose to do them? Because I enjoy them and they provide me with guidance at a stage in my life where I dont know what to do with myself. Education is different from training. You could do a more practical degree that would train you and prepare you for a long and reliable career, sure. But it might not necessarily fulfill you, which we gotta remember is the goal of the game. If your unsure about your future or the world and want to know more, Philosophy is one of those subjects thats perfect in your early years. It leaves you with a better grasp on things and prepares you to navigate the practical world. Its seen as a joke subject by many because they cant be arsed (or are too spooked) to use their brain. But the fact is that there is a reason why the term PhD = doctorate of philosophy.

Enjoyable lecture :-) thank you for sharing. I'm not exactly sure why it's struck me as a bit of a distractor at the end when you said that I had learned something because you taught me which is true. I find it easier and maybe less prideful when a teacher might use the phrase that we had learned something together instead of pointing out that I should be thankful to you directly. Anyway really did enjoy what you presented :-) I appreciate your work and Aristotle's and all those in between :-)

One problem. Our use of reason according to theory and so I claim was meant to increase our overall survival. This is seen as evident by our pain and pleasure or our survival motivators being in the driver seat. However this video brings up a good point. Why then do we sometimes disobey our pleasure and pain in accordance with our reason. The answer is we dont. We simply feel pleasure to be right and gain knowledge and use reason that overpowers our already set pleasure and pain. And sometimes it's not enough which is evident in people who eat junk food with the knowledge that it's bad for them.

The purpose of life is plain and simple. Do not overthink this. The odds of being born are 1 in 400,000,000,000,000 . We are given the gift to experience life. We grow, we experience, we learn, we construct, we solve. There is nothing we cannot do. Our brains are limitless. And so the purpose of life is to fabricate it as we desire.

Agree and would like to add that Purpose of life is known and its way beyond oneself living to please their lusts or whatever nature of life goes and serves better who gets to know that point,i noticed most of people of all kind of levels dont actually know what they want from life and why do they want it ?! She want that dress so she wouldnt look less than her friends he want that car or jab so people commend them all what most desire got to do with others or want to get or build something based on others to point that being self sufficient is considered weird although i like to have everygood things that life could offer but iwant it by my own work and from my own skills and i know why i want it see that makes me so comfortable in my skin knowing my happiness is in my hands i hardly go in bad mood shall i argued with other weather they mean or dont means thing to me unlike the most i seen , its all about that high purpose if it is good and a person is aware nothing destroy you or make you but yourself and if you got everything but dont know what is your highest purpose in life you can lose yourself and everything that values easily. As long as one person dont know what they want from life and why they want it and weather it serves positively your highest purpose well being to choose or not to reject see no philosophy or holly book can get a person out of that maze called life safe or as a winner .we do exist to serve that purporse originally shall a person lost it or its way their being or whatever they become or gain is absolutely useless matters serves only their life routin .i do highly believe who doesnt do well in their relationship with creator got no good for no body only an idiot or a damned would have want to got anything to do with that type .that the problem is the people influence on oneself they cant influences a person who know and determin to keep that high purpose intact they can only influence empty heads and easily drag them down a lone to the of hell matrix . Its all about that purpose and nothing less matters i havent lived for ages to get it i just observed and studied and selectd before i but my self in any situation so far and thankfully i dont have any lies to regrets or losses to grieve just waking up with myself is all whats in my mind & no appointments with a doctor or no one really caught my interest or influenced me to point that i would give them 1 minute of my time of day proves to me iam right everyday & okay .its a really grace that oneself happiness comes from within because only myself can make me feel good or bad not a lover or afriend ...etc and that i noticed is rare lolz ,😂😂😂😂😂😂 whoes gone be burried in same grave with me but myself to give them any importance to point that they influence me that much anyway?!!.low self steam is a disaster indeed .

Isn't Aristotle's view of moral habituation a little like what the early behaviorists believed? That is, it's not innate character that matters but finding oneself in the right environment. And that right environment is the responsibility of the state/government. Thus Steven Pinker classed such behaviorists as Maoists in that they thought that the state, or institutions, could and should mold character and therefore behavior. In other words, is this a recipe for totalitarianism (which is often a criticism aimed at Plato's politics rather than Aristotle's)?

Sperm whales have displayed their means of communication as being far more advanced than ours. Yet we still decide to slaughter them and use them as food. I even find myself becoming conveluted in my thoughts and theories about our existence. Its crazy to think how simple our drive to persevere , overcome, adapt, learn is. How it's observable throughout the whole animal kingdom, even for the different species that only have nerve knots for brains.
