Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige Review

Jon shares his verdict on the 9900 Prestige.
A top of the line smart toothbrush, the 9900 introduces SenseIQ technology, the new A3 Premium All-in-One brush head and offline tracking.
The 9900 is designed to be simpler to use, but more powerful for you, in building better oral care habits. It comes at a price though.

    I'm actually very glad they didn't include the cable attached: no frayed cables that require full replacement of the case, and I can use my USB-C to C cable instead of a USB-A one. It might have been nice to have a compartment for a cable though. My biggest gripe is that it only has storage for 1 head.

    Sonicare releases the DiamondClean Smart and Oral b releases the Genius X to battle Sonicare. Then Oral b releases the io and Sonicare releases the Prestige 9900 to battle Oral b. It's like I'm watching a battle between Intel and AMD regarding CPUs or a battle between Apple and Samsung regarding Smartphones.

    Great video!!! I have a question. Due to limited budget, I am hesitating between the diamond classic line and 9300, 9400, 9500. However, only the 9500 has pressure sensor function if Im not wrong. Is it a very crucial function? I have sensitive teeth and tend to press the brush hard at times. Please help.

  • @ElectricTeeth

    @ElectricTeeth

    3 жыл бұрын

    A pressure sensor is useful, but it is not essential. If you know you brush too hard you just need to adapt your technique. Of course those brushes with a pressure sensor will alert you. If you are on a budget, you may want to consider other brushes. You are looking at premium models that are expensive. There are much more affordable models that offer pressure sensor and other key features. You could look at the Sonicare ProtectiveClean 4100/4300 (subject to your location) or if you want a smart toothbrush on a budget, you might want to consider the Oclean X Pro Elite.

    Excellent video, I was looking for information on this toothbrush. Now I am undecided to buy the 9700 or 9900 😂🙄. Greetings.

    Hi Jose. Great question. You can happily use just 1 brush head. You can use the A3 brush head to clean the tongue. Or invest in a tongue scraper. As to whether you get the DiamondClean Smart (DCS) 9700 or the Prestige 9900 its a tricky one. Technically I think the 9900 is better. But the 9700 my well be more cost effective. There is little between them, so really pick the one that stands out to you and just make sure you use it correctly.

    Great review both here and the written one. However I do have several issues with this new model. First, the price is just ludicrous...it’s just a toothbrush! Second, I don’t like that the cleaning modes can only be changed from the app. It’s just an extra step and extra time. Currently I have a sensitive gum area that I need to switch between sensitive and standard mode. Third, I really wish sonicare would have taken a step from oral b with their adaptive learning. If you don’t follow their exact brushing sequence, it leaves gaps in the charting. To me that’s dumb. And they don’t even chart the biting surface...even dumber. All the other innovations are great such as one brush head. Although I would like to still see a sensitive one. One question, can you use the older brush heads on the 9900? Thanks for the fantastic and thorough review.

  • @ElectricTeeth

    @ElectricTeeth

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the kind words Gary. Yes the price is high. But many top of the line smart toothbrushes now are. The Oral-B iO is pricey too. Do they need to be this expensive? No. I hear you on changing the cleaning modes. I initially thought (before going hands on) that you would be able to change the modes from the handle. It definitely won't be something that everyone agrees on. I can see both sides of the reason behind this. Perhaps a step too far in simplifying the daily use?! In your particular instance might reducing the brushing intensity (controlled from the handle) be an option? As with the charting in the app this is something I noticed. I don't know what the best solution really is. Sonicare's method enforces a repetitive approach to brushing. The lack of recording of biting surfaces is something I have fed back on and they acknowledge this is an area for potential improvement. I believe the brush is able to track it, the software needs configuring so. And yes, the other brush heads will work on the Prestige brush handle. Just be aware you won't get the mode pairing.

    You have to follow the pattern set by Sonicare. If you are brushing the upper rear, but the app wants you to brush the lower front, then it won't mark the upper rear as brushed within the app. Presently it only tracks the inside and outside surfaces, so it can tell the difference between these. Jon, you don’t state whether the case itself contains a battery. I’m assuming it doesn’t. A charging port is a nice option but an internal battery would be significantly better. Yes, I realize there would be yet further increased cost and yes, adding components adds additional points of failure, from an engineering perspective. Even so… I’d never experienced a case with this design until I recently purchased a pair of Bose QC earbuds. They are brilliant. I occasionally plug in their case and each time I return the earbuds to their case they recharge, plugged in or not. Before getting these earbuds I wouldn’t have placed much value on this design unless the device was out in the world, away from a handy electrical outlet. Now, having used it for several months, I love it! As an added benefit, for those who travel extensively, it would effectively double the battery life (or, alternatively, I suppose, allow the brush handle design to be much smaller as it would recharge every time you placed it back in it’s case.) This sort of option was less viable back in the days when rechargeable batteries developed “memory”, but modern day, lithium ion batteries prefer to be kept well charged anyway. Just a thought. Great review!

    What is the best brush for smart brushing features for technique?

  • @ElectricTeeth

    @ElectricTeeth

    2 жыл бұрын

    This is the best 'smart' toothbrush in my opinion. For technique, both Sonicare and Oral-B have tips etc given by their app, but I can't say one is really better than the other as each have their pros and cons. In truth, mastering the correct technique comes down to you holding and moving the brush correctly more than the app.

  • @ElectricTeeth

    It isn't quite as black and white as that. The evidence would suggest round brushes clean better, but more research is needed to say conclusively. Technique, brushing time and frequency all have a part to play. We only recommend this as the best if you want all the features. Our top best overall/value choices have round brush heads. 👍

    Great video. I’m trying to convince myself to get a Sonicare 9900. The biggest selling point is actually the usb-c charging case. The fact that it doesn’t have a usb-a cable built in means that I can just use my existing usb-c cable charging system that I take with me on every trip. My oral-b’s proprietary charger is atrocious on the other hand.

    Which one is a better buy diamond clean 9700 or 9900 prestige

  • @ElectricTeeth

    @ElectricTeeth

    3 жыл бұрын

    I will be creating detailed comparisons of the Prestige vs Sonicare DiamondClean Smart (DCS) 9700 in the coming weeks. The short answer is yes, I do think the Prestige is better. It is the ‘Ultimate Smart Toothbrush’ available today. But….. Both clean the teeth well. If you already own one, it is not worth switching. Defining what is better is not easy and everyone has opinions on what is better and why. The differences between them are relatively small. The A3 brush head included with the Prestige is great, but this can be purchased separately and fitted to the DCS. The 9900 Prestige has some simplification to it and encourages a much better routine/habits. That said, it may well be possible to pick the older DCS up for less money. If the difference was $50 or more, I would opt for the DCS and save the cash.

    I will be creating detailed comparisons of the Prestige vs the Oral-B iO and Sonicare DiamondClean Smart (DCS) in the coming weeks. The short answer is yes, I do think the Prestige is better. It is the ‘Ultimate Smart Toothbrush’ available today. But….. All 3 clean the teeth well. If you already own one, it is not worth switching. Defining what is better is not easy and everyone has opinions on what is better and why. The differences between them are relatively small, particularly with the DCS. The 9900 Prestige has some simplification to it and encourages a much better routine/habits. That said, it may well be possible to pick the older DCS up for less money. If the difference was $50 or more, I would opt for the DCS and save the cash. As much as I like the iO, the battery life, and more enforced routine on the Prestige are more appealing. The travel case is also more practical. If you want to know more, just ask.

    @@ElectricTeeth I am making my first purchase of an electric toothbrush but can't decide between the DCS and the Prestige. I just really like the case of the Prestige. It's smaller and seems better for travel. What are your thoughts regarding this? Also, for someone who has never used an electric toothbrush do you see any advantage to getting the Prestige over the DCS? The cup charging method also seems nice in theory but the newer charging stand just seems more practical. The A3 brush heads are also much cheaper than most others on the website. Any Ideas as to why that is? Your videos have helped so much!

  • @ElectricTeeth

    @ElectricTeeth

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Perry. Simply put for your first electric toothbrush you don't need a brush this capable or expensive. If you want to opt for the very best, then by all means go for it. I would pick the Prestige over the DCS. But, the DCS might be cheaper (depends when & where you buy it) so that can have an impact. If there is a reasonable saving to be had, go with DCS. The Prestige case is smaller, but bear in mind you have to carry the charging cable separately, whereas it is built-in with the DCS. From a cleaning point of view, there is no real advantage to go for the Prestige over the DCS. In fact, even the more entry level ProetectiveClean 4100 cleans as well and that is a fraction of the price. The A3 brush head can be fitted to almost all Sonicare handles. So you can get the benefits of this brush head on almost all Sonicare toothbrushes. It can be fitted to the DCS for example. As for the price o the brush heads, I am not sure. Prices always change so tricky one to answer.
