Philippines heatwave: Schools close amid scorching weather

The Philippines is sweltering in a heatwave that’s forecast to last for a few more weeks - with temperatures rising even higher.
Thousands of schools have suspended in-person classes and are now teaching online.
It’s prompted concern that the quality of education, already one of the worst in the world, could further deteriorate.
Al Jazeera’s Barnaby Lo reports from Manila, the Philippines.

@@darylp9306Hindi ngayong summer ang start. August to May ang school calendar ngayon.

Old Academic Calendar fits perfect to the climate of the Philippines. The Philippines doesn't need to follow the academic calendar of first world countries in order for the children to have a world-class education. The REASON WHY WESTERN COUNTRIES have SUMMER VACATION starting from the month of JUNE is because SUMMER SEASON in their countries STARTS in the month of JUNE. MEANWHILE, in the PHILIPPINES, SUMMER starts in the month of MARCH. So, the summer vacation must start in the month of March and not in June.

The problem of putting aircondition systems in all public classrooms as some suggested is that it will increase the load of the Philippine power grid. There are already reports now of the power grids having problems due to high demand and some of them had already shutdown. The Department of Energy said today the Philippine power grid is already at calamity level. So imagine if all the schools in the country started using ACs eventually it will be causing more blackouts as grids gave up.

The typhoons do kill lots of trees. We have decades and century old trees which died during the recent typhoons like Typhoon Odette. Also, the heat is too bad when same old trees just shrivel up and die no matter how much you water them to compensate for not having rains. I don't even live in a very urban setting. It's a city but looks more like a far off town. 😅 It's Sipalay City and it's pretty rural here. It's also smack dab beside the sea so the humidity and heat is just too much.

Indeed! global warming is here. We all need to prepare! And one more thing that is scary about this is that now, many Asian countries are in heat wave such as the Philippines but when the summer is over, flood is very widespread. Again, preparation is the key! What i love about the report is that even though the country is poor and the education is low as mentioned. Filipinos are exceptionally great at speaking the English language. Try going to Thailand or Vietnam and you will have a hard time with communication because of the lack of English speakers.

It will get worse each year not only Philippines but worldwide. This is due to climate change some of the countries in 30-40 years from now will be no longer livable due to extreme heat and ice mass is melting billion tons each year adding to sea level rise and in this case some countries will lose land areas. We need to start caring the environment. 💚
