I went to see Philip live a few years ago here in Newcastle in the U.K.. It looked like he had been badly let down by his promoter that night as the advertising for Philip’s gig only seemed to appear a week or two before the show. There were also four other competing gigs involving major artists happening in the city that night. This sadly but almost inevitably resulted in Philip’s audience being small, literally about 15 people!. To compound this, Philip was also sharing the venue that night with a ‘then popular’ UK talent show semi-finalist singer who was performing in the larger adjacent hall and whose sound was badly bleeding into Philip’s room! I had already been a long time follower and fan of Philip’s since his days playing with Melissa Etheridge, after the gig that night I came away not only as an even bigger fan of Philip’s guitar playing and musical talent but as a massive fan of Philip as a man and human being. He came onto stage that night and played to an audience of 15 like it was an audience of 30,000 he was so nice and engaging to everyone in the room, frequently walking out into the audience, standing with people and playing for them. He made light of, and laughed off the sound bleeding through from the other gig. Philip will probably never forget this gig for all of the wrong reasons, I will never forget this gig for all of the right reasons, namely his awesome musical talent, humility, sense of humour and total and utter professionalism. Philip Sayce is a total class act both as a musician and as a human being, I’m a fan for life! Great video Nik.

"One of those (guitars) when everyone turns around and says, 'What is that guitar," Sayce says of the Strat as he played it in music store. I suspect his amazing playing also had something to do with turning heads. :)

Great to see Phil talking about his main squeezes. The first time I recall seeing and hearing that sunburst strat was at my house. Bob brought it over and Phil played it through my 1966 Deluxe Reverb and it did sound incredible. He had it cranked through my Deluxe and I was simultaneously thinking how great it sounded in Phil's hands and what my neighbours were thinking with the volume! That Deluxe ( nicknamed The Beast) was unusually loud for a 22 watt amp.

THE RIFF W NIK SEVIGNY, which fuzz pedal gets close to philip sayce fuzz tone without using the OX fuzz what else can you use? Is the Dumble tone means just a very clean booster pedal or using a treble boost pedal? 6:12 I'll never again worry about the action on one of my strats, I keep trying to lower it by readjusting the truss rod, then lowering the saddles. I can get it a bit lower, but string bending beyond the 12th fret causes choking off the note. What makes it worse is having a 'floating' trem, as the bridge plate is lifted off the body, making the action (to me) quite high.
