Phil Swift (HEMA) vs Wilson Humphries (Kendo) 2

Since our first video was such a hit, we decided to give the viewers more.
PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT WE ARE NOT TRYING TO PROMOTE ONE STYLE OVER THE OTHER, or suggest that one can beat the other. We are simply trying to promote all sword disciplines, and we believe that cross-training can only strengthen one's skills and knowledge.
This is just two friends having a friendly exchange. For our third video we would like to have a match with steel , perhaps even Rapier and Dagger vs Katana and Wakizashi. However, fencing safe versions for Katanas are quite expensive, Please help us crowdfund for our third video!

@@islamicschoolofmemestudies it's a direct reference to Musashi Miyamoto's duel against Sasaki Kojiro, who he defeated with a long wooden sword. Sasaki Kojiro used a sword of notable length, so presumably in an attempt to equal out the differences in reach, Musashi used a long wooden sword rather than his own shorter sword. Musashi defeated Sasaki by cracking him in the head and ribs. Over time, just like with all oral history, the story of the fight took on a legendary form, and details such as Musashi Miyamoto carving his weapon out of an oar while on his way to the island were included into the story. Most details of the fight are obscure and uncertain, what is known that Musashi defeated Sasaki, and most accounts seem to agree that he did so with a wooden sword.

I get that it might not be avoidable, but I feel like the weapon choice doesn't really do European or Japanese swordsmanship justice here. The Red Dragon is a decent approximation of the weight and balance of some longswords, but the floppy crossguard and awkward reaction to the bind distort the way the weapon is supposed to be used. Likewise, the Shinai is much longer, lighter and straighter than Japanese swords tend to be, turning an agile close-range cutter into a longer-range sniping/tapping weapon. Props to the Kendo guy for not basing his whole strategy around running away and hand sniping, since he absolutely could do that in this matchup and be almost unbeatable. But even as is he has the reach and agility to shut down a lot of the Fiore guy's mid plays without having to really engage with them, and I think that makes the fights a little less interesting than they could be.

in my opinion the big disadvantage is the handle on the red dragon plastic, its very short thus with gloves its hard to cross your hands and you have little leverage, making it very difficult to strike its about 20cm. @@Coldpl4y3R Nah, they'd be OK. They're pros! Wear the best protective gear and remind everyone that it's friendly sparring. I'm aware longsword type weapons are one of the best ways to get hurt in HEMA etc. If we could clone them, and use real swords - in the name of Science! That'd settle this debate lolz As with all dangerous sports like football and soccer, first-aid should be standing by. Professionals are always preferably. I played football, one of the most dangerous sports on earth. The ambulance was waiting to take kids off the field to the hospital, man. I saw a few friends and other team people go that route, all messed up - one of whom injured as revenge for a comrade... I made it out unscathed, but it was the most dangerous activity I've ever done. Not Karate, not any kind of fencing (including a lot with Kendo, Kenjutsu, and Iadio people - before I learned anything of them), not the shooting of guns and wearing one all day, nor shooting Uzis and such at a birthday party with a bunch of us 9 or 11 year old kids - blasting Barney and Barbies to oblivion. Nope, it was football I said all that to say this. HEMA is a looot safer than football (American, to y'all across the Pond!). I think safely blunted steel swords in the hands of these 2 clearly skilled, respectful, and fully controlled people, would still be less risky than what I grew up watching the NFL do - and did in high school Just my opinion. Also, even if people were harmed, would that make it any less great of sparring, from the purely martial view? And as always, safety first. Pain and discomfort are OK, injury and damage are not. Beyond not being able to train, it's just not cool. I'd rather get hurt, than accidentally hurt my sparring partner. I've sparred with things more dangerous than these guys are using, for several hours, in a confined space with random objects, with only an Amateur skill level for both of us (not Beginners or Noobz) - instead of these Professionals or Experts (who am I to judge?) in this video. No injuries! So no, I don't want anyone to get hurt :) I do think it's possible to make one's self so safe that they are not combat or training effective. I know there's sword safety rules and ones for Melee in general. I'm a gun guy, and these are the "big boy" rules that I use - only for those who have earned them: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mp58u7t9g6_Snqg.html&t

If you are starting out rewatch and pay close attention to the stances, changing guards and footwork. When you change your guard you are still controling the center. I really was impressed when the longsword kept up with Kendos rapid striking. Kendo keeps things simple and highly effective. The longsword has many advantages however!!! For example its ability to protect the hands or cut in two directions or even blook with the edge.

Excellent use of the low guard. This position is like holding your sword under water ready to sweep up. Very good for keeping yourself loose and ready. I noticed that as the fight went on I thought the match went to Phil. Although I thought Wilson was solid and came out leading. That often happens in a match. The one that starts well can be cleaned up in the end....

I train German longsword (PvD), which is very Winden-heavy. I like doing a lot from the bind. When I faced a Kendo guy once, it was simply impossible to do any technique from the bind because of the Shinai, that was pretty annoying. Another thing I noticed fencing against Kendoka is that they have trouble moving away from their competition-minded attitude when fencing, favouring the score over being safe and not being hit. In the best case (for them), those moves resulted in a double hit (often more damaging for them than for me: he hit my wrist, I stabbed his throat). Worst case, they'd just impale themselves with my point in Langort. Still, Kendoka can really keep you on your toes. Really recommend to everybody to try sparring with one if they get the chance (same goes for sparring with olympic style sports fencers)

it's also worth noting how a lot of kendo strikes in the follow up of a clash would have questionable edge alignment if they were using an actual katana.

It's a touch sport fighting system, so yeah there's all kinds of questionable adaptations to work the ruleset. Throw both combatants into real combat with sharp blades and armor circa 1300-1400 and it looks radically different.

Hey man love this vid! Just a suggestion, maybe making edits for when a touch is made would make this video easier to watch and understand! I practice HEMA! But unfortunately it’s hard to follow what happens in the video. You illustrating the hits through pats does wonders though. Edit watching through the whole thing it’s way more obvious in the later bouts, especially with the chest cam shots

That was an awesome video to watch. While I'm not an expert, I did notice that the kendo practitioner seemed to keep wonderful control over the center line. It seemed that every time Swift moved in for a straight forward attack, that shinai was right there in his face, threatening him with a short cut to the face. I'm sure there's a variety of techniques, but Kendo by what I've seen seems to focus on that down the middle slash while remaining in the same position where Hema will go for various angles and switch their blade position frequently. Basically, HEMA looks far more varied to me, but Kendo's simplicity has an effectiveness that spoke for itself.

  • @spikem5950

    @spikem5950

    2 жыл бұрын

The main issue with Kendo's simplicity and effectiveness is that it's designed specifically for sport and competition, and really only with the shinai. In reality Kendo's moveset is not made with the katana in mind like Kenjutsu is, and if they were using real steel swords Kendo would never have proper edge alignment. HEMA on the other hand is more like Kenjutsu, it's using techniques and method for live warfare with the weapons of war of its period in mind. No hate towards Kendo, I think it's a great discipline and respect its practitioners, but it doesn't feel like an equivalent to HEMA. More akin to modern-day foil fencing imo. I think Kenjutsu would be a much better MA to match up against HEMA.

@@spikem5950 I agree with most of what you said, although in terms of edge alignment, you must have it correctly to score in kendo(denoted by the string on top of the shinai). Furthermore, in kendo you do train with bokken, which are analogous to the length of a katana, however you don't spare with them and instead stick to kata.

Would more sweeping/arc or flowing actions with wide cuts perhaps be more effective against a Kendoka as opposed to half-cut motions? Maybe something out of Meyer's playbook? Though I read somewhere that Kendo was meant to counter against wider striking patterns? It seems that the HEMA guy is a bit sluggish relative to the Kendoka bombarding the HEMA guy with rapid fire snapping strikes.

Eh. Ikkyu is the grade you get with about 3 months of training full time (or less). I feel like a fairer fight would have to be against someone 2 dan or above. Kendokas at even higher levels are absolutely nuts. This guy isn't taking advantage of having free control of the center at all. Never goes for tsuki and strikes are far too slow.
