To be devils advocate, they are just following the rest of the demonic industry. All publishers invested too much during the pandemic and now they are burning money. And because unregulated capitalism is pure evil, shareholders is all that matters and they need to close and fire people to keep line going up. every big publisher has done it this year, and it will continue next year. The buyout the past 5 years is the worst thing that has happened to the industry. The best thing that can happen is the EU and others finally regulating this amoral industry and limiting the powers of publishers, protecting consumers and breaking up monopolies. But our politicians are old boomers and don't understand how it all works, which is how the demon CEO's get away with everything.

So let me get this straight, Tango made one of the most highly acclaimed Xbox games of last year and Microsoft instead of giving them more projects and funds, decided to shut them down? Microsoft is indeed run by detached morons who don’t know what their fanbase wants. Modern Xbox is the definition of “money can’t buy class”. They can spend all the money they want but they are incapable of nurturing and supporting talented studios. All that billions went to the top execs of BGS and Activision-Blizzard. The game studios responsible for the publisher’s success, in return, got a big ol axe to the face. Phil Spencer is the second worst thing that happened to Microsoft after Don Matrick.

Yeah, that's just stupid ... but it's sadly because despite of all that 343 makes them more money, because people continue to throw their money at their not even half backed games ... more people need to finally realize that they have to vote with their wallet, resisting the urge of short turn gratification in buying or even pre-ordering the newest games just because they are used to, because it's the right thing to do for the industry regarding its long term perspective.

Maybe his choice was to either force them to make a certain game or close them, because of pressure from the top or share holders (while giving them creative freedom wasn't an allowed option) ... if those were the only options (which actually is very likely looking at the reality of the industry), which he was allowed to choose between, he absolutely was acting true to his word and chose the least worse of two evils: "Rather close them, to force them to do something they don't want to." That literally is true to his word.

It's clear what the true intentions are. In all fairness, Redfall was pretty bad, but it's not like the developers even wanted to make that game, it was just Microsoft's "encouragement."

As long as people continue to buy the big brands more than actually creative games, we will continue to get them delivered alike. It's as simple as that. The ones to blame are the people who vote with their wallet against creativity. People like Phil Spencer are effectively powerless to do the right thing even if they wanted to, if the wallet voting crowed are saying one thing with words and a completely different thing with their wallets. As you already said correctly: Actions speak louder than words. All this complaining of us is useless, as long as gamers continue to support toxic business practices with their spending power. That's the only thing which actually can change the course of this industry, where nearly everyone has to answer to their shareholders and thus follow where the money goes. If they disobey the money, they just get replaced by someone who is obedient and business continues as usual. The ones to blame are the masses of brainrotted consumers. EDIT: Oh and blame the people who actually buy and Invest in stocks. They and the entire concept/existence of the stock market is the reason this toxic enslavement like relationship (enslaved to the dictatorship of money) come to be in the first place. Stock market trading should be universally abolished There are morally and sustainably much better and still good enough performing alternatives. But people are greedy, and so they won't accept a morally good solution, if another one makes more profit. That's the root of all evil in our modern society regarding creative freedom vs "good" business. If you continue to buy objectively anti consumer designed AAA games, buy microtransactions and invest in stocks, you are the one to blame. If you don't, I applaude you and I hope more people will do so too in the future.

Meanwhile to hammer home how evil he is, he increases his own salary an bonuses, despite a small reduction in his salary could singlehandedly fund both studios for over a year. If a company lacks profits, CEO's should be forced by law to lower their pay, they cannot be trusted as tyrants managing their own income.

They are all terrible in their own ways. I will say that, despite hating modern Nintendo myself, they seem to support their developers and not throw them under the bus. They also lead with confidence with their IP. Sony and MS seem to be struggling to try chase new business models and blow up profit margins whilst throwing their fans and legacy IP in the trash.

It was so they could look good to investors and bolster their Game Pass catalog. That's it. Now, that would be fine, but the problem is we all know Microsoft's vision for their Xbox platform (or rather Game Pass because let's be honest with ourselves and say that Game Pass is the only thing carrying Xbox right now). They're going more towards the "Netflix route" which is buy up and fund as many projects as possible to have as many things in their service as possible, preferrably AAA productions with sizeable budgets. This way, they would draw a lot of people to cheap access to many games and it gets eyes from big investors. Unfortunately, what this does is that it makes Games Pass just a glorified Walmart bargain bin for games. Instead of having a few very strong, high quality, generation-defining products in their lineup, they would rather have a large pool of mediocre slop bloating their catalog. They could do the former and fund a lot of experimental indie games. But gamers aren't largely demanding indie titles and that doesn't get as much attention from investors. Add this on top of the fact that Microsoft can't publish games to save their lives, then you end up where we are today. I don't care if people disagree with me on this. I am a firm believer that Microsoft is one of the WORST gaming publishers in the entire industry. And that was way before this was happening. The only difference is they aren't as controversial as EA and Ubisoft. Microsoft/Xbox Games Studios is HILARIOUSLY incompetent. Seriously, this is the same studio that ran Halo and Gears of War into the ground, both of which used to be literal TITANS of the shooter genre. Yeah, lets give those same morons CoD. They totally won't make it worse than it already is.

We'll never get games like Hi-Fi Rush 2 or The Evil Within 3. I loved most of those studios' games. If Hellblade 2 doesn't do much better than Hi-Fi Rush, I'm worried that Microsoft is going to give a new meaning to Senua's Sacrifice. ☠️ God help Double Fine. Might let them live because of Grounded but I want another game like Psychonauts 2.

Big publisher doing big publisher things. A timeless classic that never fails to disappoint. It is really sad that gaming has become mainstream as a result of which you find the big players now prioritizing money over value. Sadly, the cycle must continue until developers & gamers realize that they need to find alternatives in order to preserve this piece of art from the endless corporate greed that is trying to completely consume it. The good thing is that we are already at the point where we are doing so. It's really great to see how in recent years indie titles, small studios, niche genres, etc. have enjoyed more success to the point where some have even reached AAA heights of success whilst you find big publishers not enjoying that level of success with their newer titles thereby being forced to close down genuinely good studios. It will take time but hopefully we will eventually reach there. Events like the recent Helldivers debacle make me realize that all hope is not lost, that despite having an insane stranglehold over the market these companies still have to bend down on that one instance where we come together. Remember guys, vote with your wallet! :)

@@CaptainMetallica80s They didn't make Dishonored, that's Arkane Lyon, which is currently working on that Marvels Blade Game. Arkane Austin was making Prey and recently Redfall, they lost a lot of talented devs because of Redfall, so it was always hard to see them recover from that. Still i had some hope they might make it and go back to great singleplayer games, but i guess that hope is lost now...

Microsoft should be focusing in having a pipeline of good games instead of shutting studios down. Otherwise whats the value of GamePass? Just a bunch of old games which can be bought for cheap in a sale? Sorry but i already have a Steam account. The games they can put out don't have to be "AAAA" Blockbusters all the time, some of the most popular games are AA in recent time made by a few people on a low budget. Some people in those studios can make games like this and can make sure that there are more new game releases for Gamepass more often. Their IP harvesting with all their aquisitions means nothing if they don't have the studios to actually do something with them and it only means there are less games people would like to see if they just keep shutting them down and fire everyone or rush out the few games which they actually have somewhat ready for release.

All I'm seeing are two studio's worth of talented devs looking to move to PC so they can now publish for themselves with no strings atteched. The lesson is that if you had a publisher or they approached you, you didn't need a publisher in the first place.
