Other chip shots were good quality ones (may not be right distance depending on lie but never chunk/blade).

I come back to watch this every couple of weeks. Learn this and even as you're starting to get better, you'll see that with this technique, even the bladed/duffed shots will be much better. The one thing I would suggest/add is that it's easier to start with this technique and less loft. I play a 50 degree for most of my chip shots with this exact technique.

The key to the short game is simple, practice. I worked as a club pro in my 20s, and it was amazing how few people actually practiced their short game. They'd hit 2 buckets of drivers on the range, and then drive right past the chipping and putting greens. If you just put in a couple hours a week on short game practice, your scores will PLUMMET. (and it'll help your long game too btw)

It should also be noted that Phil Mickelson uses KBS Tour V 125 S+ wedge shafts, which likely help him deliver that "hands-forward, hinge and hold" technique with more accuracy, as they are very stiff shafts in the butt and mid-section. This means that the shaft won't bend or release too early on him until he is further along in his fore-swing, such that he is more in control of when he actually releases the club at the point of impact and subsequent follow-through. The KBS Tour V shaft model was designed specifically for Phil by Kim Braly, with Phil's input. I currently use this exact same 125 S+ shaft in my gap wedge, and it definitely plays very stiff, so for those looking for less beef in the shaft, I would suggest trying the lower-weighted KBS Tour V models (they are also offered in lighter 100g, 110g, & 120g versions for players who aren't as physically strong but want similar feel and performance). Interestingly, Viktor Hovland uses the KBS Tour V 120X version for his irons, but for all his wedges, he games the ultra-stiff Tour V 130X tour spec version, which is five grams heavier than Phil's 125 S+, and would probably feel like swinging rebar from a construction site. All in all, the KBS Tour V shafts are offered in five different weight flexes (100/110/120/125/130). Try different shafts and go with whatever works best for you.

I was at the 151 Open at Royal Liverpool GC to do some media coverage. I used to do a lot of filming but as a written media this time I did nothing but watch and feel. On Friday Phil was practising at the chipping ground in front of the media centre, and I just stood there watching his chip shot without doing anything else. The feeling was super unreal and I still couldn't believe it was actually happening: The other top players just chipped the balls here and there, but Phil managed to put almost EVERY ball next to the flagstick! No matter if it was a low shot high shot bouncing shot, EVERY ball next to the hole! I still can vividly remember that scene and probably I'll never forget it. Just unbelievable.

I’m a newb golfer, I watched this video and tried it immediately after playing 9 holes. Chipped one in from 30 ft out.

Hey Phil. What's up? I always appreciate watching you get up and down. You and I and (JD) all, had the same golf coach. The best in class, (SL), yup! I grew up around the game, but never knew how to play it. I can usually figure out what to do for 5-7 holes, and scramble a few holes too, but the ones that cause problems for me, are the doubles and triples. Just sayin.
