This film is an absolute riot. On my first viewing I had absolutely no idea where it was going but it never failed to surprise me. Great work Maniac. Someone needs to be highlighting the works of Argento, Fulci, Martino, Deodato, Lenzi & Bava in this modern day & I believe you are the best man for the job.

Well thank you. I appreciate the compliment but there are KZreadrs out there who do a great job talking about these movies as well. Moodz616 and mrparka to name a couple. As grateful as I am that so many people value my opinion on movies I do encourage everyone to watch other KZreadrs as well just to get a different viewpoint. But still, thank you so much for the kind words :)

Just showed this to a couple friends of mine in college and I was so excited to just see their expressions throughout the entire film. The score is something every first time viewer I think notices and rightly so. This is the film that’s inspiring me to start filmmaking myself!!
What’s haunted me, my whole life, about this movie, is the scene where she walks into a room where a child is crying. She wants to comfort the child but then the child turns around and has a frightening face, she screams and runs away. As if that makes the child any different. I saw that scene when I was very young and it had a deep impact on me. I realised how important looks were. To many people. The difference between affection and neglect
I love the overall film, but in particular I love the opening, because rarely have I felt more atmosphere in a film than in the first scene of Phenomena. The sublime music, the astounding visuals and the masterful setup all just create this perfect feeling, so much so that you can almost feel the cold wind hitting you, and then, the real horror begins. Maybe that’s just me, but it’s just so fantastic!

I agree, also the climatic pit sequence is nice too but that first murder sequence is something very special indeed.
Personally this is my second favorite Argento film - despite some pacing issues, I found it really awesome! Jennifer Connelly is great in this one and both she and Donald Pleasence had great chemistry - in fact, I could say that this is my favorite role of hers. And it has one of the best chimp performances in film!
People may recognize the fly Jennifer was working with as the one that became infused with Seth Brundle.
Absolutely love this film - probably my favorite by Argento. I think "Valley" on the soundtrack is one of the all-time greatest horror pieces, and it's a shame it doesn't get more recognition

I like Valley, too! Heavily inspired by Claude Debussy's Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun

@@jonanjello I definitely hear it! Though I prefer Valley :)
The fortune cookie was way too accurate. Edit: Connelly killed it in this. I think this was before Labyrinth with legend Bowie.
Phenomena is by far my favorte Argento. Not his best of course, but it is just bad shit crazy. I just love it. That soundtrack/score btw..
My favorite bug movie? Mimic. Speaking of Pleasence, I watched Land of The Minotaur recently. Pleasence plays a priest who takes on a cult leader played by Peter Cushing.
I almost wish they used the bug psychic stuff for a series.
Best movies of Dario Argento in my opinion 1. Four Flies On Grey Velvet. 2. Trauma 3. The Bird With The Crystal Plumage 4. Phenomena. I haven't watched Susperia yet.

Suspiria è il capolavoro di Dario Argento. Sospetto tu non abbia visto nemmeno Profondo Rosso, nel caso dovessi recuperarlo scommetto che la tua classifica subirà delle modifiche :')
Lord, Jennifer Connolly has Always been gorgeous! When she was younger, she looks how I envision a real life Snow White would look like.👑🕷💜
I would like to see a Australian remake of this movie where it's based in Australia cause The Insects in My country are large and Dangerous Too!😉
Before watching the video I’m going to say it. I love this movie. It’s kind of all over the place but I enjoy it a lot.
I saw Phenomena as Creepers 5 times on theaters! That's how much I liked it! It definitely is a unique giallo that communication with insects and the sleepwalking scenes are awesome. Bear in mind that Creepers is the edited version it wasn't until Anchor Bay released the uncut VHS that this movie was finally seen full length. Good review and cool video!👉😃👈

And now w/ Arrow's latest release we have 3 different cuts? I too saw Creepers in the theater when it was 1st released in 1985. At that time i hadn't seen Suspiria yet and no idea who Argento was. I was also lucky to see Opera on it's first release at the movie theater 2 years later which is still one of my favorite Argento movies.

Loved the Sesame Street reference, lol! 😬
Great review. This film does feels like an abridged novel. That said... I adore Phenomena! and I re-watch every year. Jennifer Connelly is phenomenal--she's my favourite Jennifer alongside Jennifer Jason Leigh. Suspiria, Tenebrae, and Phenomena make, for me, Argento's perfect trifecta.

Seeing you're covering one of my top three giallo films was enough to brighten my day, and then you made the same dumb Muppets joke that swims into my brain every time I try to talk about it, ahhh! 💖

Just wanted to say love your videos You probably are why I might be a giallo/Fulci nut so thanks 😂 anyway, you should create a Twitter also! Keep em coming Maniac, THE GRINDHOUSE WILL NEVER DIE.
I want to share that there is a music video using clips from this movie. It’s a different form of media that encapsulates the essence and beautiful cinematography that the film offers. The song is amazing as well. Search blinders by geographer and you’ll find it!
For me, this was the beginning of the end for Argento. There's no denying that Phenomena is bonkers, operating on pure nightmare logic but as a film it's not overly enjoyable IMO.
I just had a thought when you mentioned she was playin detective with the fly. Do you think that the movie inspired the character Zipper from Rescue Ranger? and omg the do do do do meme! XD I ADORE YOU AND YOUR VIDEOS

(Pushes up Nerd glasses) The song is named Mana Mana...
Definitely one of my favorites!
Hmmmm😋 I smell a good crossover with “The Fly” 1986 and 88 sequel…
Mimic is a blood bug movie.
This movie got some nuggets..im telling..just the music alone..is Masterful.. The movie looks i little sloopy some times..but it aint..Hard cutting cinema greatness..Some scenes are Mr Argentos best.!
Inga is my hero!
Humm...bug movies? I never actually seen a good monster bug film. But...the Nest, Squirm, and Mimic. Those are the only ones I can actually remember.
Am I the only one who thinks that Jennifer Connelly looks like a young Brooke Shields in this movie?

Bug by William Friedkin *Ba Dum Tsss*
This movie inspired a game named Clock tower
Forget Tarzan, Dr. Loomis with a chimp is way cooler
Jennifer Connelly was a babe.
It took me 4 gd minutes into the video before realizing I misread the title. Thought the video was about Tenebrae and was like, "wtf i know it's been awhile since i've seen the movie, but I don't remember *any* of this" lol i should probably go to bed... 🥱
