PhD Research Proposal | the 4 BIG-DEAL sections

PhD research proposals must be structured around these four key things to convince your potential doctoral supervisors that you’re a big deal and that they should 100% support your proposed thesis!
Starting with the introduction, I’ll explain how to explain your research problem, set clear aims and objectives, and outline the potential benefits.
Next up, it’s academic foundations, where I’ll walk you through identifying your research philosophy and conducting a literature review - and tackle one of the most common questions about the literature review: should you do an actual full-on literature review in a PhD research proposal?
After that, it’s all about methodology, where I’ll cover how you should write about your sampling, data collection, analysis methods, and ethical considerations. I’ll explain how you link your methodological choices to research aims and philosophical stance in a way that will really impress the people reading your PhD proposal.
Finally, the section most people have run out of steam on by the time they get to it - project management! I’ll explain about the importance of realistic timelines, resource allocations, and risk management strategies.
By the time you get to the end of the video, you’ll feel much more in control of your PhD research proposal and even excited to write it - yay!

Hope everyone's enjoying the video! If you're currently writing a research proposal, I'd love to know more! What's the proposed research about? Why are you super passionate about it?

Thanks for your comment, here is an example of how research philosophy might be introduced: This research adopts a critical realist approach to understanding young people's experiences of volunteering. The critical realist approach emphasises the identification and examination of underlying mechanisms that influence observable events. This perspective is particularly suited to this research because it allows for an exploration of both the personal motivations and the broader social structures that shape young people's engagement in volunteer activities. By employing this lens, the study will focus on uncovering the root causes of differing volunteering experiences among youth. This theoretical framework shapes the research questions and methodology by ensuring a comprehensive analysis that considers both empirical data and theoretical insights. I hope this is helpful, let me know if you have any further questions.
