    You are gorgeous! Thanks for the video. So for PhD programs, do you have safety & reach schools like what we always do for undergrad applications? How do you know if a program is a reach or not based on the resume?

  • @YooJin

    @YooJin

    3 жыл бұрын

    Ooooo these are all really great questions that are also so hard to answer!! It is good to have safety and reach schools (so maybe 2-3 reach schools from 6-7 applications), but it's really hard to tell where reach schools are b/c it differs from person to person... I think the best way to tell is to get your resume reviewed by people on the admissions board at your own university! :)

    I did but you definitely don’t have to! Not all profs will respond, but sometimes it’s good because some will be on the admissions committee and will at least recognize you. And sometimes they’ll see where you are in terms of getting an interview. Best of luck with admissions!

    Great video! I enjoyed it a lot. The only part I would disagree with is what you said about the GRE. Just because women score lower on the exam doesn't mean that it discriminates against women.. the same goes for those in the low SES, or those whose first language is not English. No matter what exam it is, those without the resources will have a harder time getting a higher score. One gender will always score higher than the other. People who need to make the ends meet and bring food to the table can't afford to have the same research experience you had as a college student or as a post-bac. Does that mean it's unfair to evaluate candidates based on their research background?

  • @YooJin

    @YooJin

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for sharing your ideas! I totally agree that maybe calling the exam "discriminatory" may be extreme (as the ETS also argues), but I also believe that any exam that deters the acceptance of populations that are generally under-represented in higher education should not be considered in admissions, as it's contributing overall to the educational oppression of these populations. I think it's fairly obvious that students of low SES score tend to score lower than high SES students due to educational opportunities; I also think the gender gap in standardized testing is very undermined, even though women consistently score lower in standardized testing- a very legitimate concern, as we still need more women leaders in all fields of science. Also, you seem to be making some assumptions about my background, but I just want you to know that many postbacs, including myself, have been low SES and were only able to make it to where we are today because: 1. The federal gov't funds public education. 2. The gov't funds high-performing students in the form of scholarships/financial aid to get through college. 3. The gov't funds research programs to pay postbacs and grad students to do research. I do think the gov't should do more in terms of bringing everyone to equal ground earlier on, especially in segregated cities, and it may take longer for those without knowledge of these programs to take advantage of them. But there are options and it's never too late, from what I've observed from my peers, who come from all kinds of backgrounds.

    Ahhh this is a great question, but unfortunately one that I don't have an answer to :( There are grad student scholarship offices that you can contact for your program of interest to inquire about this topic, and I think many schools have internal scholarships you'd be eligible for. Hope this helps!
