Listen: • Pharoahe Monch - Damage
New York hip hop legend returns with PTSD, following up the lackluster W.A.R. with a more solid project.

soulaiman agalf Yeah Internal Affairs is one of my favourite rap albums of all time. 99 was a great year for hip hop. Even W.A.R. had some legit bangers though.

***** It it really good but it is a bit messy to me. I can see why you love it though.
I'm a bit bias'd as I'm a HUGE Monch fan and I loved this Album. But I love all his stuff. GOAT to me.

That Andre 3000 line you mentioned was from Int'l Players Anthem... classic song
denaun, lmao he sounded like he didnt know that was the dude from D12
This album is easily top 3 best this year... Monch is super underrated.. His mindset alone puts him in another stratosphere... Solid project from the legend himself !!!!
Anthony, I would really like to know your thoughts on asher roths new release retrohash! Please do it fam
theneedledrop @theneedledrop: Denaun is Denaun Porter of the rap group D12, he produced a chunk of the album "Desire" as well. He produces, raps and sings.
This album was cool, I thought the beats were decent, and the singing was weird and wack, but I don't listen to Monch for that, I listen to him for the bars, so I was cool with it.

pharaohe is a great singer and im six years too late to call you a moron
Liking that death record in the background . You should mack a review of that album.
Denaun is KonArtist from D12. He's been doing production for yrs & has collab with Pharoahe on his last 3 albums. They have great chemistry together imo. Didn't kno if u knew that when giving the review. But besides that I agree & enjoyed ur review. Idk where id rank this in his discography but its definitely up there for now. Very cohesive
I disagree with a lot of your complaints about this album. To me, Pharoahe is the type of over the top personality that will inevitably divide some critics; as songs like you mentioned, Broken, or Scream employ over the top, exaggerated concepts and styles to get their point across. I find a lot of enjoyment in MC's like Monch, Sticky Fingaz, ODB, etc.. who experiment with vocals and ideas in ways that can sometimes be very polarizing as the lack of "good" taste or rationale elicits a joy and fun that is sometimes lacking in overly calculated music. I can agree that not every idea works on this album however, I actually really liked the off kilter bass rhythm of Broken Again, and enjoyed the hook a lot. I also really enjoyed Bad MF and thought it was a fun, playful and braggadocious way to break up the darkness of most of the album; with lines like Pussy Pop and the obnoxious chorus serving as indulgent satire. I also disagree that Pharoahe's verses on Rapid Eye Movement were too corny or over the top, as I thought he absolutely slaughtered it. the MASE line was a very clever and creative call back to a class verse from STRESS, and absolutely hilarious "now that's practicing sacrilegious activism", the monogamous with the ammo "divorce my ex-calibers" line, the trying to see Man-United, etcc.. the list goes on and on when it comes to absolutely grade A hip hop shit talk, there are very few MC's on the planet who can come up with such clever ways to fuck around lyrically and being over the top and creative is part of what makes him stand out as a rapper. Also on tracks like The Jungle and Losing My Mind, when Monch gets more serious and down to business, we get some of the most powerful hip hop tracks of the year. Losing My Mind in particular is this album's opus to me, and my biggest disappointment with the overall product is that there wasnt a consistent mood that was maintained throughout, that matched the power of that track. Pharoahe's lyrical performance on this album was easily worth the price of admission, as it features some profoundly clever lyrics that also provide emotional depth; the production was also quite solid throughout, especially on the Marco Polo produced tracks and Losing My Mind. Overall I'd give this album an 8 or 8.5 as I think it was far more consistently good than you found it, the only complaint I can't really dispute is the "WTF is this" hook on Scream; it's too absurd to be taken seriously and not funny enough to serve as comic relief, its a risk that didn't pay off.
"This year I will make sure that I do a video where I do a vinyl update and talk about whatever those record store pickups were" - Antwon Fandango 2014
I appreciate your attention to detailin the review; however I think you should really listen to the album in one sitting. Its a theme album. He lived up to the whole them of the album and it played out like a movie. There arent too many concept albums and I really think you didnt give it a fair shake. I hear you about some of the hooks but the overall album is really tought out and greatly executed. I think you were a little too hard on it.
I really loved this album. Maybe because it spoke to me a bit too much, and was a bit too real at times, but I thought it got the message through quite well. I mean, for the singing part, he could have used autotune (or more than he did, if he did) but leaving the song imperfect, it gets the sincerity across better, I think. Probably the skits were a bit much, but overall, you get the feeling that this character Monch is painting has nothing left to lose, and is ready to off him/herself, but is giving this future tech a try instead. I could go on, but I won't I loved the album, and I'm replying because I liked your review of it.

My favorite song from monch especially mixed with the song broken heart, which was on lost in translation, IDK if that was an offical album, but broken heart is a prequel to broken again, the end of broken heart ends with the begining sound of broken again. I editied them together so its one long song =)
i get hyped when you upload new hip hop reviews its either going to be funny or dope and this is dope first time listening to it, talib kweli is so gud
This sounds like a dope record, Also I bought Monch's Internal Affairs album from FYE a few days ago.
One of the best albums this year....
In my opinion, the best album this year. I can't see any album topping this any time soon, since it has great production and overall it's just a very well made album - not perfect though. 9/10

The roots album is on the same level as this creatively but sonically might be better in different ways than PTSD imo......"And then you shoot your cousin" is a masterpiece...the only reason id give it to Pharaohe is because there wasn't enough black thought on the Roots album and Pharoahe is just a beast throughout the whole entire project.. Lyrically and his flow is just in another galaxy..

Chris Nite I was actually very disappointed when I heard the new The Roots album. I've been a fan for years and so far this is their only "bad" album. Black Thought didn't have enough verses, like you said. 'Undun' is a great album and I still play it often.
Great review. I hope DEHH reviews this as well.

Keen to check out your review of Future - Honest. xoxoo
Do the new Army of the Pharaohs album!
Did you mix the albums up in your head here? 'The Grand Illusion' is the last track on WAR :P
Yo, Review "Southeastern"-Jason Isbell. You may have don't it already but I can't find. This album is an absolutely stellar. YOU NEED TO CHECK IT OUT. The track "Elephant" is one of the most beautiful sad thing I've ever heard. It still absolutely cuts me.
well hello there Anthony, have you ever thought about reviewing 180 by Palma Violets? it's been a while since it came out but I'm kind of interested what you think about it
Please review Kelis's new Food album. I really liked her when she did Flesh Tone and I really like her soul sound with "Food".
Still waiting for a review of Winter and the Wolves by Grieves sir!
can you please review Stay trippy just for fun? Id love to know what you think
You should review Trophy Scars - Holy Vacants. Neo-phsycedelic blues.
You're doing a great deal for Hip-hop
Ironically, I liked most of his songs from WAR better than I did for this project. If you had a problem with the hooks, I personally felt the hooks on WAR were more theme and tone consistent. Whereas here on PTSD, whiled I liked the lyricism, I was only moved emotionally by one track called "THE JUNGLE" That song had a Nas "I GAve you Power" vibe to it or quite similar to Lupe's "Daydreamin" if you get where I'm going with that. That's just what I think anyways.
I'm surprised you didn't pick up on the fact that the last track - The Grand Illusion - is a lyrical rehash of the song of the same name from W.A.R., only with new production. I felt that was really lazy on Monch's part to do that.
Great album rapid eye movement was nuts bar after bar on that one
Hey theneedledrop , I listened to "Locksmith - A Thousand Cuts". Its an album worth covering here.
I know that this album came out last year but make a review on " The Golden Age " by woodkid . Really nice record and very interesting artist
Can you review the new Roots track, when the people cheer?
Hey Needledrop can you explain the line about the rodes paved in henna and the whole genocide line for me and my twin brother please
Anthony, please review "Sweven" by Morbus Chron, I think this album has a solid nominee for AOTY(I know it's early but this album to my opinion is one of the best I heard this year)
"Hudge Pudge" and "Stray Bullets" were my songs by Organized Konfusion. "Here's another sound with a funky intro!".
that death album in the back is amazingggggg
You should really review the album entitled Purpose by Lyrically Twisted. Very inspiring artist that should be given the credit that he deserves
There in my catalog. 2 OK albums and Pharoahe’s first one. I didn’t listen to desire and War. Just listened to this album on KZread, and it’s right on par but what I expected.
Man I want that Death album in the background!

Did you like the Death documentary Anthony?
My favorite album of all time
Do Future Honest, I really want to hear your take on it Anthony.
This album was not thatt great to me, though, I heard organized and whoa didn't expect discovering something that good (the new editing is hilarious)
nice, he came out with a new album
A review of Apollo Brown - Thirty Eight??
I like Anthony's reviews but in my opinion he was really off in this one. Despite some weaknesses (the skits, scream), Pharoahe Monch's lyrical complexity and flawless delivery make this album stand out. The hook on "Bad MF" is energetic and great and "Broken Again" is very emotional and touching. From what I've heard this album is easily the best hip hop album of the year so far with the cunninlynguists project coming at a close second. An easy 9 in my opinion.
For The World To See!
The new Asher Roth is pretty good! You should check it out. Also, his Fast Life video gives me feels
You underplayed how great the CC line was, I almost have it memorized. if this is wrong its because its off the top of my head. (Squeezed 7 cc's so i could see the seven seas and CC'd all my friends so they could see what I was seein.)

Please review retro hash my good sir.
I wouldn't call his output that spotty. W.A.R. isn't all that great, but Internal Affairs, Desire, P.T.S.D. and his new one with his band th1rt3en are all great.
Ok, I understand that this review (but has the feel of a critique) is perspective oriented, as most reviews are. However, where my Scooby Doo confusion came in (rhuh?!?!) is when he states that when he starts talking about the song where Pharoah Monch is telling about the dream, and the list of things he says that he dreams about is "completely ridiculous". Man, how many dreams have you had that AREN'T completely ridiculous?!?! - Seriously?!?! - Really?!?!
Peace Fam.
The upcoming Agalloch and Eyehategod albums? I have a feeling you'll probably review the Agalloch album, but it's EHG's first album in 14 years, so I'd really like to see you review that too. Either way, keep up the great reviews!
