Pharisees and Sadducees

The Pharisees and the Sadducees are two important groups of Jewish leaders in the New Testament. Most of the Pharisees and Sadducees not only rejected Jesus and his teachings, they rejected each other. The Pharisees were experts on the law and believed in a strict adherence to important interpretations of the law as a path to holiness. The Sadducees, who were a priestly class, focused on the Temple as the path to holiness and rejected both the resurrection of the dead and the afterlife.

If Sadducees didn't believe in afterlife, why do they believe in God in the first place? Doesn't the ultimate goal of believing in God is to see Him in the afterlife?

Correct. . The Pharisees also followed the “Mishna” which was a set of Oral Laws & traditions that the Israelites followed during their captivity in Babylon. . Christ followed the teachings of moses but had his own insertions about sacrifice and it being done away with. . Thats why people believed he was false. . He taught against certain laws that were kept for centuries

The Pharisees taught the "oral law" which was their interpretation of the written law. These are the "traditions" that Jesus spoke of. Jesus never contradicted the written law of Moses. He argued and debated with the Pharisees in regards to the oral law that was being held over the people. This was a sin according to Deuteronomy 4:2.

Jesus opposed the law of Moses.. And he explained.. In john 8:44 in speaking with the jewish pharisees.. "Your father is the devil" and as to Moses 613 laws.. Even with just ten of those.. If a person was to stumble upon even one heed be guilty of all. ... So what is the name of the pharisees..God or father. And in time..which is reflected within revelations 12 and thirteen.. We conquier the dragon..or beast.. Whom casts fire upon those who wont worship the beast.. Hence Jahovha cast fire upon those who wont worship him..at the tower..of Jahovha.. And elijsha has the devil cast fire upon those who wont listen.. Thus..as a dragon cast fire from above...or Yahweh or what ever name.. "The truth is god indwells within you..as god is the light of life. As you are one with God." the traits of god are.. Love and share love..walk as one and in this..awareness..we will understand not only is the kingdom of god within..but god is very personal and very alive firstly within you..Then alive throughout the universe. God can be seen..sometimes when you close your eyes and look into the clouds of gas. God helps us..as he is the helper..god is the truth and spirit of truth. Explained in john 14:17 the holy spirit..is god. "The light of life" within....:) but you can give your power to the dragon if you like.. Just ask a Jahovha witness..to pray to the dragon with you.. Or..maybe be smart.. And hold no name higher... Than.. Jesus Christ...:) say does the light of life or the holy spirit have a name..? .. So now you know...the false prophet.."Moses" and the Dragon.. Pretty much all the farytails of the torah or old testimine..are just jewish..stories.. But truley... John 14:17.. is the truth. And that's why jesus was sent.. By" the light of life" as.. "He who believes in me does not believe in me alone but believes in the one who sent me."

You're answering your own question: yes, they considered earthly blessings as God's provision for their obedience. Besides, they saw the Law itself as something which brought joy and peace to their lives. But it is quite easy not to believe in an afterlife if you're the ruling class without much strife in this life.

as to those saying the bible does not support an afterlife, then know that the new testament talks about the 'Kingdom of God' to come. It talks about how the people that were at Jesus's time could enter the kingdom of God (i.e. saying their is paradise and life after death). However, i haven't finished reading the old testament.. but as of far, I am only up to the history parts of the book (which don't talk about the afterlife much). But i am pretty confident that the old testament talks abt the afterlife.

the sadducees also didn’t recognize the rest of the Tanakh, like the samaritans they only believed in the Torah, the sadducees also didnt believe in a messiah like modern day reform jews, jesus himself also about the pharisees “do as they say but not as they do” he also said the pharisees were not far from the truth but the sadducees had no clue what they were talking about, he also wore tefillin and tallit when he prayed just like jews have done since the time of the babylonian exile, also the oral isn’t a seprate set of laws but an intrepretation on how to keep the written law, a lot of the things the pharisees(and jesus)followed werent part of either law but were simply old traditions such as washing your hands before eating, or saying a blessing before you eat and praying after you eat, keep in mind the torah says you only have to do the prayer after eating but jesus AND the pharisees wanted to do the extra blessings before their meals as well, also the pharisees agreed with jesus that it’s ok to save lives on Shabbat, the sadducees did not, also a lot of jesus’s teachings were the same as teachings from the mishna and the school of hillel, such as the golden rule and the quote “we were not made for the sabbath but the sabbath was made for us”, also the sadducees didnt really care about religion, they were more of an elitist political sect than a religious one

The Sadducees were not just descended from a priest named Zadok? Zadok was a direct descendant of the first high priest Aaron. The Sadducees were the sons of Aaron traced back to the Exodus and the Tabernacle. The Sadducees only accepted the Torah as law because when Aaron and his sons were given the high priesthood the only canon at that time was the torah. We know that the Sadducees resisted the concept of both Oral law and tradition as meaningless and not supported by the mosaic/ levitical law. The Sadducees also rejected adoption of the non biblical modern concept of “satellite temples “ called by greek word Synagogue. According to the encyclopedia Judaica many scholars believe the first Synagogues appears in 2 Samual at the inauguration of king Josiah who destroyed the high places the relics and houses of worship. Josiah also rediscovered the Books of the law kept in the Temple ( torah) and enforced it. The Pharisees hated the Sadducees because God gave them the High priesthood and leadership of the Sanhedrin .. for this reason the Pharisees created the synagogue to compete with the temple and erode the power and popularity of the Sadducees. The only thing that could destroy the power of the Sadducees was the destruction of the temple and the priesthood genealogical records kept in the temple.

Churches of men, do you really love YahuShua, He whom you call Jesus? Do you long to obey Him? Do you delight in His Law? Then obey and love Him! For what is life without love? And what is love without the free will to choose love? A gift commanded is no gift at all, as it is written! Therefore brothers and sisters choose Him, yes YahuShua. He who is the great I AM WHO I AM! For who or what you choose defines what you do. Thus says the Lord to the churches called pretense: [The Lord answered] Beloved, I have poured out My spirit on all flesh, even as I was poured out for you from the beginning. Yet no one comes to drink, not one is willing to receive of Me as I truly am. I have brought forth the rains in their due season, both the former and the latter, and still the crop wanes and bears only bitter fruit. Behold, the voice of The Lord your God has spoken, yet few have ears to hear, few are willing to open their heart and truly listen. I tell you the truth, before Me stands a very proud people, multitudes of foolish children who can not discern their right hand from their left. Their knowledge is corrupt; all their thoughts and musings only serve to uphold their vile nature. For they do not retain God in their thoughts, and from The Holy they are far removed. Therefore, thus says The Lord: The churches of men are perverse, their ways corrupt, a wholly ignorant and vain people, multitudes of deceived children, a people who were to prepare My way before Me! Yet they have chosen another way, twisting and segregating the Scriptures, both adding to and taking away, that they may continue to uphold their own corrupt doctrines and filthy traditions, which I hate! Therefore, woe to those who dwell in the churches of men! Woe to all who walk in their ways! HYPOCRITES! And of the hypocrite’s portion they shall surely receive, unless they repent and return to Me wholly and in truth! Says The Lord. For I tell you the truth, behold, I declare it to you plainly, if I were to come down and speak in the former manner, every one of these churches of men would bar My way before Me; even every one of them would cast Me out and seek to have Me arrested! Yet I have indeed passed through the midst of them, and though they have not seen Me, as I live, says The Lord, they have surely rejected Me! I have poured out My spirit, yet they refuse to drink! I have spoken to them, yet they shut their ears to My voice! I have sent My messengers to them, yet they cast them out With great anger and violence, persecuting and slandering them!... Behold, even the least of these, My servants, have been Mistreated by these so-called people of faith!... THEY HAVE SURELY HATED ME! It is written: The heart of this people has waxed gross, their ears are very dull of hearing and their eyes they have shut, lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart, and be fully converted, and I should heal them. Yet they have not returned to Me, nor will they repent. How then shall I heal them? For only those who know they are sick seek out The Physician. Yet those who perceive themselves as well will in no wise come to Me. Indeed they remain seated firmly in the darkness of their own understanding, resting upon their laurels by which they highly esteem themselves, as they for a pretense worship another messiah. For one who peers through stained glass can not behold his own image, nor is he able to see those inside clearly. For he sees only an outline, a blur of color obscuring his vision. And those on the inside who peer outward remain blinded, able to perceive only a shadow of what truly is, holding up the hand against the brightness, for fear of the noonday sun which is about to come in. Thus they prefer the light filtered and the brilliance masked, by means of all this painted glass. What then shall a people such as this do when night has fallen? Thus the churches of men do always take the name of The Lord in vain, by all they say and do. From the least even unto the greatest, they pollute My name, even to the continual blaspheming of the Spirit. Therefore I shall indeed remove My hand, and My spirit shall return to Me. Behold, from every individual who refuses to give heed to My voice and embrace My correction has it departed already. Yet let all those who remain in My love understand and have peace. For though My spirit departs from the multitudes and the ensuing darkness be thick, though wickedness overflows and every man of pride who being wise in his own eyes is left confounded, I shall not make a total end. For My hand shall remain with the faithful, and My strength shall be revealed in My anointed. Behold, My spirit shall well up within the hearts of the penitent and come upon My chosen as a welcomed rain, and they shall be greatly increased, shining ever brighter, even amidst thick clouds and darkness. Behold The Lord’s purpose, for it shall surely Be accomplished, it shall surely be done: From My left hand, judgment shall be poured out Upon the desolate, the high-minded and the hypocrite... Yet under the shadow of My right hand, The humble shall be hidden... For I am The Lord, and I do not change." Says He whose name is YAHUSHUA-YAHUWAH, The Father and The Son are One and His name ONE. From His Volumes of Truth, the Word of the Lord spoken to this generation. Sadly there are many who crucify Him again and again by all they say and do. If He were to come in the former manner, like the times of Immanuel, the churches of men would treat God like the pharisees. Come out of the church preaching everlasting torment, yes forsake this other longhaired messiah. For there is no life in idols! Didnt He warn already, saying "see i have told you beforehand"? Do not be offended by The Father's discipline, for as it is written: who of His prophets and servants did He not first abase? Can any man be humbled without first being brought low? That means all of us. I leave you with love and wishes that will embrace YahuShua as He really is, for there is only One God: YAHUWAH He who causes to be His face, YAHUSHUA. Even as i pray i'm also counted worthy to walk with Him and you in the cool of day once again. Look past me for im just a mere man. And remember, thus says the Lord to this last generation also, in His Volumes of Truth, love one another: "Where does a shepherd spend his time, and which of his sheep require the most attention? Therefore pray in like manner. For indeed the ill of the flock require the most attention, and the one in ninety-nine who has gone astray shall by no means be forsaken. And though there are many who stand inside locked gates, while you stand outside, do you not remain all of one fold? And when I have freed them, will you not all rejoice together? Therefore treat them as such, And pray for them, even double, And it shall be well with you... For those who arrive last shall be Embraced by those who had arrived first... Therefore let your heart remember, As you look to the day... Says The Lord."

The Sect of the Sadducees was the religious backbone of the Pro Hellenist (pro Greek culture) Temple-Centric commercial and political elite of Jerusalem and it's environs connected to commercial interests that depended heavily on foreign trade. Even before the surrender of Judah to Alexander the Great in 332 BCE, the wealthy and political elite of Jerusalem had already taken a keen interest in Greek culture. By the time of the Seleucid hegemony of Judea, more than a few of the Jewish priestly class were quite OK with compromising their duties to Yahweh to pay homage to the gods of Mt. Olympus, ultimately resulting in the sacrifice of a pig to Zeus in Jewish Temple in 156 BCE, resulting in the Maccabean Revolt. Over time, the Pro Hellenist Jews began to integrate their ancient beliefs about the Afterlife with Greek Mythology. For example, the former, ancient, Israelite belief, that the souls of the properly buried dead "sleep" with their corpses in the upper part of an underground cave they called Sheol, morphed into a more Hellenist view--that the fully-conscious souls of the dead separate from their bodies once-and-for-all at death, and travel to a permanent spirit world where the pagan god Hades (brother of Zeus) ruled, by re-naming Upper Sheol "Abraham's Bosom." Further, they changed the former belief of the Israelites that improperly buried souls, having no corpse to anchor to, are doomed to descend and disappear into nothingness into the lower, darker part of the Sheol Cave--the Pit, imagining the conscious souls of the unrighteous are punished, at least for a time, in a lower part of Hades' realm, separated from Abraham's Bosom, only by a chasm. Consequently, like the pagan, Hellenist Greeks, and later Romans, they did not believe the bodies of the dead would ever rise again, as there would be no need for them to! Upon death, one's fully conscious soul travels directly to its deserved destiny, though they also imagined some of the unrighteous could, in time, pay for their sins and, upon completing their sentences, be ferried over the chasm of Lower Hades to Abraham's Bosom. If that sounds familiar, it should, because it was their belief in some form of limited post death retribution that became the basis for the later Catholic belief in Purgatory! Sadly, so many Neo Evangelicals continue to make it seem as if the Sadducees believed only in the existence of this life simply because they denied the need for a bodily resurrection and, of course, for their deep political and financial connections to whatever earthly power was extending its hegemony over Judea, had no interest in an Independent Judea or a Messiah King to come and establish it! For this reason, they joined with the elite representatives of the Pharisees to have Jesus condemned to death, because both sects felt threatened by his followers who believed him to be the Expected Messiah, even though the Pharisees did believe and teach a Messiah was to come, just not someone from the outback of Galilee who repeatedly called them out for their hypocrisies! Nice overview, I would only add two things that people forget about the Bible, ot only refers to the Sadducees specifically in Jerusalem that supported Herod. The Sadducees of Rome are a different group and alive and will. And it is not "The Resurrection of Jesus" that we have a problem with but the concept that resurrection happens in general. Big difference. Save for those who believe in zombie apocalypse few people in the world today believe in raising the dead.

You missed it dude. Jesus was against the pharisees because of their oral interpretations of Gods law. Jesus preached and lived according to Gods perfect law given to moses. And the pharisees added to Gods law through their own interpretation. That is why Jesus clashed with them, we should not add to, or take away from Gods law. Modern Judaism adds to the law, Modern Christianity takes away from the law. Both are wrong.

Flavius Josephus in Chapter 8 of "The Jewish War" states: 2.(119)For there are three philosophical sects among the Jews. The followers of the first of which are the Pharisees; of the second, the Sadducees; and the third sect, which pretends to a severer discipline, are called Essenes. These last are Jews by birth, and seem to have a greater affection for each other than other sects have Well, Josephus confirms that neither the Pharisees nor Saducees in Jesus times were real Jews, but, as John proclaims in his Gospel: Fake Jews and Satan"s synagogue. Therefore, it were not real Jews that condemned Jesus, but Persian and Ismaelite(arab) converts to judaism.

They followed the Torah , and most likely started to be known as Pharisees and Saudicees after Moses . It would have been more appropriate for you to say that most Pharisees and Sadducees rejected Him. Don't forget Nicodemus. How many Jews were in the 5,000 fed with bread and fish?

Jesus was rejected by those in the ruling authority and knowledge of the scriptures, Pharisees and Sadducees (most, but not all), while simultaneously received by many Jewish people, not because of natural bloodline but of trusting in His Name.
