For those who do not know, this song was originally written and recorded by the Los-Angeles-based band Phantom Planet circa 2002. Shortly thereafter, someone connected with production of The OC tv series heard it and decided it would make a great theme song for the show even though it had not been written for that purpose. The band has so far released five full-length proper studio albums over the past 22 years with an eclectic repertoire of songs ranging in style from Beatlesesque and Beach-Boys-influenced alternative pop rock (think Weezer, e.g.) to post-punk low-fi indie garage rock (think Fugazi, e.g.). Their front man Alex Greenwald is an accomplished songwriter, singer, multi-instumentalist, record producer, and occasional film/television/commercial actor/model who also happens to be gifted with irresistible social charm and a spontaneous deadpan wit. I have often said to anyone who cared to listen that if music had not been Alex's first love, then he probably could have enjoyed a successful career as a cute comedic character actor (imagine a Khazarian version of Ashton Kutcher). My impression is that Alex experiences a genuine sense of self-fulfillment performing music for people, and I have personally witnessed him frequently go out of his way to entertain and to please his fans - - most notably on one particular occasion in 2008 when he and his band mates performed an extemporaneous acoustic set of songs, each one selected by personal request, for an audience of about 50 strangers crammed into some random female fan's private apartment living room located only a few blocks away from a famous concert venue (The Fillmore, San Francisco) where Phantom Planet had just played their official public show earlier that evening. I will never forget the humorously surreal moment when the apartment tenant's male roommate, who had been fast asleep in the upstairs bedroom and initially unaware of what was happening, groggily came out from the dark bedroom after a couple of songs and stood at the top of the stairs where in the moment of realization he shouted, "Holy shit! Phantom Planet are in our fucking living room!" to which Alex, while still strumming his guitar in the middle of a song, responded by calmly looking up at him and sheepishly asking, "Did we wake you up?"
