Phantom Comparison - Christine Blocking Raoul

Video comparing the moment in The Phantom of the Opera, 'Final Lair' scene, where Christine shields Raoul from the Phantom. ("So do you end your days with me, or do you send him to his grave?" etc.)
No, the RAH concert is not included here. Insert same old spiel about refraining from posting repeat couples to save time while still getting as wide a variety as possible.
Also, I messed up a bit and did not click the option to have the captions fade in and out. Oops. Sorry about that.

    44:32 Ramin Karimloo and Leila Benn Harris's version feels very tender and soft. The way he holds her and softly says "Do you end your days with me?" looking into her eyes, caressing her hair, swaying back and forth, and being overall very gentle with her. And the way he growls and charges at Raoul at the end is 100% pure Ramin emotion there, gotta love that.

    I watched the World Tour a few weeks ago, with Brad Little and Sara Sarres. And during this scene, Christine death stared the Phantom and just stared at the phantom as she slowly led the Phantom away from Raoul before the Phantom was scared away to the other side of the stage. Something i've never seen but i loved the emotions of Sara especially the stare she did to the phantom...

And what is up with the US Tours where the Phantom throws Christine on the bed? Some Phantoms were scary, though, especially those who touches Christine's face and she's shaking her head. Thanks for these amazing comparisons!

    Last time I saw the tour they did some awful things with it. Durning the unmasking scene they had the Phantom actually growl at Christine like a dog. And during Masquerade they had Christine's skirt flick up to where you saw her knickers. Trista Moldovin was Christine. I think Gary Mauer may have been the Phantom. I think it was around 2010. Seems to have gotten a bit worse since then.

  • @PrismsofGlass

    @PrismsofGlass

    7 жыл бұрын

    Gary Mauer left the show in 2006 (returning briefly in 2007, but that was on Broadway). If you saw Trista Moldovan and it was in 2010, the Phantom should have been Tim Martin Gleason, or perhaps one of his understudies. The growling thing sounds like something his Phantom would have done, though the skirt flick honestly sounds more like an accident. The tour has completely changed since then, with new costumes, sets, and blocking.

    I think it makes perfect sense and aligns with the Phantom's previous line, "Pity comes too late! Turn around and face your fate!" Christine is trying to touch him out of compassion and in an appeal to his better nature, and he knows that and tries to avoid it. Alternatively, he feels some sense of remorse and wrongness at what he's doing, and doesn't want Christine touching him because he doesn't deserve it. Or he's just not used to anyone touching him at all, due to a lifetime of isolation. All of those reasons make sense to me.

    If it keeps Raoul from dying for one second more, that's one more second she can use to try to turn the Phantom away from his path. And in the end, it's not about "how much will it really do"; it's about doing the RIGHT THING, it's moral and emotional defiance, that Christine will not just stand back and let the Phantom have his way, but push back even if she knows it's ultimately useless.

    Well if you know anything about nooses, the loop has to be big enough to take it off the person's head, and for it to be big enough, you have to loosen the knot. But she can't because the rope is being pulled tight far above her. Raoul is also just barely on his feet so she's also risking him being strangled if she does too much. Even the Phantom does not just pull the noose off - he burns the string holding the noose up, which allows Raoul to loosen the knot enough to pull it off.
