I'm so late to the party. I never played this back in the day because my internet wasn't fast enough nor did I really even know about this game. But in 2021 I'm playing online right now with the dreampi having a blast with it and the small community of people who still play it. It's crazy seeing this many people online at one time back in the day.

I know I'm years late to this party, but this brings back such great memories. I was playing around this time, even before V2 came out, and it's just magic to see how things were back then - everyone excited about how "new" everything felt, people were talkative and helpful, it was just a good time all around. As good of a solo experience it can be to go back and play from the beginning on PC now, you'll never be able to capture the same spirit as the original release. All these years later, everyone has already seen and done everything there is to do in the game, so there's not much sense of discovery and adventure anymore. It's one of those games you wish you could wipe your memory of and do it all over again, or just go back in time.

This is awesome, I played PSO online in 2009/2010 with a BBA and have over lockdown set up a DreamPi and got back online again! Love this game so much, had a Dreamcast in early 2001 but never had it online and its amazing to see actually online play from back then. thanks for uploading!

Man this is so crazy watching this. A piece of history. Thank you so much for having the forethought of recording this back in the day.

Man, this makes me feel some kinda way. I logged so many hours on PSO back then. lots of all-nighters.... can't believe it's been 20 years. I forget the severs I was on, but it's crazy to think one of those background players might have been me.

The Member Berries are strong with this one. XD Thank you for uploading. I'm 95% sure I have VHS-captured footage of PSO v.1 online play from these glory days. I'm going to have to dig it up as well.

What a fantastic dose of nostalgia! I spent countless hours in PSO on the Dreamcast. I think it was my first online gaming experience, PSO and Quake 3 arena on 56k. Those were some good times.

This brings so many memories, played PSO v1 and 2 on DC since the first day it came out here in Europe until the very last day closed severs. This game was no game, it was life itself.

The interface, graphics, UI and audio are so aesthetic. They really hit it out of the ballpark with those things.

Man 2001. It was culturally still the 90s. I wish I could have played this back then. I would have been 13 at the time, but I didn't own a Dreamcast back then. KZread didn't even exist yet. The little colored buttons flipping animation when a player joins your game is exclusive to the Dreamcast versions, and it's kind of a shame because it's a nice loading animation. The later ports of pso just have a text box telling you that another player is joining, which just isn't as fun to look at. No red boxes yet to tell you that an item was a rare drop. You had to actually go up to the item to find out. Very interesting.

man if you got anymore tapes of the old pso days you should reupload them! it would be cool to see more chatter amongst the other players from almost 20 years ago!

I'm on a new account, so this is a repost but I felt like it needed to be reposted anyways. I know this video does not have many views compared to other gaming videos, but I wanted to let you know that I really appreciate you posting this. I never even played this game, was an infant, not even 3 when this video was recorded. But I do have a tendency to record gaming sessions with friends just for memory and keepsake, so watching this made me feel a sad sort of nostalgia and yearning sensation I cant quite explain. Perhaps the fact you and your friends probably eventually changed games without swapping other social media info and probably lost touch, just makes me sad to think about it, since I have experienced the same. And this I'm guessing was a very special video since it was your first time online with real players and such, to the other players it was just them playing with a newbie lower level and unaware that the play session was gonna be preserved and posted online like 10 years in the future. This probably sounds weird crazy ramblings that I'm saying this stuff, and my apologies, I just want to let you know that even with this video being mostly unknown, I greatly appreciate this video and the nostalgic yearning it gave me, reminded me to appreciate my friends and gaming sessions while I'm still in my youth. It feels like this video should be more popular, for how important it is, for what it shows, and for what it reminded me. I'll probably be back time and time again to rewatch this piece of history. Thanks for posting this, and for replying to me after all these years of this video being up. I hope maybe someday you can get your old tapes back somehow, and take my subscribe :) Have a fantastic day.

seems the dreamcast version online was just as wild as the gamecube online. My first experience with PSO was the gamecube version played the crap out of it online.

Oh my god.... Watching this has made me get my Dreamcast back out, ordered a VGA and the gear to get online so I'll be playing that Sylverant server soon. Seems to always have couple rooms going when I've checked the status on their site.

I played from around when the game launched on Gamecube in 03 until around 2006. Didn't put in as many hours as some folks. Maxed out at level 190 or so on my main. Recently played the dreamcast version online again which was cool thanks to Sylverant and DreamPi.

Oh GOD. I played this forever in second year of uni (probably around 2000-2001). I miss it so much! I think I still have one of my old memory cards hanging around.

My body is overwhelmed with nostalgia. You have no idea how much memories you unlocked after watching this footage. This was the best game ever to play in the early 2000s. I went through like so many DC's playing this game; especially in battle mode 6. Miranda 7 (whatever lobby because we owned that block) - Home of the Battlers. It was where I usually stayed at; My characters were "Harle (my first character since v1 FOnewearl) 18, Veronica, Celia (often paired with Lede - HUnewearls), French Maid (The battling RAceseal) , Haku (HUmar), SheBitch (My HUCeseal) Challenge mode was fun too especially when you get your own weapon at the end; inscripted! I had high hopes for PSO 2 but I don't know what happen to it.

PSO2 doesn't even compare. i like Universe okay, but PSO2 doesn't come close. it's full of microtransactions and lacks the feel of the original.

A true shame that PSO Universe wasn't near as good as this. The PSP Phantasy Star games were real good. To this day we never got a true sequel to PSO. If I wasn't so lazy, I'd start a petition that no one would sign, so no one would see for a true PS02..=/ at least we still can play Blue Burst on PC, thanks to independent servers.

This game is my favorite online rpg. There’s no BS. It’s so chill but fun at the same time. It’s simple to meet up with people and I’m playing this for the first time just a few months ago so there’s no nostalgia involved.

I loved pso and when 2 was announced I did a happy dance on my techer on Phantasy Star Universe. I have played PSO, PSU(Xbox 360 and PC(JP), and no PSO 2(JP). I really miss PSU for some reason. Maybe it was all the hours of sleeping warriors I miss. Only game I ever spent a week of paid vacation to play. It was for the spread needle G :D

I finally got the chance to try Ver. 2 a few months ago with my original well-geared max level character from Ver. 1 and I could barely make it past the first room of Forest.

My first online game!!! What a memories! i played once on 2002 and after continue from 2004 till 2007(official)2010(private) My name was Arena128,Arena,Mayo,DarkSynbios

Playing PSO in solo has that uncanny yet interesting liminal ambiance you could get with it.

oooh the nostalgia

You can play within 10-15 minutes if you want, no matter on PC or on the Dreamcast or Gamecube. 1. The PC Version (PSO Blue Burst) is exactly the same, first time i played back in 2005 i was skeptic, but its the same fantastic game, only better. It not only has the complete EP1 and EP2 (with all its weapons, enemies, items ect) , but also a totally new Episode, which is the Episode 4, and which means new Levels, Enemies and also a lot of new weapons and items which were not in EP1 and EP2. You can also play with Controller and even have more shortcuts as in the console Versions, up to 9 shortcuts instead of 3, which is so much better and much more comfortable. And you can even attach the 9 extra keyboard shortcuts on the controller with a programm. Also, you dont have to play in fornt of your PC Monitor if oyu dont want to, because if you connect your PC or Laptop with a big flatscreen like i did its not only like in the old days without losing its charme, its even better, and still feels as if you play on console because you play with a controller on the TV! For the PC Version (PSO Blue Burst) you just have to download the game from schthack (google schthack website), download maybe takes like 10 minutes, while downloading do register a new account. Then install it and thats it, just plug in a controller, no matter if any PC controller, PS3 or Xbox 360 controller, and the fun begins! 2. The DC Version is prolly a lil bit more complicated, but depends on if you have a modem or a broadband adapter, but both still work. With a BBA adapter its prolly osmething like 10 minutes until you can start to play. You can either play also on Schthack server, or the DC only server named Sylverant. On Schthack you can even play together with PC players, but not with the Blue Burst players, but the PSO EP2 PC Version players (which was released before PSO BB). At the sylverant website you can even download a file which makes everything for you. You download the file, burn it on CD, put in your DC and thats it, it connects automatically with the server and all, and then it says "put the pso game in", you do that, and then you can play! 3. The NGC version isnt hard to setup at all, but it would be better if you have an Broadband Adapter. I think the biggest PSO Gamecube community is also on Schthack, allthough not near as much people as Blue Burst, which has by far the most players. But i will tell you, once you installed and played Blue Burst you dont want and need to think about the NGC and DC versions anymore, because its exactly the same Gameplay wise and all, but only better with much much more content, as i said you can play with controller and even on a big fat screen if you connect your PC or laptop with the TV. What you waiting for? Go and play PSO Blue Burst!!!

Ah man, I had the original Xbox version. I was a part of the Joker clan back when. . The DC version was so well done, but your heart is usually with your first. I have some VHS footage somewhere I really need to look for. Jellen and Zalure helped me train so much. Would have someone cast them on me as I punched boxes to get levels. Overall, I had 8 level 200 characters. Then the hacked weapons and duping started screwing everything up.. 110% in every weapon was unnecessary, and took away from the challenge. And those damn lillies that spit megid on ultimate can kiss my a$$.
