PFLP Ghassan Kanafani, Richard Carleton interview COMPLETE

Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine spokesman Ghassan Kanafani interviewed by Richard Carleton, Beirut 1970. The conflict was fought between the Palestine Liberation Organisation under the leadership of Yasser Arafat, and the Jordanian Armed Forces under the leadership of King Hussein. At its core the civil war sought to determine if Jordan would be ruled by the Palestine Liberation Organisation or the Hashemite Monarchy. The war resulted in the deaths of thousands of people, the vast majority Palestinian. Armed conflict ended with the expulsion of the PLO leadership and thousands of Palestinian fighters to Lebanon. In 1972, Kanafani and his niece were killed in a car bomb set by the Mossad.

This interview just shows how much the ability to control the narrative in a conflict is crucial. The Palestinians didn't succeed in imposing their narrative and as a result they were completely dehumanized in the west and their needs overlooked for decades yet, if we choose to look just at the plain facts, these people were brutally ousted of their land, overnight, to permit the creation of a Jewish state. How is that fair ? I can't begin to fathom why Arabs of all people, had to pay for European crimes toward Jews ? To this day, Palestinians are slauthered, bombarded, persecuted ... simply because they are Palestinians and want a Palestinian state. It is a sinister irony of History that the descendants of Holocaust survivors managed to create another Holocaust.

@@user-yj5sj5nf6sYou are rationalizing the American and European imposed apartheid upon the Palestinians. The invasion and racist control by Israel wrought upon the Palestinian people is apartheid by nature: 5. For 55 years, three generations of Palestinians in the occupied Palestinian territory have grown up under Israeli occupation. About 40 per cent of them are refugees expelled by Israel since 1948 (including their descendants) who fled the violence that accompanied the creation of the State of Israel.2 Most of the residents of Gaza, together with many currently facing forcible transfer across the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, are refugees - originally from Galilee, Haifa, Jaffa, Ramleh and Lydda and the Naqab. The 1967 war displaced most of them anew, destroying and depopulating Palestinian villages and denying refugees return, as in 1947-1949.3 The Palestinians who in 1967 managed to “remain” could not know that, 55 years later, they would still wake up under the yoke of foreign domination, with their rights suspended and, the refugees among them, without concrete prospects of returning to their ancestral lands. 42. In a tragic irony, Palestinians have experienced an entrenching settlercolonialism at a moment in history when the rest of the world was slowly progressing towards decolonization. Worldwide, national resistance movements, symbolically enabled by the United Nations, challenged their colonizers and succeeded in ending their rule. However, in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, Israeli expansionism consolidated into an apartheid regime through the longest occupation in modern history. *** 53. In a settler-colonial context and an apartheid regime, any display of collective identity and (re)claimed sovereignty from the subjugated people represents a threat to the regime itself. On 13 May 2022, Palestinian pallbearers were attacked by Israeli forces while also carrying their national flag during the funeral of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh who had been killed two days earlier (see para. 58). In fact, Palestinian “symbols”, like the Palestinian flag, are systematically attacked and torn down, in public places, during public events, protests and even funerals, with the display of Palestinian national identity being de facto banned. In the occupied Palestinian territory, preventing the Palestinian people from expressing their collective identity in their own land has taken many forms. 54. This is part of a broader and deeper endeavour to “deconstruct and replace” Palestine from the collective imagination through a combination of cultural appropriation and the erasure of key cultural entities.106 The Moroccan Quarter in the Old City of Jerusalem, destroyed at the beginning of the occupation to make space for the Wailing Wall esplanade, is one of the first recorded cases of Palestinian venues destroyed or seized and converted to Israeli cultural sites soon after June 1967. Similarly, attempts to erase the Palestinian character of what is left of Palestinian ancestral land include: the elimination of Palestinian history in East Jerusalem schools,107 the revocation of licences to Palestinian schools not adhering to Israeli curriculum policies108 and the conversion or closure of sites representing Palestinian cultural, political and religious identity.109 56. The exercise of the right to self-determination constitutes the beating heart of a people as a collective and as a polity. Since 1967, to maintain its domination, Israel has systematically carried out human rights violations, including extrajudicial killings, arbitrary detention and imprisonments (including of elected representatives), residency revocations and mass deportations, including of political figures outside the occupied Palestinian territory, among others. These violations have hampered the organic formation and functioning of a cohesive Palestinian political leadership and thus the exercise of the right to self-determination by Palestinians. 58. Humanitarians and journalists are regularly among the victims of the widespread recourse by Israel to lethal force. Lack of accountability remains pervasive. The killing of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, while documenting an Israeli raid on the Jenin refugee camp on 11 May 2022, remains unaccounted for despite numerous investigations concluding that the journalist was hit by Israeli soldiers’ fire.114 59. Israel continues to imprison Palestinian Authority ministers, mayors and teachers, human rights defenders and civil society representatives. Ten members of the Palestinian Legislative Council were reportedly incarcerated in 2020 alone. The practice of mass arbitrary arrests, which includes administrative detention without charge or trial, has been increasingly executed since Palestinians began protesting the illegal construction of the Wall in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.115 Almost 4,500 Palestinians are currently detained. Francesca Albanese, "A/77/356, Situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967," (U.N. COUNTRY REPORTS,Distr.: General 21 September 2022). Compare, "A/78/545: Situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967 - Advance unedited version," (U.N. COUNTRY REPORTS, 20 October 2023, UN Symbol A/78/545)(degradation of Palestinian children under Israeli occupation) International law guarantees to all people equal human status and equal protection. "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood." United Nations, Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), Art. 1. "Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. Furthermore, no distinction shall be made on the basis of the political, jurisdictional or international status of the country or territory to which a person belongs, whether it be independent, trust, non-self-governing or under any other limitation of sovereignty." Id. Art. 2. "Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person." Id. Art. 3. Israel violates every one of the above guarantees by imposing complete control over the Palestinians, subjecting them to hunger and thirst, inflicting indiscriminate violence upon them, detaining them indefinitely, expelling them from their homes and land, and doing so on the basis of race and religion. The U.S. Declaration of Independence indicates that "all men are created equal," its 1st Amendment to the Constitution prohibits any operation of the state on the basis of religion or religious discrimination, and its 5th and 14th Amendments guarantee equal protection of the law. These are fundamental law. Israel does not have a constitution. Israel is an apartheidist state by definition as formalized by the Nationality Bill, wherein national rights are limited to persons of the Jewish faith and racially European: A. The land of Israel is the historical homeland of the Jewish people, in which the State of Israel was established. B. The State of Israel is the national home of the Jewish people, in which it fulfills its *natural, cultural, religious,* and historical right to self-determination. C. The right to exercise national self-determination in the State of Israel is unique to the *Jewish people.* Basic Law: Israel as the Nation-State of the Jewish People, informally known as the Nation-State Bill or the Nationality Bill (07/19/18) The racist intent behind the legislation is supported by the floor debates and representations by the law's authors. Upon presenting the reformed bill, Chairman Ohana stated: "This is the law of all laws. It is the most important law in the history of the State of Israel, which says that everyone has human rights, but national rights in Israel belong only to the Jewish people. That is the founding principle on which the state was established." Minister Yariv Levin, a strong backer of the proposal, called it "Zionism's flagship bill... it will bring order, clarify what is taken for granted, and put Israel back on the right path. A country that is different from all others in one way, that it is the nation-state of the Jewish people." The foundations of Israeli society are white only. Such notions are anathema under international law and should shock the conscience of any resident of a so-called Western democracy. However, the conscience cannot be shocked in any society practicing Jim Crow, committing extrajudicial execution of insular minorities like George Floyd, retaliating against people who complain about injustice, or who have Indian reservations designed to slowly erase the Native people's existence. 6:57

@@Klayhamn And I completely agree that there is no need. But when you said that peace was a better option back then, you don't comprehend that peace meant being annexed by Israel, and that results in an apartheid, because one of the firts laws of Israeli's gov. -Law of Return- states that only Jews or people who convert to Judaism can become Israeli citizens. Were Croatians annexed by Serbians or anything similar? If you have beleived that Israel wants to make a 2 state solution, you need to study more recent history. Study what happened to Yitzhak Rabin who was the first PM of Israel to start peace treaties to make a 2state solution. Also study the historical context of Jewish migration to Palestine, and not only from the post-holocaust rethoric. But from the earliest migration stages which started even before the 1900s. I hope you can study more about the history of Palestine and Israel because comparing it with Yugoslavia just tells me that you don't have a lot of historical context.

@@glbale Absolutely. I think it's no small coincidence that a journalist from a settler-colonial state is instinctively defending another settler-colonial state in this video. This is why you find that colonised people such as the Vietnamese are likely going to show more sympathy for Palestine than a white Australian typically would. Hegemony is a hell of a thing.
