Pfizer, illegal exploitation

£70 million in fines for pharma firms

Overcharged NHS
Phenytoin sodium
Important anti-epilepsy medicine
Pfizer fined £63 million
Flynn fined 6.7 million
NHS costs for rose from 2 million to 50 million in a single year
CMA CEO: “These firms illegally exploited their dominant positions to charge the NHS excessive prices and make more money for themselves - meaning patients and taxpayers lost out”
Fines are the result of an in-depth investigation
Competition and Markets Authority
Pfizer and Flynn charged unfairly high prices for capsules,
for over 4 years,
ultimately paid for by the NHS.
Firms de-branded the drug, previously known as Epanutin,
meaning it was no longer subject to price regulation
and the firms could set prices at their discretion.
Pfizer and Flynn were the dominant suppliers of the drug in the UK at the time,
the NHS had no choice but to pay the inflated final price for this.
Over the 4 years
Pfizer charged prices between 780% and 1,600% higher than previously.
The company supplied the drug to Flynn, which then sold the capsules on to wholesalers and pharmacies at a price between 2,300% and 2,600% higher than the prices previously charged by Pfizer.
This illegal behaviour led to NHS annual costs for phenytoin capsules increasing from £2 million in 2012 to approximately £50 million the following year.
Andrea Coscelli, Chief Executive CMA, Competition and Markets Authority
Phenytoin is an essential drug relied on daily by thousands of people throughout the UK
to prevent life-threatening epileptic seizures.
These firms illegally exploited their dominant positions to charge the NHS excessive prices and make more money for themselves -
meaning patients and taxpayers lost out.
Such behaviour will not be tolerated, and the companies must now face the consequences of their illegal action.

These fines are not really penalties to these companies. They are just seen as normal operating expenses. We need to start seeing some of these executives facing criminal charges and time behind bars.

The "cost of doing business" problem needs to be addressed. Penalties need to be severe enough to force shareholders to exercise their supervisory duty with their employees. Their only interest is in their share price. Freeze their stock, prohibit them from selling it or using it as collateral for a long time, ten years sounds about right to me, and stack the penalties.

Let's not forget about the EpiPen. I have a very serious life-threatening allergy to wasp stings. I almost died twice from anaphylactic shock from 2 separate stings, I was then prescribed the EpiPen. Then later they raised the price to $600 for a 2 pen set, up 500% almost overnight. This was Pfizer and 2 of its subsidiaries. So for several years, I relied on an expired set in my cubard since I could not afford it at those prices. Seeing a wasp in my yard terrified me knowing I may have to use a set that expired years ago. THESE PEOPLE ARE CRIMINALS!

Instantly Responding and Dashing Over and Helping to end the Situation in Seconds, he got Stung almost 20 times, however, he didn't react much, some not even seeming all that more than a Mosquito Bite, While I, had gotten on up the Back of my Shirt, and Stung Once, and had one Heck of a Welt from it! My one sting was way worse than his around 18! I don't react the best to bee stings, but surely would take Quite a bunch to take me down, while my brother could probably get stung hundreds of times. Now those Big Wasps with the White Heads, I knew someone that would barely react to a Yellow Jacket Sting, but one of those White Heads or Whatever gave him a Welt made my look small! I took my health into my own hands for reasons like this, and fast instead when possible. Some of the many benefits of fasting and a lower carb whole food diet on the immune system, blood pressure, blood sugar and anti-aging, all backed up by clinical data: The hunger hormone ghrelin lowers over time with extended fasting and rise from dieting Thymus stem cells are regenerated, which suppresses aging and renews the immune system. Fasting stimulates phagocytosis, the ingestion of bacteria and viruses by the immune system. Blood pressure is quickly and dramatically lowered, which is very important for a good outcome with the current pandemic. Fasting increases nitric oxide, which has manifold postive effects like reducing arterial plaque. Weight loss from fasting only loses10% lean tissue and 90% fat compared to the typical 25% lean tissue and 75% fat lost when calorically restricting for long periods. Blood clotting is reduced and blood clots and arterial plaque are reabsorbed into the body. Vitamin D plasma levels are increased, and vitamin D in turn increases autophagy! Blood sugar and insulin are lowered, allowing white blood cells to move more freely throughout the body and do their job. Ideal blood sugar is around 80. Some viruses activate glycolosis (the release of sugar in the body) and clinically it has been shown that decreasing glucose metabolism in the body weakens the influenza virus. Fasts of several days will not affect short term female fertility and may increase long term fertility especially in women with PCOS. It's absolutely fine for cortisol to be high while fasting, because it produces sugar from fat instead of lean tissue kzread.info/dash/bejne/mZ15psOdqtKrotY.html Does the body prefernetially prefer glucose as a fuel? No, it never uses mainly glucose for fuel and using glucose for fuel is very biochemically damaging! kzread.info/dash/bejne/gJplzNmGktm0qNo.html The hormone Leptin is an immunomodulator that keeps the body from attacking itself and obesity causes leptin resistance. Fasting very quickly reduces leptin resistance and leptin levels and one day of fasting can cut your leptin levels in half and gets your immune system working properly again! Is fasting just the same as caloric restriction? No! Dieting increases the hunger hormone ghrelin while fasting decreases it and has many other health benefits! kzread.info/dash/bejne/pYqgj9CinMu9fMY.html When you move out of MTOR your body shuts down the building blocks of the cell which are used to produce organelles and proteins. This means the mechanisms needed by viruses to replicate are by and large unavailable when you are in a deeply fasted state. It stimulates the AMPK complex and activates autophagy. Autophagy (literally self eating) will cause cells to recycle foreign matter such as viruses and kill cancerous and senescent cells. AMPK does many helpful things in the body including activating the body's antioxidant defenses. Does fasting burn muscle? In most cases no! kzread.info/dash/bejne/ppmFq8OOZtrWYtI.html Fasting can make you gain muscle faster: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z4aBmqmLqtaveco.html Deep ketosis virtually eliminates chronic inflammation in the body. This can offset the life threatening symptoms of viral pneumonia which effectively kills you through inflammation. This also creates BHB ketones in your body, which also help your immune system and anti-oxidative system, especially in the brain. Ketones also provide an additional energy source during infection, which is critical when trying to fight off a bug. In fact you can have as much as three times the total energy available in your blood when you are in deep ketosis, or even more. It increases mitochondrial function and repairs mitichondrial DNA, leading to improved ATP production and oxygen efficiency and thereby making cells better able to fight off infection. Increased mitochondrial function also has the added benefit of increasing your metabolism and cancer prevention! Fasts from 36-96 h actually INCREASE metabolic rate! kzread.info/dash/bejne/dJl3wcmCgpXAYZc.html Your body releases interferon which is also triggered by the body during viral attacks to shut down the replication ability of the surrounding cells and stop infections. After 72 hours or more fasted, your body actually recycles large numbers of immune bodies and creates new ones, rejuvenating your entire system. When you fast, this stimulates apoptosis in senescent or genetically damaged cells. This kills these cells off completely. Senescent cells are responsible for the effects of aging and are the root cause of the development of cancer. If it were possible to destroy them all it would completely stop aging and cancer. That is not possible but fasting can help limit these effects by killing off many of the affected cells and limiting the future effects of aging. Fasting also releases BDNF and NGF in the blood which stimulates new nerve and brain cell growth, helping a great deal with diseases like MS, peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimers. In fact, the biochemical regulator of BDNF production is beta-hydroxybutyrate, which is the same ketone the body produces to nourish the brain while fasting. Autophagy induced by fasting even helps hair regrow. What breaks a fast? kzread.info/dash/bejne/aZWGrtV8oNvfY9I.html Dieters losing weight through intermittent fasting show greater reduction in waist size and increase in insulin sensitivity for the same weight lost and alternate day fasters were shown to lose fat while gaining muscle at the same time over a six month period. Does fasting lower testosterone? No, it raises it and builds muscle! kzread.info/dash/bejne/mH6JpteccrrcZNY.html Fasting has been shown to increase bone marrow volume by 10% and levels of carnosine in the body in as little as a few weeks. Fasting also increases telomere length, negating some of the effects of aging at a cellular level. Eating one meal a day can bring most of these benefits to a lesser degree, and adding a few entire days off from eating per week will have even more effect especially when starting to feel poorly. Exogenous ketones can aid with fasting, making it easier in healthy people and allowing some people with specific issues to fast in spite of them without worrying as much about hypoglycemia. Children, pregnant or nursing women should not fast for periods longer than 16 hours. People with pancreatic tumors or certain forms of hypoglycemia generally cannot fast at all. Type 1 diabetics can also fast but it is more complicated and should be approached with caution as it could lead to ketoacidosis. Those with Addison's disease may also be unable to fast without liberal use of exogenous ketones, depending on severity. If you experience extreme symptoms of some kind, especially dizziness then simply break the fast and seek advice. My brother brought his family down to Disneyland in California a few years ago. Before he left Canada on the trip they called the resort to make sure they had a clinic where his son could have his much needed, regular injection. He was told no problem if he brought the medication along with the prescription and a doctor's note. The day after they arrived he took his son to the clinic for his injection. Upon arriving he was told they could not give the injection because he was Canadian and there was nothing they could do about it. He immediately called me as I was living in San Diego at the time. He was desperate to get his son the medication. I called around and not a single clinic in San Diego would agree to give him the shot. I called the hospital emergency room and they said no problem. Bring him in, and they would dispense the medication...for only $3,000 USD. I thought no way. I called my Mexican friend and asked him if there was a pharmacy in Tijuana that could do it. He texted me the address to a pharmacy a few minutes later. I called my brother, and they packed their bags and drove down to San Diego immediately. I lived only a couple of miles from the border. As soon as they arrived we drove across the border to the pharmacy where his son got his shot for a whopping $5. Which reminds me, I subsequently found there is a children's hospital in TJ that was founded in the '90's as a 2,000 square foot day clinic for children up to the age of 16. By the time I went down to visit and do a story on them it had grown to over 50,000 sq ft. It is called the "Children's Hospital of the Californias." They take any child no questions asked. At the time the cost for a visit with a regular MD was $15. If you had to see a specialist the cost was $18. If you could not afford even that then the visit was free. The kids can come from anywhere, any country. No strings attached. The health and welfare of children comes before nationality or money. Now that is the way to run a health care system. Incidentally the inspiration for the original clinic came from a Canadian nurse who was in San Diego and visited TJ where she saw the poverty and lack of a clinic for children. She went back to her university in Calgary and inspired them to do a feasibility study on the need for the clinic. She went back to San Diego armed with the study and raised the money through donations to build the clinic. Much of the staff are all volunteers as are most of the doctors with many of them actually coming down from San Diego to donate their time. If you are looking for a great charity to donate to...they are it.

Never give the government all the power to give or deny medicines because in an authoritarian system, they would only allow those with a good social credit score to get their meds. Dr. Cambell, I'm a retired Marine, with thirty plus years of multiple sclerosis. I got an anthrax vaccine, going to the gulf in 1989, lost my vision, partial paralysis, diagnosed with ms in 91, having gotten most of my vision back, minimized the muscle paralysis and spasms, stayed in the Marines until medically retired in 97, no longer able to tolerate heat. I've been prescribed about a dozen medications over the thirty plus years, got 16 plus years of interferons, 14 years, 157 monoclonal antibody infusions, monthly, until last December. With that history, I see this deliberate overpricing as criminal, in every way. It's definitely deliberate, it's done on the assumption it won't be noticed, and it's aimed at the government, assuming government workers won't be in position to notice the difference, or care should they notice. Wriggley still make gum, what was once two for a penny, now probably cost a dime, it's never been out of production, and they still make a profit, or they'd quit. They charge what the market will bear, which probably isn't much different over the century plus, they've made it for a profit. I'm simply saying we as customers, don't let them do as Pfizer has done, and only because the party paying, isn't receiving, and can't be expected to realize the act of theft, they can even consider doing so, in hopes of literally stealing government money. They should be completely broken, put out of business, and their assets taken, sold off and the money returned to the "taxpayers". Pfizer is accustomed to presuming they can charge what they want, and is well accustomed to being caught, charged, fined, and having to pay, so it clearly is profitable when they do get away with it. Were it me, I'd crush their nuts in a vise, and make them run away.

Thankfully many issues can be solved by fasting and eliminate your need for medicines and boost your immune system through the roof! No, it raises it and builds muscle! kzread.info/dash/bejne/mH6JpteccrrcZNY.html Fasting reverses metabolic syndrome, which is tightly correlated to Chronic Fatiguque Syndrome, high blood pressurecancer and many other chronic diseases. Fasting has been shown to increase bone marrow volume by 10% and levels of carnosine in the body in as little as a few weeks. I am fortunate to live in Japan, where the government sets reasonable prices on all medications (and indeed, all medical treatments). The treatment I've gotten here is every bit as good as what I received in the US, and the cost for national healthcare is a fraction of what I was paying for private insurance in the states.

Dr Campbell, I just checked for the price of phenytoin sodium in India. There are at least two dozen manufacturers, including Pfizer selling it, in the form of capsule, tablet or injection. And the price for one dose typically ranges from UK£ 0.10 to 0.25 p. So the question is whether the company could have sold this drug at such high prices to public health service without the collusion of people at the health services responsible for procuring medicines? A company seeking to maximise it's profits, at the cost of the public and the exchequer is not surprising but sad. But the health regulators sacrificing the public whom they are entrusted to protect and allowing price gouging is much more serious.

One would think that the NHS should not be so gullible so it certainly looks like some collusion or bribes were going on. We now know that criminology does exist withing the medical world. Look what happenend at the Tavistock clinic for instance.

@Barun Mitra. You're exactly right, and it reminds me of the enormous gullibility and compliance to pharmaceuticals and doctors' orders in the British population, including the managers of the NHS, ignoring to think for themselves, realistically. As a Dutch born, I've witnessed an opportunistic attitude in British people, when they can't make ends meet almost. Or think they can't. Priorities? Moral values? Britain's folks seem to have fallen into a deplorable state of complacency🤔🤔

I could not agree more! The real story here is why the hell is the money pit, commonly called the NHS, allowing the nations pants to be pulled down. Nobody is forcing them to buy from a well known corrupt set of scammers!!

I have to say I am so angry about this 😡. This is just criminal behaviour and the people involved need to be held accountable and PROSECUTED for what they are doing. Does anyone honestly think this is the only case of being over charged !! Thanks John for highlighting this and I couldn’t agree more about your comment concerning the UK government making its own drugs, unfortunately the politicians will have zero interest in doing so, even though it could save the NHS Billions of £££££££££££.

This price gouging is totally immoral! It’s profiteering and they should be criminally charged and prosecuted. What’s with all this crime that is not challenged at all. It’s seems money and profit is above the law!

Why do we as people face prison when committing such fraud but the board members of private companies do not? Honestly I'm getting so very tired of this. If we made board members legally liable for things and threw them in prison then all of this nonsense would stop overnight. As for making generics here, well we should but we also need to make the precursor chemicals here instead of shipping them in from China. I know our government is now looking to get precursors from India but this is something we absolutely should be doing ourselves. Yes it will cost slightly more to manufacture these precursors on our own soil, but some things are worth paying extra and having a good supply of these medications seems like a simple matter of national security.

Having Epilepsy myself this is another example of big pharmaceutical companies appalling behaviour!! This is why we can never get prefered same brand of our Epilepsy meds and often get whatever is available...this can cause seizures to worsen as some of us do not tolerate other types . Thanks for posting this

I hope these big pharma's can get stripped of their authoritarian rule, and their licenses and held accountable, and pay out big bucks for all the damage they caused.
