PFD Full Box Response - L23, P20, Q43, B1, L5, E13, M50, M27, E11 & R1

Philadelphia Fire Department Ladder 23, Pipeline 20, Squrt 43, using spare Squrt 257, Battalion 1, Ladder 5, Engine 13, Medic 50, Medic 27, Engine 11, and Rescue 1 responding and arriving on location of a subway box assignment on the 1600 block of John F Kennedy Blvd. I believe Medic 27 was responding for a medical assignment with Ladder 9 at the same location. Ladder 23 is a 1998 ALF and Pipeline 20 is a 2007 ALF. They are housed together, along with Medic 1, at 10th and Cherry Streets in Chinatown. Squrt 257 is a 1998 ALF 54' (EX-Squrt 243, EX-Squrt 55, EX-Squrt 8). Squrt 43 normally runs an identical 1998 ALF 54' (EX-Squrt 57) and is housed with Ladder 9, Medic 7, and ES 3 at 21st and Market Streets in Center City. Battalion 1 is a 2014 Chevy Tahoe. Ladder 5 is a 2007 ALF (EX-Ladder 1). They are housed together, along with Medic 35, at Broad and Fitzwater Streets in South Philadelphia. Engine 13 is a 2012 KME. Medic 50 is a 2010 Ford/Horton (EX-Medic 13). They are housed together, along with Air Unit 1, at 16th & Parrish Streets in Francisville. Medic 27 is a 2015 International TerraStar/Horton and is housed with Engine 10 and ES 6 at 12th and Reed Streets in South Philadelphia. Engine 11 is a 2003 ALF (EX-Pipeline 40) and is housed with Medic 21 at 6th and South Streets in Queen Village. Rescue 1 is a 2002 KME and is housed with Engine 29, Medic 15, Rescue 1A, and Collapse Unit 1 at 4th Street and Girard Avenue in Northern Liberties.

  • @xheralt

    IIRC a Pipeline carries more large diameter hose and has a pump tuned for inline supply operations (high volume versus high pressure), as opposed to being the frontline attack. It can still serve as such, just not as well.

    Pipeline is the PFD's radio designation for an engine that carries extra lengths of LDH and a manifold.

    I guess every one else is more important then the fire units responding with lights, sirens and horns!? In some cases the vehicles were unwilling or unable to go through red lights. That is why all major/large cities in the USA need Opticom or some other traffic light control devise. It dose really make life safer for every one. There will still be drivers that do the wrong things. Still though a traffic control system on ever stop light in the city and on every police , fire and medical unit in the city will help a lot. St. Paul and Minneapolis MN. have Opticom and it makes things safer for them. Even most of the suburbs use that system and it helps to quicken response times by giving the emergency vehicle the green light and all others a red light.

  • @amott919

    Yes. Busier units get new trucks, and their old one gets handed down to another unit. For example, Medic 13 used to have the 2010 Ford seen in this video, but when they got a new unit in 2015, the 2010 Ford was reassigned to Medic 50.

    Hey, Aaron. Great Video! Could you explain me what a "Full Box Response" is?

  • @amott919

    @amott919

    Keano Neumann Thanks! I titled this "Full Box Response" because it was a box assignment (structure/other type reported fire) in this case it was reported to be a passenger train underground. I say full box response because it was the full box (every unit on the assignment) responding. I think I missed pne chief but everything else was responding in this video.

    Ok, thanks so far. Can I assume that the city is split into boxes? So that all units in the box are responed to the fire?

  • @amott919

    Keano Neumann No. The term box comes from "fire boxes" that used to be on the street that people would pull if there was a fire. They still use the terminology eventhough the fire boxes are no longer around. A dispatch for this would be, for example, "Box 4377, Aramingo Avenue and Cambria Street, fire is reported at.... reported to be.... following companies will respond...."

    I believe in New York now there's a law that says fire trucks and ambulances can run full blast plowing threw a pack of cars and keep going if you don't move, because people in that state are sooo stupid that they don't know how to move out of the way, it's sad what new york is now days, emergency services vehicle's have to have a law that says they can run you down if you don't get out of the way and women can kill there own kids after there born, it's truly sad, what has this world come to? :(

    I think the differences in how US fire departments and UK fire services respond are quite marked. In the U.K. fire appliance drivers are taught not to antagonise other road users at red lights. They tend to come up behind them, turn the sirens off and wait for the lights to change to green before turning the noise back on. After all, motorists that have gone through a red light to get out of a 999 responding vehicle have been fined, believe it or not - such is the bureaucratic ridiculousness of my country (I'm British!) Also, although our emergency drivers are allowed to go through red lights, if they cause an accident, or cause some other driver to crash, then they're likely to get the sack and possibly prosecuted, such is the "where there's blame there's a claim" culture poisoning this country. So in one way I suppose the patient, courteous British approach has to be admired, as in all honesty it's their only option. Now in the US you have to admire the way crews like the ones in this clip don't give a shit about any of that UK nonsense! They make as much noise as possible and more or less barge their through. Which in these huge congested cities is really their only option. As much as I've got the utmost respect for UK firefighters, and in fact all emergency responders, personally I prefer the US model!!! Not only do they arrive on-scene as quickly as possible, it also makes for better videos! So keep it up, guys. And blast them dozy f**kers out the way!
