Pfaff 1147 Tipmatic-needle hits- timing is off- thread gap is off. It was “jacked up” (video 278)

If you’re going to try to fix your own machine, know your limitations. Don’t turn every screw you see and don’t lose any screws.
When you finally give up and take it to the professional, be sure to tell him or her what you’ve done.
They may have mercy on you, they may not.

I was able to fix a thread jam but then the zigzag was skipping stitches but I had no idea where to start with the timing adjustments. At least now I have a starting point. Thanks so much! It costs me $200 every time I have to take my Pfaff quilt expression 2046 into the shop.

I always suspect an improper needle application before timing. If you’re sewing on a woven fabric and you’re skipping stitches, get the needle that was designed to cure that: Schmetz S. T. R. E. T. C. H. Needle If the needle is made by singer, it will be the 2045. Even if the needle is bent or blunt, it will cause skipping. If your shop charges you $200 to set the timing, I would go elsewhere. (Assuming that there’s somewhere else to go) 😎

I think this is the issue with my machine. At the moment in its middle position the needle hits the metal hook. There isn’t a sewing machine repair in the town I live in. Is this something I should ship my machine out for or can I attempt this myself?

Make sure you don’t have a bent needle or one that is incorrectly installed. A large sized needle can cause an issue as well. Setting the timing can be extra tricky on that model, if you loosen the set screws on the hook and allow the hook drive shaft to move around at all. I have fixed them for customers right after they got them back from a repair center and was told, “They did their best, but it’s just not 100 percent correct.” What? Yes, it happens. Check the needle. Hopefully that’s the issue.

@@randyyoursewingmachineman9954 thank you for the feedback! The needle was bent and we replaced it with an appropriate sized needle but that could be the case. I’m hesitant to touch anytime with timing but I wasn’t sure if the positioning finger could be set without messing with those screws.

@@kristenrange6825 the two position brackets screws can be loosened and the bracket can be moved left and right, forward and back, without endangering any other settings. It’s a simple adjustment, just don’t loosen the screws too much. You can “center” the bobbin case base so that the needle doesn’t strike the edges when zig zagging. You can also move the bracket forward and back so that only half of the tip is in the base opening. If it’s too tight, the thread can’t slip through. If it’s too loose (not in deep enough) the base will spin out.

@@robotbuster1487 the Tipmatic series are by and large a reliable group of Paff machines. Early on, they had bad motor issues, and bad nylon gear issues. If you have one that didn’t have the issues, it’s one of the good ones. If your machine had either of those problems, you’re probably not a fan. I service quite a few of them and mostly it’s a happy ending. That’s because I vet the machine before the customer brings it in by asking questions about its possible problems. I would never buy one online, because it’s not possible to know its problems. Without a first hand inspection, I would skip it.
