Good think Nickel Sulfate wasn't the winner. Copper Sulfate is used to kill tree roots that have grown into pipes, and it's also used with pool supplies. It's dirt cheap and available all over the place.

copper sulfate dissolved with salt can be used for etching aluminum, and to stop the etching reaction you can use dissolved soda crystals (i.e. sodium carbonate). So perhaps the same could be used for this as well?
