해발 4,810미터의 알프스 최고봉, 만년설의 신비로운 땅, ‘오뜨 사브와’ (Haute-Savoie) 도에 위치한 ‘몽블랑’ 자락에 위치한 ‘샤모니’는 산악 스포츠의 천국으로 연중 내내 관광객들의 발길이 끊이지 않는다. 1924년 제1회 동계 올림픽이 개최된 이후 겨울철 스키는 물론이고, 등산, 패러 글라이딩, 래프팅, 암벽 타기 등 여름 스포츠로도 각광을 받는 곳이며, 알프스 산의 웅대한 자연 경관을 감상하기에 최적의 장소이다.
제네바의 부유한 학자 ‘소쉬르’ (Horave-Benedict de Saussure 1740-1799)가 1760년 ‘몽블랑’ 정복에 거액의 상금을 걸으면서 수많은 사람들이 시도를 하였고, 드디어 1786년 8월 8일 처음으로 ‘몽블랑’을 정복한 ‘미셸 빠까흐’ (Michel Paccard) 박사와 등반 가이드 ‘작크 발마’ (Jacques Balmat 1762-1834)의 동상이 ‘샤모니’ 시내에서 ‘몽블랑’을 손가락으로 가리키고 있다.
몽땅베르(Montenvers)와 메르 드 글라스(Mer de Glace 얼음 바다)
빨간 산악열차는 1909년 개통하여 큰 성공을 거두었고 지금도 꾸준히 인기를 얻고 있다. ‘샤모니’ 계곡의 절경을 구경하며 구불구불 경사진 길을 약 20분 정도 여행하면 해발 1,913m의 ‘몽땅베르’에 도착한다.

여기서 다시 톱니궤도차를 5분 정도 타고 빙벽을 지나 내려가서 550 계단을 내려가면 길이 7km, 폭 2km, 두께 200m의 프랑스 최대의 빙하에 뚫은 ‘얼음바다 동굴’(Grotte de la mer de Glace) 안으로 들어가서 수억만년의 빙하를 감상할 수 있다.
1741년 영국인 탐험가 ‘윌리엄’(William Windham)과 ‘리처드’(Richard Pococke)가 처음 발견하면서 수많은 등반가들에 의하여 유명해진다. 이 빙하의 근원이 되는 거대한 얼음 산 ‘그랑 조라스’(Grands Jorasses, 4205m)와 ‘드루’(Drus, 3754m) 봉우리 앞에서 경외심이 든다.

Montenvers and the Mer de Glace ice sea
