PetSmart Top Fin Essentials 37 Gallon Aquarium Kit Review

This is a review of my Top Fin Essentials 37 Gallon Aquarium Kit from PetSmart. I get into detail about the kit itself including contents, modifications I did to the tank as well as the stand I chose for it. I made a mistake and said my light was on for 10 hours (11am-11pm), I meant 11am-9pm. Also, the tank has a basic black background installed on it. I'll include some links to where I bought everything from. The kit also comes with a net and a water test vial that I forgot to mention. Thanks for watching!

Aqua Culture 20/29 Gallon Aquarium Stand:

I modified the aquarium hood with a hand saw and sand paper to smooth the edges. I used two 2 X 6's to support the inside with gloss black spray paint. I also used a 24 in X 24 in pre-cut piece of plywood to support the back, all of which I screwed in with 1.5 inch wood screws after drilling pilot holes. I used 1 X 6 to make two shelves with angle iron and 0.5 in wood screws.
The power strip I used (best deal I could find, but you could use any one):

@@alexdentice5835 but you have to factor all the fish he’s adding at their maximum size. He’s got easily 20-30 inches of fish from what he mentioned. That’s approaching maximum capacity. I wouldn’t push it much further than that. This tank is big, big not that big, and the space is vertical not horizontal. Fish can begin to get territorial when bunched together too tightly which will stress them out and/or cause aggression.

    2 жыл бұрын

I don’t have the aquarium anymore. But I used to do water changes every two weeks or so. It all depends on how much you do. You can do 10% every week, 25% every two weeks, etc. There’s a trade off for both, whether having to do less water more frequently or more water less frequently (doing them more frequently is better for the health of the aquarium.) I used some double sided adhesive to keep the power strip attached and it did the job and never fell.

I mean you can get a fairly inexpensive hand saw at a hardware store that can cut the hood. I’d say if you kept a lower stock of fish or kept fish that didn’t produce too much waste you should be fine with the stock filter. I’d just keep up on the water changes a bit more frequently, that’s all.

How many fishes can you add to this 37 gallon tank? I wanted to add at least 5 or 6 fancy gold fishes in there.

  • @jerminator0688

    @jerminator0688

    2 жыл бұрын

You can add 1 inch of fish per gallon of water. That is the standard stocking guidelines for any tank. So, for instance, this is a 37 gallon tank, so you can have 37 inches worth of fish in this tank. But you have to take into consideration their maximum size when they are full grown, not their size when you first get them. For example, a molly might grow to be 3 inches. But when you buy them at the store they might be young and only measure 1 inch. So technically at 3 inches full grown you can only have 12 mollys in the tank. With goldfish you have to be careful. Generally they can grow pretty large (sometimes 6 inches.) I wouldn’t recommend goldfish in a tank like this. You need something much larger, like a 40 breeder or above. It would work temporarily while they were smaller, but eventually you would need to upgrade the tank or re-home them as they grew larger. Hope this helps.

It would be up to you to test it out though. But Ive had success with plants with regular LED lights before. I guess it all depends on the type of plant. Some are low light, others need better lighting setups.

You will need a plant-specific full-spectrum LED light to sustain live plants. Most of these included lights are just pure white LEDs and lack the red and blue light wavelengths that plants need for photosynthesis. 30 watts or more to penetrate that depth of water.

Have you ever had problems with the stand yet?

I’ll be honest with you. I rehomed the fish shortly after this video and sold the stand. Never kept in contact with the person I sold it to. It was pretty solid, so I’d imagine it couldn’t have given any issues.

The PetSmart website says “out of stock online” and “in store only.” So it seems like maybe not, but maybe there’s some stores with the kit leftover. There’s no way to know for sure without calling around.

@@jerminator0688 i was looking at getting a top fin 55 gal tank, but theres also a aqueon 55 gal tank i can get for about the same price. Ive had my aqueon tank for about 8 years now. And i still have it and it still has fish in it. So i can trust aqueon

@@cheesewonton7263 I’m not a huge fan of 55 gallon tanks. They’re very tall and narrow. I prefer maybe a 40 breeder or a 75 gallon. 55s are decent but I like my tanks wider personally vs taller. This 37 gallon is super tall, like a mini 55 almost.
