Pets.com - The Rapid Rise and Fall
*Note: This video was completed in August of 2020, but unreleased until May of 2024 as part of my 7 years on KZread celebration.
Pets.com was a short-lived, online pet supplies retailer, most known for its spokespuppet. This video highlights why it grew so large and then crumbled, all within about two years.

Yeah they were definitely ahead of their time. I was a teen on the internet then and internet shopping was basically non existent in every family I knew.... Why the HECK buy pet food from a website when every store sells it, pet stores were not hard to find, and we already go to the store anyways. Getting pet food and supplies shipped just felt so weird when internet purchases were already so small, and shipping wasn't cheap anyways.

Speaking of shipping costs of heavy items; It's absolutely crazy how international shipping progressed in affordability and speed over the years. I remember waiting for three months for an online purchase to reach me (from the other side of the planet) with crazy shipping prices (usually more costly than the product itself) to now shipping costing free or next to nothing, and the waiting time is only a week. Heck, I recently bought a large bag of flour (a little over 20 pounds) that was shipped to me from over 600 miles away with free shipping. The item was cheaper than in stores (by a large margin), _and_ it arrived in 2 or 3 days! What a time to be alive.
@volvo09
22 күн бұрын
Yeah shipping is crazy cheap these days! It was nothing like it is now "back then". Nobody would ship something you can get from the grocery store or the local pet store, it was just stupidly expensive, and weight mattered much more than it does now.
@humb1s3rvant
21 күн бұрын
It depends highly on the country and their import taxes, commonality of the product and not necessarily weight. For example I wanted a Radio Flyer wagon for my boys in Morocco. It would cost twice as much to ship it here from the US as to buy it there. It all depends on location and product.

I remember them, and remember thinking how cool of an idea it seemed at the time. But as a consumer it just never really made any sense to use them. As far as I remember, they just offered the same sort of stock that you could get from a 5 minute drive to Walmart. And, at that time, Walmart's prices were still fairly low; so paying for shipping and waiting 2-3 weeks for the same pet supplies you could just buy at a store didn't make sense. As for the high cost of technology- If you look at how much money Amazon has invested into their logistics technology; that's the kind of pricetag that Pets was looking at. Not just the cost of hosting a website and managing orders; but the technology cost of doing inventory digitally and sorting things for shipping everywhere in the US to a large marketshare was insanely high for that time period. Could you imagine running a company like modern day Amazon on something akin to a Windows 98 machine?

Always loved their commercials. Good to see how it blew up.
I remember these guys. I think I bought one or two things but in 2000 folks were sill very apprehensive of online shopping. early on folks were cool buying tech and media but the further you got from that the more folks were like I dunno about this.
@Grimhart89
22 күн бұрын
I agree people were apprehensive of online shopping, but I don't see any logic to your reason. What kind of tech and media were people buying online in 2000? Furthermore, why would people be less apprehensive about spending far more money on something that's more expensive and arguably more important...? That just doesn't make much sense.
Before watching this vid, I remember a few things about the puppet. It singing a Chicago song really off key, later seeing it in BAR-NONE injury law or car insurance commercials, and it being dissed by Triumph The Insult Comic dog on Conan with a "I'll Be Watching You" by Sting parody.
“‘Chewy’ why they’re so successful” coming soon, I hope.🤞🏻

I think what Chewy's doing right is offering a wider variety of products than you can find in a pet store. I have a pet hamster, as you can tell by my username. If you go to a pet store, small animals products are treated like an afterthought. There will just be a small section, and a very small selection. You'll have just a couple choices if you're looking for food or toys. Chewy, meanwhile, has hundreds of small animal products available.

Superbowl addendum: That spokes puppet was later seen in an E-Trade describing tech bubble burst.

Can you do a video on the rise and fall of Ruby Tuesday? They were everywhere then mostly nowhere. Thank you for all your content Company Man, God bless you
Omg the sock puppet! As a kid I was obsessed with the commercials because of that cute little puppet. 😊
I remember the TV commercials, but I didn't remember that it was that far back. I wasn't even using the internet much at all by that point, and definitely wasn't about to start buying stuff from it. I probably made my first online purchase from eBay in about 2003. I also remember the Bar-None commercials, but I don't think it ever occurred to me that it was the same puppet. I wonder what year that was.
Back in 2000, I'm pretty sure that this was also the time when the media was writing scare stories about buying things online. My parents only bought CDs online, and only then if they werent available to buy in bricks and mortar stores. It was far too early for our family to be buying *supplies* online, and I suspect it was for most people.
This is my favorite episode because it's an excuse to watch stock footage of cute animals.
That bar none aside was really well done. Man, they got a DEAL on that puppet for 125k.
Did you ever do a video on chewy because that seems like a good video to do
I recall those early days of e-commerce going back decades ago . . . Venture capitalists were pouring millions into web startup companies, where the mentality was: _Set up a company website, and watch the money roll in on the return of investment._ Even the people running the web startups thought that having a website equated to financial gains. But, they lacked business sensibilities of supply chains, logistics, distribution, and customer support. The *smoke and mirrors* business models of web businesses, or e-commerce, came crashing down in 2001; often referred to as the _bubble burst._
this was b4 my time but these commercials felt nostalgic for some reason. say spokespuppet with ur chest company man!
I had no idea that Michael Ian Black did the voice of the puppet. That is hilarious.

Fascinating!
Funnily enough, I first saw the spokespuppet on a 1-800-BAR-NONE commercial and didn't even realize he had been associated with a completely different product. It's really amusing to me that they just sold the rights to the character so he could keep representing a company and, for lack of a better term, stay employed.
I do definitely remember the commercials. as a californian, in the bay area even, their commercials may have run more often in their local area idk. But we only had one cat at the time, and he had very simple needs, so my parents didn't order from them. I have nothing but good things to say about Chewy though.

Didn’t know Michael Ian Black was the voice… that’s wild. You should definitely do one on Chewy. Best e-commerce business on the planet in my opinion. In a world where “customer-obsessed” is a commonly thrown around buzzword, they actually back it up.
I remember this store. I remember thinking why would anyone have their pet food shipped in when I can go to the store for about the same price? Guess that answers that.
This and petsovernight from gta 3 keeps getting mixed up in my brain but makes sense because gta 3 was parodying that bubble at the time. Took me a while to realize it.
