In the world of college tennis, one thing remains constant each & every season: Hard work! And I don't just mean hard work in practice, I mean hard work when it counts (on the match court). In some cases, team head to heads are often decided by just a single match in the lineup. In NCAA, there are 3 doubles matches (consisting of 1 overall point towards a team for the team that wins 2/3 doubles matches) & 6 singles matches (each worth 1 individual team point towards the final result). Most times, a winning team can be decided by a hard-battling singles match that can go into the deciding set & on this day at UH, every match mattered!
In 2017, the University of San Diego ventured across the pond to the University of Hawaii at Manoa for an epic women's tennis clash! Multiple matches went the distance & it came down to key matches within the lineup to decide a winner. One of those key matches was the #2 Singles position, where two hard hitting freshman student athletes were ones to look out for. Repping the Rainbow Warrior green was Petra Melounova & sporting Toreros blue was Gemma Garcia. Petra hailed from the Czech Republic & Gemma from Spain. Both women were ranked highly within their country (before college) & both sported very fascinating game styles. Petra would rip away yet use craftiness at clever times while Gemma would serve right-handed & play the rest of her game with her left hand. On paper, & you'll soon see on court, this proved to be not just an intriguing matchup but maybe the most entertaining match of the day! And yes, this match was one of the last matches to finish that afternoon, making the #2 Singles a key match to either team's regular season victory!
