1955 - probably my first trip through Petoskey. At this moment, i am about 20 miles from Petosky loving the Lake Michigan coast.

I'm 4th generation of my family born in Charlevoix. 1958, a little over a month after the Lions traded away Bobby Layne. Our parents relocated us to Traverse City in 1960. Although I now make my home in Wisconsin, roots that deep are never completely severed. Northwest Lower Michigan will always be first home.

Really have to hand it to the people there. Those winters are over the top brutal. It’s an amazing that people ever settled there to be honest. I have lived 3 back to back years in western MT, and that was enough for me. I would much rather have a HOT 3-4 months a year, than 6-7 months of Snow and Ice. Shut inside and bored to death. I am telling you now most people have mental problems in those places. I cannot deal with that much Cold. Everything is sooooo expensive as well.

Petoskey is not Big Sky country. Winters in Petoskey are not what they used to be in the before early oughts. Little Travers Bay hasn't frozen over the past three years. You can almost measure the amount of snow in flakes. It sounds like you are a snowbird who never wants to fly north. And if you are complaining about how expensive Petoskey is, tell your buddies not to move there. They are the reason I can't bear the thought of moving back. As far as I'm concerned Petoskey has changed so much that it is a ruined gem. Sure there were always resorters (ie fudgies) many of whom thought they owned the town while they were there. Now there is a Walmart's on an 80 that my dad use to farm.

That Saks store is interesting. I haven't found a record of it in a quick glance at the company records. The closest Saks at that time seems to be over in Ann Arbor, so this may have been a seasonal "resort shop" associated with the Ann Arbor Saks University Shop.

I can't recall if it was affiliated with Ann Arbor. My recollection, most of these summer shops were affiliated with Florida shops, like Ft. Lauderdale.

Which ski resorts was that? I grew up at Walloon then we moved to Nubs. I’m trying to remember the run layouts.

both sets of grandparents moved to boyne city in 1910. one worked 50 years at the local tannery, the other opened shop as a harness maker, followed by hand crafted leather attire and auto parts. I skied at both Avalanche and Boyne City in those days. Avalanche pass was $ 10/year and Boyne Mountain $ 50/year. parents had a ski shop in petoskey for a few winters.

my parents took me there many times. it was next to Petoskey House Furnishings on Bay View Road. I imagine the road names may have changed and unsure if Petoskey House Furnishings is still in business.

@@AtwoodsHistory Thank you. I don't recall if the furniture place was still in business when I was last in the area so I'll have to keep my eyes peeled next time I'm up that way and find myself on Bay View Road. There was a successor at one point, called The Bob-In Again that I noticed had closed down awhile back, but the landscape and building shape were not a match for the original.

Petoskey had several shops that were only open in the summer as their owners had a Florida and a Petoskey shop. I.e. summer shops. The wealth of the country had summer homes all around Little Traverse Bay. Also, their Fort Lauderdale shop had the words "Petoskey" on it.

Tell me about it. I get lost sometimes thinking I know where I'm going and I grew up there until I moved to south MI in 1973. I miss the trees.
