Have a look at truck and dog or quad dog if you like this. It s the way we roll in Australia and Canada too I believe.

Hi Broat, depends on the "bridge laws" of each State. Bridge refers to the various distances between all the various axles. Here in WA, if you have this very long tongue between the truck and the "pup trailer", you spread out the load such that you can have about 12 yards of dirt on the truck and an additional 10 or 12 yards on the pup. Some years ago, the pup trailers were just 2 axles, then 3, and now 4 axles; the more axles, the more the loads is distributed and the more you can haul. In OR, they will have a semi-truck with a 5th wheel trailer, hitched to a second long trailer, then hitched to a third long trailer. You guessed it, you cannot back this rig up! The laws vary a lot from State-to-State.

So having the long tongue means you will be over the bridge before the trailer (bridge weight limit)thus allowing you to haul more material at a time. For us over here in Germany the bridge limitts are the total truck weight with trailer and not how much at one time.....even if it is a short bridge and the tractor is over bridge before trailer you would still get a fine......if your total weight truck, trailer and material exceeds the limit on the bridge then your busted........unless you get a special permit you are sol...thanks for the info..... Ps Over here three axel trucks are allowed26000kg four axel trucks are allowed a total of 32000 kg and a five axle or more has a limit of 40000kg.anything over that(oversized loads and you need a special permit and a police escort with a certain time frame that you can drive (big bucks)

It's not just about bridges, it's about the road surface too. The key here is Load Concentration. Allowing a longer section of roadway to share the stress from the axles prevents damage to the asphalt mat. If you eliminated the tongue completely you would impart the same combined PSI forces to the roadway, but those forces would comparatively be highly concentrated in too short of a distance thus damaging the roadway. It's not just about the Number of axles, but axle spacing/spread as well--especially important when you consider the declining transport infrastructure in the U.S. We can't afford to break up our roads any more! Thanks for checking out our videos

Over here they (Germans) think that it is the weight ,period, damages roads....whether the axals are far appart or not.......we (Germany) only have special trailers that you can ajust the lenth......the trailer and not the axels.......and then you need a special permit if your rig is over a certain lenght.... if you do have over sized and weight loads then the Germans think the heavier you are the more axels you need So anything over a certain length you need special permits thus most tractor trailers don't have more than 5 axels........6 or more axels are allowed just as long as you don't exceed the 40 ton limit.....more axels= more weight= less material you can haul

Same reason with superdump's trailing axle? But I think this loooong tow bar do make sense, the trailing axle of superdump is just for the law.

Load concentration over a given distance is a consideration for crossing bridges and driving down the road legally. Also, if the tongue was really short it would jackknife really quickly while backing up. A long tongue allows the driver to more easily maneuver the pup trailer and allows lots of room to clear the primary truck box load while dumping.

tractordemo That is very interesting! I (also a noob) noticed that the first axle of the pup trailer is a bit further forward from the second axle than the distance between the other axles - is there a reason? Initially I thought that the trailer's first axle is steered via the drawbar (and hence needs a bit of elbow space), but that seems to not be the case?

  • @STiBebi

YensR I think the trailer's first axle can be locked, if the driver backing up. The truck has then only one breaking point. As you can see at 0:55, the front axle of the trailer is steered via drawbar :D

I live in the Netherlands where we do 50 ton on 5 Axels. (Like to say that)Isn't it easier to drive on a soft medium with this kind of combinations than a tractor trailer combi? But i thought that this combinations are excisting to spare the bridges.
