Peter Windsor: I Don't Understand How Hamilton Does It!

Спорт

In this interview with @peterwindsor we discuss Lewis Hamilton's record breaking win at the British GP why the race was so emotional for Hamilton and fans of F1 globally, we discuss how Lewis Hamilton managed to hold off Max Verstappen in the latter stages of the Grand Prix on rapidly degrading soft tyres, and how has Hamilton managed to stay so great for so long. What is happening to Ferrari and why does Charles Leclerc keep making mistakes? Should Lando Norris and McLaren have put on medium compound tyres and did this mistake cost them the victory at the British Grand Prix, and why did they cost Oscar Piastri so much time? And what should Red Bull do about Sergio Checo Perez' performance who is no being outperformed by Hulkenberg in the Haas, and why did they extend his contract for a further two years? We discuss whether Daniel Ricciardo or Liam Lawson is most likely to replace Perez.

Hate me all you want, but I still think HAM is the only driver who can challenge Max all year round in an equal car. And I am talking about race craft, mind games, and everything else you need to do to win a championship. All others still need time to get there.

After Abu Dhabi, Lewis eventually decided to carry on racing with the words "..... while moments like this might define careers, I refuse to let this define mine." The following two years tested him time and time again - and all of us lived that with him. Thank goodness he can now put that to rest - for me, yesterday was his career defining moment for reasons that go way beyond that of the sport. It's to do with him as a man. I'm so happy for him - such a dignified man.

What I loved about yesterday's Grand Prix was seeing Lewis Hamilton with his mother and father. The emotional moment when he broke down upon greeting his parents speaks volumes. It shows that before this race, Lewis was feeling very down, especially as he no longer has someone to turn to when his motivation and self-belief are low. This moment also highlights how much his family’s support means to him; their love can conquer anything. It's important to remember that Lewis might be feeling somewhat excluded now that he's leaving Mercedes, and the outpouring of emotion shows exactly what the 2021 season has done to him. Considering all this, it's understandable why he hasn't been at his best lately. But like the true champion he is, the cream always rises to the top.❤😊

@BRMCaptChaos I’ve also been watching and following f1 avidly for 40 years, I eat, sleep, breathe and live f1. I’ve only missed a handful of races since ‘88 and I’ve attended 49 race weekends in 24 countries, I did Melbourne again this year and I live 15 mins from Albert Park where I have missed 1 race since 2003, I’m off in December to Qatar and 2 days later I’ll be in Abu Dhabi attending the final race for Lewis in his Mercedes, witnessing the end of an ‘Era’. I’ll obviously be in Melbourne for the first race of Lewis in the Scuderia, my son already has his LH44 Ferrari merch and I’m going to Jeddah, I want to see this spectacular compound in the middle of the desert, the Middle Eastern race events are second to only Sepang where I’ll 100% be in ‘26 when it’s back on the calendar thanks to Mercedes Benz and Petronas. It’s impossible to love f1 more it’s my priority after my kids and over my work which used to be BMW now Mercedes Benz Australia, where the perks are very nice at Albert Park and took me to Hockenhiem in 2019 the final race at the old historic Circuit. I’m immersed in f1. My son loves it as much as I do at 16, his favourite place is Suzuka and I won’t be able to top that for him, Japanese mad, loves the place, people, culture and technology. This December is his present for doing so well at school. We both balled our eyes out when we realised that Lewis had Max covered with 3-4 laps to go. What a moment. History was created, records written Omg I wish, being English that I was there at Silverstone, that atmosphere would’ve been the best experience ever, even in the rain and mud, no matter the price of the tickets, I would have paid 10 times more, if I’d known but my son called the win for Lewis before the race, little genius, the result put my son ahead of me and my friends in my f1 fantasy league. He won Bahrain and lead till Suzuka where I took the lead till now, we’re 300 points ahead of 3rd place and I knew he had me when George had the DNF. He spanks me on the Sim on f1 too. I taught him everything I know, racing lines, apex, brake in a straight line, smooth inputs on steering and pedals, at 13 he was quicker and I’ve spanked BMW M3’s & M5’s around Phillip Island among other places, I drove the first Mini in Australia 1 of the cars that was prepared for Albert Park for the celebrity race. Mercedes track days too. But Lewis what a man what a role model for young kids of today, Senna was my hero, I love Lewis above anyone else but he’s my Sons hero and he couldn’t have a better one as far as I’m concerned. The man, the legend, the greatest, the quickest, most decorated Sir Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton. Considering this is so long, words actually fail me. Now Mercedes have given him a decent car that he likes, can drive and provides a certain level of confidence he’s going to be in the Mix for race wins for the rest of the season and is really the only man to really give it to Max with all things being equal. He’s gonna win in Budapest for the 9th time too. Bloody hell the UNDISPUTED GOAT of f1, but Senna is still “God’ of f1, but Lewis is ‘God’ for my son but that’s ok, cause he’s never seen Senna at Monaco or Suzuka but he sees Lewis writing history. And I even have blurry eyesight right now because his accomplishments will never be equaled so I hope Adrian goes to Ferrari to build him a Championship winning car for his 8th WDC again 👀💯👍🏼🤫

you can’t fake that emotion. lewis was not meant to reach f1. he was reminded of it ever since he was a child, that he didn’t fit in and didn’t belong. even as an adult, people try to down play his achievements, artificially prop up others and, as we saw in 2021, even go as far as to steal titles from him in front of millions. despite all of this, he’s done his talking on the track, continued to believe in himself and risen to become a true, authentic champion and a legend of the sport. congratulations, sir lewis! he is an inspiration and a class act through and through.

This, and I can't state this enough. Peter Windsor is always on point. I do to an extent understand the criticism levied at Lewis, especially this season. However, the mental baggage that Abu Dabi '21 would of caused, I can't even begin to fathom. How he has powered through is beyond me, how it didn't break him again is beyond me. As much as Sunday at Silverstone was quite the fairy tale experience for Lewis and Mercedes. I applaud Lewis post race for openly taking about the issues he has faced since '21.

Drivers like Lewis do not have some "mental bagage" after things like that. They take it and use it to get stronger. I am not a Lewis fan (Max all day long) but he is not the kind of driver that sits on something like that for years. It hurt him yes but that is it. Him doubting him self is the winless streak for almost 3 years. If anything it made him even stronger. If things like this keep you down you will never achieve anything.

Lewis Hamilton's victory on Sunday gave me goosebumps and after his reactions with the team and his family I had tears in my eyes and I am almost f***** 49 years old. This guy deserves the title Sir. In all his career he was a gentleman and even when the competition was fierce, he never went full asshole mode like Verstappen, Schumacher, Alonso and Senna and that is why he is the GOAT. This is a true comeback of a great sportsman. Also nice to see George Russell coming to his car. Even Helmut Marko showed him respect, I mean what else can you say! I wish him more wins for Mercedes in this season, because I think he is very thankful for what the Mercedes team, Toto and Niki (RIP) gave him. The last two season were hard for the team and LH and the 2021 final was and is a scandal. Loosing the title by human error aka Michael Masi and then sitting in a not competitive car for so long was hard to watch and on Sunday we could see and feel the relief. If Lewis wins the title they stole from him with Ferrari then Christian Horner should get a LH44 tattoo, that would be fun. I would love to see that! Horner could send pics of it (the tattoo)! His whole life is a movie. There is a 'The Pursuit of Happiness' part for Anthony Hamilton. As for Lewis: Rising prodigy kid beats adults in RC cars, deals with discrimination, his legendary hero, who he hoped to meet at the next racing awards, dies in a race, he meets legendary Ron Dennis instead, a montage of wins, some against an increasingly troubled Rosberg, multiple trophies, dejected when a younger Rosberg he is seen as superior to gets into F1 before him, he is now 21 and wondering if he will ever get to F1, then bad boy Montoya's surprising and questionable exit opens up a seat at McLaren, he shocks McLaren during Silverstone test in 2006 but many are quick to write his performance against Kimi off, a troubled McLaren's credibility is questioned when they announce a rookie's signing next to a 2xWDC, he crashes out in his first winter test, his pace in the first race rattles his 2xWDC teammate, leads the WDC by race 5, wins first F1 race and shares podium with Rosberg, spygate, almost wins in the rookie season, comes back in 2008 with a less superior McLaren, is that Glock, comes back to reality with 2009 dog McLaren, troubles worsen with liegate, then teamed up with JB who he underestimates, superstar girl friend distractions, bad press, turmoil, resets his thinking, starts to respect JB and learns tyre management from him, finds strong form in 2012, but misses out on WDC due to major reliabilities from the lead, then shocking move to an even poorer Merc, a montage of more wins and records broken, AD21, 3 year drought, shock move to Ferrari, poetic, farewell win for Merc at home... Unfortunately for Hollywood, we are still watching that movie. Maybe in 2040 they can do the movie

There were several laps to go and the mediums seemed an obvious choice for Lando, it seemed likely the softs would have failed as the race came to a close which of course they did. When the right tyre is 7 to 10 seconds per lap faster, no amount of skill can compensate for that and it's too big a gamble.

I hear what you're saying about the momentum at Red Bull and that being able to keep them competitive through the end of 25, but I disagree. There are two things happening this year that have changed the playing field. The most obvious is that other teams have improved their cars. The less obvious is that the Red Bull is not performing as well as it once did, and that downward trend began almost immediately after Red Bull announced that Newey would no longer be involved in the mechanical and engineering of the car, only race strategy decisions on the weekends. Horner can talk all he wants about how talented his total team is, and that's likely true. But I think they've relied completely on the once in a lifetime genius that is Adrian Newey, and I think it will be very difficult for them to recover from his loss.

Peters takes were off on this one. To argue that both Mclarens mistakes were the right decisions and he would have done the same is odd. Mclaren saw how the soft runners did at the beginning of the grand prix secondly they had a brand new medium which even the commentators were certain he was going to take so im at a loss as to how taking soft was a good idea. Not double stacking was a terrible idea in changing conditions because you lose so much over one lap. Max chose the exact right time to pit and just on that one lap was right back in it.

As the OP suggested “do yourself a favour and gain some knowledge” He never said Clark was the best or England produces the best racers but here are a few facts for you to digest; 1: Jim Clark was Scottish not English (you really didn’t even know that?) 2: UK born drivers have won more F1 races than any other nation 3: The UK have produced more drivers who have won an F1 race than any other nation 4: Six out of the 10 current F1 teams are based in the UK where their cars are designed and built largely by British men and women None of these facts mean anything other than to question what has YOUR country contributed to F1 as a sport whether it be from a driver or team perspective?

I generally like Peter Windsor’s race analysis feedback and he was being kind and generous to all drivers as a class act as a lot of the stuff to talk about is hindsight theories and what ifs. I think Max had the option to choose between Hard and Soft and he chose hard and still performed incredible on the less stickier compound, while Lando followed Lewis on the Softs, when he would have been better on a medium option (Oscar’s recommendation) to have longevity over all out speed. One thing that Lando does to get everything out of his McLaren at Silverstone and Austria is he uses the wideness of the track’s breath to achieve his quick lap times, but comes off in advanced tire wear as he likes to throw in more speed, while Lewis has decent speed, but steering control and racing line is much narrower of his designated style of driving and usually has better consistency in lap times and less tire wear. Lewis is just the mature and experienced driver and Lando is still finding his wings. I think Lando has a lot to learn and grow as a driver and mean this in the most sincere and genuine way to wish him to figure it out.

McLaren team were reactive in their bad decisions rather than being upfront and assertive. Giving an irrational Lando tyre options instead of taking the right call didn't help them either. Oscar was robbed of a potential podium. Although they have the best car and great drivers, McLaren as a team is pretty average and mediocre. But all in all a fantastic race and immensely happy for Sir Lewis Hamilton finally winning a home race after 2.5 years. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

I dont think this is mercedes or lewis last win this year. Im pretty sure both hamilton and russel will win more races this year. Already at hungary. Russel seem to have a slight better qualy pace, but hamilton is above russel in race pace. That comes down to experience I think.

How did he do it? Same way George did it a week before. Drive a very solid race and wait for Norris and McLaren to screw it up. Without failed timing of pit stops and a bad choice of tire, Lewis would not have won. I’m glad Lewis did win, no doubt about it. What a great finish and a fairy tale race, but facts are facts.
