a polymath is an expensive job that doesn't produce value instantly. look at the polymaths of the 17-18th centuries, they were all rich europeans, who, instead of spending their days on flamboyant cuisine, spend their days studying anything that interested them. they dont need to worry about getting a job, or having to deal with taxes (being born in a large influential family means you have plenty of business-oriented relatives )

@@medaphysicsrepository2639 You don't have to know that much about every topic, just enough about many topics to connect the dots. It doesn't even have to be all accurate info, just accurate enough you have a good visual in your mind of how it fundamentally works/operates...THAT is how the dot connecting results in mind-blowing discoveries. The discovery is usually not the focus at all when it happens. It's just a byproduct of transendence + polymath.

that is part of the problem, but your job wants you to progress and someone who is a jack of all trades can actually be a huge benefit to the company. Their main worry is your long-term employment and influence on other employees. If they have to train you how to do your job and you quit in half a year, it's a huge waste of their time and money. On top of that, if you get in good with other employees, it increases the chance they will listen to your ideas and quit as well

"""A polymath ... is an individual whose knowledge spans a significant number of subjects, known to draw on complex bodies of knowledge to solve specific problems.""' Instead, he's talking about ego and politics.

True, and to be fair they discussed this on the podcast as well in addition to how it makes things easier for one to be dishonest academically. while we cannot become experts in everything I think it would be beneficial to at least have a conceptual foundation and learn how to think like a mathematician, physicist, chemist and etc.

I'm in full agreement that some cross-disciplinary training would be beneficial in all fields. Not quite polymathy, but better than having too narrow a focus. That perception is kinda wrong. I love the fields of design & development. Started with 7 with my first anatomy book in art. Learned with 10 my first Instrument. With 16 I touched the fields of industrialDesign and Communication Design and from there dived into User Experience and User Interface Design. Based on my prior knowledge I saw design as problem Solving and the technology used for user interfaces is code. With 20 I started to learn Front End and went into Backend. Now I’m 25 With knowledge about art music theory design and developent. I used the principles like Compostion, Meassuring and Color to translate from art into design. It’s more likely that you’re able to connect the dots and learn more efficiently and effectively if the fields are overlapping. I translated from guitar to piano because I learned music theory. With the help of system design I was able to map out technical requirements for apps I wanted to build and that helped me learning to code more efficiently. Now I’m able to build anything I could Imagine in terms of apps websites etc. I also went through a animation and 3D Phase where I learned advanced usage of Rendering, Modeling, Texturing and Animation with 3D Software. But the biggest disadvantage is that someone like me is not fitting in this society. It’s hard to depress the desire of creating and force yourself into a normal life where you can’t share your opinions. And if you have a moment where you don’t suppress yourself you seem like a SmartAss who knows everything better. There are always 2 Sides of a coin.

The one thing that motivated me to become a polymath is poverty. I was too poor to pay for all the things that life requires so I started learning how to provide them for myself. Soon I noticed that those around me were not interested in basic reality so, I started studying all the things most people choose to ignore. This pursuit has enlightened me to a very very simple fact of Life .. Idiots run the world and more idiots help them. This is why there are fewer and fewer Citizens willing to pursue much of anything outside their own preconceived reality.

The world needs more polymaths. A true Polymath has capabilities of learning and doing anything in the world. And I mean anything. A true Polymath is also someone Who is driven by hey certain understanding that is very elusive too many unless you are one yourself, do not ever criticize a polymath until you can learn about their true motive and knowledge in a particular area. That may not be your thinking, but if so then I'd say you're not one :) Polymaths have always been one, it's only through time (or someone else realizing it after you're gone) that one starts to see this manifest itself.
