Peter Sellers Interview 1978 Brian Linehan's City Lights

Ойын-сауық

In this interview from 1978, actor Peter Sellers talks about various jobs he held in the theater while young, touring with Ralph Reed after his time in the RAF, performing with Harry Seacombe, turning down the role of Faigin in the 1948 film Oliver Twist so that Alec Guiness could do it on screen as he did on stage and his friendship with Cary Grant. Among Peter Sellers best-known performances are those as Inspector Jacques Clouseau in the Pink Panther films: The Pink Panther, Return of the Pink Panther and Pink Panther Strikes Again.
From 1974 to 2000, Canada’s Brian Linehan conducted thousands of in-depth interviews with the greatest actors and directors from over 60 years of film history. His programs City Lights and Linehan have not been seen since they first aired and are now available for the first time for licensing. Linehan, a stylishly gifted broadcaster, meticulously did all his own research and that, coupled with his knowledge and passion about film and filmmaking, puts him in a class all by himself.
With 20,000 hours of music footage spanning 90 years and thousands of hours of in-depth interviews with the 20th century’s icons of Film and Television, Politics, Comedy, Literature, Art, Science, Fashion and Sports, Reelin’ In The Years Productions is now the World’s Premier Source For Footage Of Musical Artists, Entertainers & History Makers.

Brian Linehan, who passed away in 2004, left his entire estate to The Brian Linehan Charitable Foundation to provide training, work opportunities and promotion for young actors of exceptional talent. All of the income of his Foundation is donated to not-for-profit institutions for that purpose. In the decade since his death, recipients of the Foundation’s support have included extraordinary young actors affiliated with the Canadian Film Centre, The National Screen Institute of Canada, the Stratford Shakespearean Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival, which, since Brian's passing, has preserved and housed Brian's personal archive and tape library.

I love Peter Sellers, the actor, the comic, the man. He was perhaps a challenging partner, but also a loyal friend. He had physical timing,. mental clarity, emotional availability and was a dedicated spiritual seeker. All in all a well rounded man. His comedy remains fresh and for all of us to enjoy. I thank him for sharing his gift.

What a beautiful tribute. Peter was a true one-off on all fronts...by all accounts a complete nightmare to live with, but an immensely gifted actor with an absolutely wicked sense of humour. I think it's very sad that nearly all of the biographies about him tend to dwell on his dark side. It was there for sure, and he was capable of being an absolute monster at times, but if you read the books by his son and people like Graham Stark, you discover that he had a lighter side; the side that manifests itself in the films.

I really miss this fine actor. His accent as Inspector clouseau was sooo convincing that you would think that's the way he really talk. As the note said to the start of the credits of the movie trail of the pink panther" To Peter the one and only clouseau ".

He'd probably been sitting there all day, doing interviews. That's how they do these promo things: you sit there, and there's a parade of people from different newspapers, magazines, TV outlets, etc from all over the world. I can't imagine it being something that's very enjoyable to do. So yeah, I imagine he'd probably had a few by the time Brian walked in (he says "I've been here since this morning", so one imagines he had probably been at for a few hours by the time this one was shot).

Peter was never comfortable doing interviews- I think Micheal Parkinson probably got further with him than most, but even then it looked as though much had been arranged beforehand. There was certainly a degree of subterfuge just to get him on stage in the first place.

David Wise You hit the nail on the head. Especially after filming Begin There, he looked quite healthy... then that heart disease Dorian Greyed him. He was yet young. His daughter playfully told him he looked like a "fat old man" as Chauncy, and he, being the unstable genius he was responded very harshly to her even though she was joking. He often involved his children, even when they were little, in his disagreements with spouses. Asking them for "advice", sarcastically, as to whether to remain married or not. He was still a legendary mad man, though. To me he was.

@@chaznewby1 he was also something of a victim of 1960s quack medicine. His 13 heart attacks at once were (when you get past the sensationalism and rumors) ultimately the result of a really bad overdose of something his doctor gave him (which was highly addictive). Immediately after, he went to the doctor complaining that this near death experience ruined his memory, could they maybe test for brain damage. Doc said "no, youre just fat. Lose weight. Heres some medical grade cocaine" because it was the 60s (i mean vanity fair published 'diets' like 'become a daytime alcoholic' this wasnt too weird back then). The fact that he rapidly lost weight several times in his life only weakened his heart, and because he wasnt listened to, he developed sort of a fear of doctors along with some hypochondria. Moreover his doctor just left him worse off and with a coke addiction. Just really sad. It was all very preventable and not even a dr feelgood situation, he just wanted help.

He turned down the role of Fagan in “Oliver” because he thought Alec Guiness was the best actor for the role. That says something about his integrity but also about his honesty in recognizing that someone else was better suited for the role.

I thought the first half of the movie was hilarious, with everyone thinking Clouseau is dead, Chief Inspector Dreyfuss being released from the psych ward and given his old job back, Kato turning Clouseau's flat into a "Chinese nookie factory", etc, that stuff was awesome. The last act drags, though, when he disguises himself as the New York mobster, and Burt Kwouk is wandering around in those coke bottle glasses (a homage to Mr. Moto, perhaps?), that kinda ran out of steam fast.

Revenge of the Pink Panther is a classic. It is the second best Pink Panther movie in the series, only Pink Panther Strikes Again is better. Revenge is hilarious! Herbert Lom is hilarious! The wandering transvestite that escaped from prison was ingenious & way before it's time! The Chinese nookie factory was funny. "Mr & Mrs. Lo key" lol. Having Dyan Cannon as Simone was a great choice! "Move em out" still is a song quoted by me & my Gen x friends that saw this movie on cable growing up in the 80's. "If you mess around with women, your wallet takes a trimming." Lol. Peter Sellers passed away but growing up in the 80's through cable & video I enjoyed his performances . My dad & grandparents introduced me to Peter Sellers & because of video & cable TV younger generations know him & appreciate him. As an adult I love "Being There". Great film. But don't underestimate "Revenge" because it's funny! Dreyfus falling into the grave or laughing through Clouseau's eulogy was hilarious!
