Peter Lynch: How to Invest During High Inflation

Peter Lynch (author of One Up On Wall Street) gave an iconic speech back in 1994 where he not only discussed his investing strategy, but also discussed how to invest in the stock market during high inflation and rising interest rates. In 2022, as we face these challenges, let's look back on Peter Lynch's timeless advice to learn how we should be navigating the markets.

Another piece of Lynch wisdom is to never get out of the market. I (nervously) stayed in the market in the 2020 crash and more than doubled my money by the end of the year (thanks Peter). I admit I was somewhat lucky, but was in the right stocks for the time. Since then and after a lot of learnings, I have pivoted to true value plays on great companies with Monish continually whispering in my ear "heads I win, tails I don't lose very much". I sleep much better without the nosebleed valuations and am always eagerly hunting for 50 cent dollars and thinking a new crash will be like Boxing Day.

Yes stocks are pretty unstable at the moment, but if you do the right math, you should be just fine. Bloomberg and other finance media have been recording cases of folks gaining over 250k just in a matter of weeks/couple months, so I think there are alot of wealth transfer in this downtime if you know where to look.

Well with the economy and stocks at where it is now, I'd be disappointed if people weren't making any error on their portfolio at this time, it was much easier to navigate during the bullrun, regardless I still see and read articles of people pulling over $225k by the weeks in trades, how come?

thanks peter for this insight from a personal perspective To my understanding this just proves how much we need an edge as investors because playing the market like everyone else just isn’t good enough, we just need to hold onto our hopes and wait to see how things turn out because market movements are almost always unpredictable. In my portfolio, I'm noticing more red than green.

Purchasing a stock may seem straightforward, but selecting the correct stock without a proven strategy can be exceedingly challenging. I've been working on expanding my $210K portfolio for a while, and my primary obstacle is the lack of clear entry and exit strategies. Any advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Market crashes are golden opportunities for investing. Focus on improving yourself and your income. Focus on living at or below your means. If not for yourself, but for your family and the service you can be unto others by accumulating wealth and wisdom. From September last year to January this year, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq nearly tripled in value and Apple did 10x, Thankfully planning with my advisor, Jane Marie Kunak, I was able to enter the market at the best possible time. The market will have its ups and downs, but it has always gone up in the long run. Good luck.

I'm in Canada and I started investing in the stock market in 2010 when I was twenty three years of age. I started small and I put a little money each year into investments. I have mostly bought index funds. I'd say on average I contribute $10,000 a year now. My portfolio is now worth over $300,000. I also bought a house six years ago. I don't really know much about investing, but I seem to have done better by doing so. I usually just buy twice a year. I don't really put much effort into it. My advice to people would be to unplug your television and stop reading the news. Also live your life and be happy. You only get one.

How you considered introducing basic technical analysis into your strategy? Not ‘day-trading’, but ‘position-trading’ (trend following). There’s a working assumption one cannot ‘time the market’, however, saving oneself from the big drops can definitely improve long-term performance. 200 day MA on major indexes is quite a reliable crash indicator. Stan Weinstein is the authority on trend following. Would be great to see you consider it.

Don't invest in individual stocks or very limited index if you don't invest time and money in obtaining relevant knowledge and being an active investor. If you don't want the hastle, just invest in 3-4 etfs and keep adding money as you go. 30% drop in a market is big, but as 2002, 2006, or 1929 proved not the largest (try 98% down tech bubble). Being 100% in stocks when you are young is not a brainer. Your youth is your biggest asset. Just keep buying more of the same etfs instead of "investing" in next iPhone or iPad. You WILL BE a millionaire at 60 and will live very stress free life.😁

Anyone can successfully earn consistent passive income from stocks investments, all you need is a positive mindset , the right information , and a very good investment management plan From my experience , It's only when I hired an investment manager to manage my investments , that's when I started to have consistent income from my stocks investments .

Of course , having a proper investment management is important . That is why many stocks videos emphasize on the importance of getting a financial management that was the main reason why i allowed Maureen Leo manage my account.

BTW let me start by saying I really like your show and even this post. I understand your point from Peter Lynch and how short term fluctuations are impossible to predict and you shouldn't get sucked into forecasting territory.. However you are only looking at a single perspective. Some investors depend on the market for income and secondly the concept of sell before it falls and buy at the bottom are strong. For these two reasons short term performance matters and forecasting is pursued. Now, I do agree we are spectacually poor at it but should that mean we stop trying? Also 'the market' is made up of winners and losers not one gloopy mass of outcomes, so some people will forecast correctly. Anyway - keep the great channel up - I really enjoy it.

For sure, these are great points made. Peter Lynch has a great way to explaining things. Inflation is really starting to eat our lunches here in the United States. Most people don't have a clue how much their hard earned savings are being depleted. There are other things you can do to help protect your money and even earn more. I actually made a video on this very thing that might be helpful to you.

I was thinking about this as well since i just opened my investing account so to start investing whatever i don't need instead of having it sit in a bank getting eaten by inflation, but i was unsure if it was a good idea still to invest in ETFs for the long term with this high inflation, this video helped me quite a bit and you've earned yourself my sub for sure, the best ones are the ones that keep it real

Think about this way also: how many times in the last few years have you heard the stock is doing great while the economy is not, the market got disconected from the real economy. It was propped up by cheap money. It caused inflation. Fed is taking the cheap money away. They will start to sell 60 bn of securities in a month and speed it to 90 bn a month. The rising food and energy prices will squaze consumers. The market is still at record valuation levels. While I can’t predict I can certainly say it looks like really bad environment for most sectors. Peter Lynch might no try to predict the market, but maybe he would not find much to invest in at these prices and would sit in cash until price got better. If you do not want to market time, you can still invest in the market slowly over year or two. Select companies that produce free cash flow, have reasonable valuation and perform in inflationary environmnet - like energy stocks, basic materials, healtcare, food, some gold.
