Peter Lorre in Crack-Up (1936)

Фильм және анимация

Crack-Up is a 1936 film starring Peter Lorre as Colonel Gimpy aka Baron Rudolf Maximilian Taggart.
Colonel Gimpy is viewed as a dimwitted, trumpet playing mascot for an airport, but in reality he is the ruthless head of a spy organization that is trying to secure the blueprints for an airplane.

One of these excellent movies that are just perfect for watching in the evening. It is really sad that he had to undergo a severe operation in the 1920s and ended up with a morphine addiction that spiraled his life into a downward slope.

Peter Lorre is so timeless, especially in these old B movies. All the other characters seem very much of the 30's and 40's, but Lorre looks like he could be in a movie today, and it would make sense.

Lorre does have a talent for elevating whatever he's in just be being there, doesn't he? Such an oddly endearing character he's playing. Doesn't seem evil, exactly. Just determined and really tired. Honestly I think he's better in these types of roles that when he's playing a straight evil character. Not that he's not good at them, just a bit of a wast of his talents, because he's both terrifyingly creepy and adorably funny. Little bit of a shame he got typecast as the former so much.

+Antidote NYHC I understand your frustration over the "let's just give up and quietly die" ending. Although, in terms of strict melodrama logic: Lorre's character is shot and slowly dying anyway, the pilot is scalded / blinded from the hot engine oil sprayed in his face, and the old guy is heartbroken over his young wife's betrayal & departure. It's as if these guys had to drop all of their personal agendas in order to -- for a brief span of time -- feel a sense of shared humanity and simply embrace a common fate. Then again, maybe that's just a hot / steaming load of B.S., huh? ;-) Yes, maybe it is.

But if it crashes in the water, no problem it'll float ... until just before a life boat, from a passing steamer, shows up to make the rescue. Thank you for posting moonshiny74. Alfred Hitchcock once described that "thing" that everyone is after (in this case - the propeller plans) is what he called a "MacGuffin." But as a draftsman I know any serious design will lend itself to simply being folded and placed in an envelope. Any and every design of this MacGuffin's plan would take up MANY pages of very large design drawings. And since they didn't have the advantage of computer drives or flash drives (like Mr. Snowden) - I wonder if the MacGuffin is actually in that envelope.

Hmmm, great movie except for the last 20 minutes or so when it all turned rather silly. First the crash into the sea - a power-dive from 15K feet (or whatever) and nobody wearing any restraint - and big loose metal boxes in the cabin....they bounce a bit on the water but everyone is ok (except Ace who got blinded by the gauge blowing out). Then the plane sits floating on the water for about an hour or three, not even resting engines-down (which it would do in reality). Sorry, I'm being a nit-picker...I did enjoy it, Colonel Gimpy was the best.Colonel.ever! Thanks for the upload, always like Brian Donlevy too 💖 🇨🇦

Strange movie but fairly good. The old guy that was going after his girlfriend I don't understand why he didn't just tread water or hang on to the other guy with the vest. That didn't make any sense at all because he was wealthy and had already reconciled that he wasn't going to get the girls anyway and was okay with it. Pretty stupid ending.

Hitler had been in power for 3 years and Germany was massively ramping up its weapon production. In two years it would invade Czechoslovakia.... Germany probably did have a huge network of spies in the aircraft industry. Not that Germany had much to learn from the US:- Germany was _far_ more advanced in 1936. England was another matter - their aircraft were better than the a Germans at that time (Hawker and Supermarine were the best in the word up to 1940, after which things evened out somewhat).

Isn't if funny / strange that neither pilot has mentioned their Compass, their Heading, Dead Reckoning, or shown any signs of a sextant ?? Perhaps it was intentional to throw off Mr. Moto / Col. Taggart / Peter Lorre. Or was it just a complete ignorance by the writers of this movie ?? We shall see....

Silly ending. Why couldn't Ace and Fleming swim for it? The third guy was pulled into the lifeboat just as the plane was sinking. Nonsensical. Otherwise quite enjoyable.
