Peter Hitchens: Mandatory mask wearing is more superstition than science

Columnist Peter Hitchens has argued against compulsory face masks, calling for “relaxed” train carriages and shops for those who do not wish to wear one.
Speaking with talkRADIO’s Mike Graham, he said mandatory mask wearing was “more superstition than science”.
Boris Johnson has urged the public to wear face coverings in shops, with an announcement on whether they will be compulsory in England due in the coming days.

The people I've talked to working in my local shops have told me that they are voluntarily choosing to wear these Masks. It's the Control Freaks who are trying to force shoppers to wear them when entering shopping centres and using public transport who are disrespecting their customers. I am boycotting any shop who insists I wear a Mask. After all, when I worked full-time for 26 years and paid thousands of pounds and housing rent and Poll and Council Taxes, I never demanded that my customers should wear a Mask and wash their hands with hand gel before approaching me for help. Only the Control Freaks amongst us are insisting that shoppers should wear these Masks for a Virus known as GREED. :-(

@@insanityrulestheday Agree completely, shopped throughout lockdown at my local Lidl, when quiet, usually evening's, no problems with distancing at all. Now at this late stage, when supposed to be normalizing, being forced to wear a face muzzle seems ridiculous, especially when directly across the road there's a Wetherspoons, with far many more people in than Lidl, with no muzzles. They are in for hours, whilst I'm about 20 minutes. Intend to do my one main shop under sufferance and then do without everything else that I would have normally gone into shops for.

If they are wearing masks, then the cloth of the mask will contain the larger droplets exhaled by the mask-wearing infected person and also reduce the range (distance) of the aerosols they expel when they exhale. ...The non-infected person who wears a mask will have a marginal amount of protection in terms of not breathing in at least the larger droplets. Keep in mind that VIRAL LOAD (quantity of viral particles) is a big factor regarding whether one gets infected and even how ill they become if they do get infected. It does NOT decrease the safety of people who wear them. Otherwise far more Japanese, Koreans, etc. would be ill or injured from wearing them. These countries in the Far East (South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, etc.) have had FAR LOWER rates of infection and death from Covid-19. South Korea has been praised for its sophisticated "track-and-trace and testing" regimen. However, Japan has been criticized for its ineptness in trace and testing regimen. Yet, Japan has almost as low an infection and death rate as South Korea. ....The one thing all of these countries have in common: the habit of mask wearing -- the MASS mask-wearing of their respective populations. I think we should learn from other countries. These East Asian countries have had far fewer infections ad deaths than Europe and America. ....Why?!? I am convinced it is the mass mask-wearing of their people.

Doctors and nurses wouldn’t willingly wear masks if they didn’t work. Better to wear a mask and be able to go out into the sunlight rather than be forced to stay indoors.

Doctors and nurses can get sued if their patients catch infections... Hence the pretence for face masks in medical settings. The mask boxes state they offer no protection against viral infection btw.

There are no urgent medical reasons for imposing masks at this point. So many people are exempt it negates any benefits.

I suspect the Govt has just killed the high street retail recovery, Judging by the response of use to public transport due to muzzling, I would guess people will choose to shop from home.

Here in New York, we're in "Phase Four" of the pandemic, where grocery stores/supermarkets have always been open, and restaurants are allowed sidewalk cafe seating (but no 'inside dining'). I saw a lot of cafe sidewalk dining in the West Village on Friday night (the Wall Street crowd escaping from their townhouses in the neighborhood to enjoy a meal in the humid weather --- 85F at 65% H). In Central Park, the Boathouse Restaurant and its attached fast food cafe are still shut down, as is the Le Pain Quotidien in the Kerbs Boathouse at the duck pond. (The Alice in Wonderland statue is just off the pond to the north, where Jimi Hendrix posed with his backing group in 1967; Jimi is gone, unfortunately, but the statue is still there). As it is, I can't get some iced coffee in Central Park! Meanwhile, you should know that Peter Hitchens is very highly regarded here in New York, and he's right: I don't know about England, but an economic tsunami would certainly wipe out the (meager) savings of the poor and middle class here.

here in Scotland most of us opt out of the tv licence. remember the old tv licence ads. they used fear and lies saying a they had a tv van that knew you were watching without a licence. all lies and the ads were terrifying.
